Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 56

I agree. I've seen Ragnarok 4X now and my opinion on it goes down after each watch. How different Thor was just threw me off and I still don't really like his characterization in it, but he was so much better in Infinity War.

Counterpoint - Ragnarok was a GD frikkin' delight. Laugh out loud hilarity with fantastic characters, gorgeous Kirby inspired designs, and a thoughtful plot about colonialism. Plus Led Zeppelin.

I enjoyed sad Thor in Infinity War, but Ragnarok ticked all of my boxes for what a superhero flick should be.

Ragnarok is everything I don't want a comic book movie to be. I wasn't entertained, I wasn't involved emotionally, it didn't make me laugh, it didn't look good enough, it ruined Banner, and it didn't improve Thor in any way.

But it had Led Zeppelin.

Are you telling us that your soul did not sing?

I liked the Shazam trailer. I really like the leap a building in a single bound gag. Still worried about the costume and really worried about the threat/villain.

Ragnarok is pure comic book joy.

Ragnarok only gets better on repeat viewings. Everyone fixates on the jokes (understandable given that it’s an out-and-out comedy) but it never gets enough credit in fan circles for it’s message about colonialism & immigration. Obviously it isn’t as dramatically hefty as Black Panther, but to write it off as only silly jokes is plain wrong.

Ragnarok is my ultimate feel good movie, I often put it on if I've had a really sucktastic day and need a good cheering up. It's everything I want from a CBM and more, plus I just adore Taika Waititi. His sense of humour is pretty much my sense of humour, so all the funny bits really land for me. Great characters, great action, great music, great sets and costumes, great actors, great director, great Kirby designs and influences everywhere, Cate Blanchett in a skin-tight outfit and flipping Led Zeppelin. What else could I ever possibly want or need? :applaud

Ragnarok made me care about Thor after mostly failed attempts in other movies (though I did like him in Avengers). It’s one of my favorite Comicbook movies. And it had the best version of Hulk thus far.

I did like the Thor character as presented in the first two films and I thought the films themselves were decent in that I could put them on and enjoy them, but they didn't leave a big impression on me. Ragnarok was great.

It was everything I want a comic book movie to be. I was entertained, I was involved emotionally, it made me laugh, it looked really nice, it saved Banner, and it improved Thor in a major way.

And it had Led Zeppelin!

I have this friend who is a diehard Thor fan and she hated Ragnarok. I guess she thought it was too jokey or something. Then again, she liked the Warcraft movie so her taste is... well...

I don't know. I loved it. I thought it was the best Thor movie yet. So much fun. I like the first Thor but TDW is easily Marvel's worst movie and Thor was really boring in Ultron, so I appreciate the turnaround they did with him in Ragnarok.

I really like Ragnarok. Waititi’s sense of humor just really clicks with me. I love his other work. I do have issues with some of the use of humor and the film overall, but the majority is good enough for it to not affect my enjoyment.

Ragnarok is great and perhaps the most well-paced film in the MCU. Everything just flows so the editing job was fantastic. On top of that you have several great characters that are all distinct from each other, great action, a great score (not just Led Zeppelin but the great mix of synth and orchestral music), Taikas great sense of humor mixed with some serious undertones, and some extremely "comic booky" visuals. Probably the most rewatchable superhero film out there for me (maybe I should get into cosmic mode by watching it tonight, before watching CM tomorrow).

Poor Thor had to first let a villain win in his own film, only to fail to stop the next villain to win in Infinity War though.

I admittedly was a bit skeptical about Ragnarok at first; I loved Waititi's other films, but I had always envisioned the LOTR/Return of the King style epic finale for Thor's trilogy. So I understand why some people wanted that and were let down at a more light and jokey (and less asgard/mythology heavy) movie.

But Waititi just nailed it so well, the jokes were hysterical, the Kirby influence was beautiful, the characters were all great and loveable (Even Strange got an upgrade from his first film, imo).

Plus, that movie is (low key(or should I say lo-ki)) one of the most continuity rich films Marvel has put out, in the sense of small callbacks and subtle nods to several of the earlier films without it intruding on the main narrative. It's no Civil War where you have to have seen the last 20 movies to understand what was going on, but there are so many callbacks that it really enhances the experience.

Ragnarok would be a Top 5 film in the DCEU, Spider-Man series, or the X-Men series. The fact that it exists in the same franchise as Avengers, TWS, IW, GOTG, Iron Man and CW prevents that.

I'd put it above GOTG actually, and maybe equal with Civil War, but yeah, it's pretty crowded at the top

No...lol that movie wasn't good.

Ragnarok is still probably in my top 10 MCU, but I can't put it much higher than that.

Things about it I really enjoy, but certain things I don't like that doesn't allow it to move up on my ranking

I really liked the action in Ragnarok but everything else was just a disappointment. It's hard to take a movie seriously when it doesn't even feel like the director takes his story seriously. I thought the first Thor movie was very promising but the sequels squandered all that potential.

Ragnarok is easily my favorite Marvel film and I also think it is easily the best. Every time I watch it, I like it more.

Captain Marvel reviews remind me so much of their other origins flicks. A lot of the positive reviews read as it being competently made, but not much else.

In what way is the director not taking his own story seriously with Ragnarok? By having jokes?

Ragnarok is the tale of a man who is down on his luck, who also happens to be the God of Thunder. You have this Norse God who is lacking in confidence, even with all his power. That convey that through both comedy and drama, and in no way does the film not take his journey seriously.
