Supergirl Supergirl Costume Discussion Thread

If you really want to call things by their name, then don't hide behind the "break up the suit" BS, just say you would rather see a sexy Supergirl showing more skin. This reminds me of the new badass Captain Marvel suit, some fanboys hate it because they would rather see Carol Danvers wearing her sexy Miss Marvel bathing suit. :whatever:

Well the reason I prefer the classic Ms Marvel suit is that it is the one I grew up with and the one I think is iconic. If the midriff Supergirl suit or the crotch guard New 52 were suddenly promoted as the new badass Supergirl costume, I still would prefer the classic Helen Slater/ Matrix Supergirl-inspired costume, because that's also the one I think is iconic and which I grew up with.

It's the same reason I prefer Dick Grayson Robin with tights and Batman in blue and grey.

This idea that the costume was designed to somehow "appeal to CBS' conservative audience" is a bunch of hot air as far as I'm concerned and doesn't amount to anything more than people wanting to find reasons to complain about the design.

Ditto.

I never particularly cared for the bare-midriff costume. It just seemed a reflection of the times. (IIRC, Shinia Twain-SP?- did a few videos with that look, and soon it seemed all women were wearing them) It never had the timeless look that the Slater costume had.

I only hope they get people used to the idea of bare legs and maybe we can lighten those 1950's dark secretarial stockings eventually.

Especially from those who're brainwashed by the New 52

I hope Cavill's Superman costume gets toned down on the texture front after this Supergirl costume. Benoist's one has a nice simplicity about it and still looks classic. Cavill's one looks like it's trying a bit too hard to distance itself from the classic and looks more like one of Superman's alternate costumes.

Male characters as well. With their steroided up exaggerated muscular look and all. Let's call a spade a spade and not be one sided.

Yes exactly, and it is always one sided and over the top with some. I wouldn't waste your time trying to argue mate.

I'm going over to the Henry Cavill thread to hint at his large bulge and his amazing body and what I'd like to do to him :o:woot:

Women are nearly as bad as men is the truth, they just don't have as much testosterone as we do. God help us if they did, it would be funny to see women given the testosterone levels of men for a month just to see them acting like dogs on heat like us guys do sometimes. They wouldn't know what had hit them. And I'm sure they would be a lot more understanding and also forgiving of us guys after they would experience what we do on a daily basis. Men have far more restraint and self control than women realize.

If female artists had male sex drive levels they would draw and portray their male characters in a more overtly sexual way as some male artists do. Simple.

So in conclusion the only way to stop the poor women from being mistreated is to give men female hormones to lower our levels of testo, or castration for the whole male population. I'm thinking that some would want the latter option regardless...:woot:

lol, what timing, my girlfriend has just asked me if she looks too slu.tty to go to a party we're going to how she is dressed, hahaha. She doesn't, she looks great! :ilv:

Enjoy your weekend guys!

Not entirely. Men are portrayed as a male power fantasy, whereas women are drawn as a male sex fantasy. Men want to be strong and big muscled, which is why they draw the male characters that way.

In both cases they are both being portrayed as the idealized physical specimen. It's not really much different. Just that "men" draw the characters,so it's perceived as some "male fantasy".

Exactly. We got that with Christopher Reeve, Helen Slater, Henry Cavill, and Laura Vandervoort. I don't feel we're getting that with Benoist.

Remember how I said comics are art and art is about striking imagery?

And again, how does striking imagery mean showing midriff? Comparing it to Michelangelo's David is absurdly nonsensical because showing Supergirl's midriff isn't some kind of artistic statement.

That'll be the day when a director who isn't Snyder employs Atwood to design the suit. I'm proud of Wilkinson for the Batsuit (TBD about the WW look until a show in better lighting) but the Super suit leaves me as cold as the New 52 armor

Nice. I think the blue could be toned down a little, but otherwise it's great looking brighter.

The Captain Marvel suit is more respectable and badass than Ms Marvel's:

Cavill's suit looks better than the current New 52 one, it looks alien like it should instead of cheesy spandex. There's more negativity online towards this Supergirl suit, which I like fine, but pants a la Faora would've made it better and more practical than the skirt/leggings combo.

It's alright, it's not quite as drastic a step away from the perseived classic outfit, however they seem to have tried to lean a little towards the slightly darker colours that Henry Cavill's Man of Steel's suit featured.

However Snyder has corrected an error he made with Man of Steel's suit by just brightening it up a little & I think this outfit particularly the blue needs a bit of a brightening if it looks as dark is this picture in the pilot.

Also although it's not necessarily a problem now, but I think the :super: looks a little out of place on what I'd describe as a more modern Supergirl outfit. Perhaps it will grow on me after I've seen the pilot but I kinda think that the classic :super: logo looks a little out of place on the outfit.. a Man of Steel style one would have fitted the tone of the outfit a little better... even if you keep it in the same style ie minus the yellow/gold portion.

There are 2 other things I think could make the suit, even if it remained unchanged, look brighter. Lose the tights. I mean that more to benefit the brightness of the suit not because I want to ogle at Melissa Benoist's legs. I think it would be a subtle change that could make a big difference.

The 2nd thing would be, make her hair more blonde. At the moment it looks a little too dark. Although that could just be the lighting of the picture, but assuming it isn't she needs to be more blonde. I'm talking Pamela Anderson like blonde.

But overall, this isn't like the Wonder Woman TV show outfit in which it kinda put me off even watching the pilot. I think the outfit looks fairly decent. If the show gets picked up I imagine there will be room for change.

Nobody is hiding behind anything. Besides showing a little mid driff would not only spice up the look a bit but it would also break up the suit nicely and provide her with a distinguished look.

I was hoping for something more like this.

Agreed! Something like this would have been way better than what the showrunners and costume designer went with.

It's too bad. Oh well....

It was never going to look like that, you don't want the public to think the show is part of the DCCU, they had to do their own take to differentiate themselves.

And now the fun part, the opposite opinion!

That would be my ideal version. Looks like she could stand beside Reeve in that.

Who's right? Me of course! :hehe: ;)

Everyone has an opinion, that's why the producers must follow their own vision, it's impossible to please everyone.

This suit is 10 times better than the one CBS just revealed. I just don't understand why the real one has such a high waist. It makes the whole thing look really weird. And the collar and S are too low. This one here is better in every way.

Wrong.

Colleen Atwood is batting 100% when it comes to the superhero costumes she's designed thus far, which is pretty much what you'd expect from a 3-time Oscar-winner.
