Comics Superman Comics Reccomendations

Depends. I was never a fan of Byrne's Superman, but if you liked Vol. 1, you'll probably like the rest of it.

I enjoyed it yes, not the best Superman story i have read, but enjoyable non the less.

The writing is a bit dated (wonder why that is), but there are some good stories in the other volumes. Superman's cast of supporting characters (Cat, Jimmy, Perry, and Maggie Sawyer especially, among others) are developed and established better than any writer has ever done before or after, IMO. Plus there are the first appearances of some cool villains, like Metallo, Skyhook, Prankster, and Toyman.

I think it's in issue #9 (not sure which volume that would be in) where there's a short story about Lex at a restaurant toying with a random waitress and completely screwing her over, showing just how evil the (then) new Lex Luthor was, even just in his spare time. I don't have the comic with me right at the moment, so I'm not sure exactly which issue it's in.

The stories are like MOS, meaning you shouldn't expect every plot thread to be tied up by the end of each arc. So yeah, just keep in mind that this was a time when they were working to establish elements in Superman's new universe and purposely set up some unresolved plot points to use in the future, much like a television series. Personally, that's the way I compare MOS with later stories like Birthright that come to a satisfying conclusion; MOS is more like an ongoing TV series (never intending to end), while Birthright, Godfall, etc, are more akin to movies. That's just me, though.

^Thanks for the info, i'll be getting the other issues soon.

Just readin Man Of Steel Vol.1 now, are the other books in the series worth getting as well?

I'll tell you what, don't get the other Man of Steel volumes, get Superman: Exile instead. It's a huge epic (300 pages) from the 80s which sees Supes self-banished into space to live there, and he ends up on Warworld, and obviously earth really needs him when he's gone....it also reveals a lot about the post-Crisis Krypton.

It's absolutely one of the best and most enjoyable Superman stories I've ever read. I love it.

sounds interesting. Who did the art & writing ?

Writers: Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, George Perez, Roger Stern
Among the artists: Brett Breeding, Jurgens, Mike Mignola, Ordway, Curt Swan, Dennis Janke

I echo what Kevin said. It's a very enjoyable and insightful Supes read.

ah cool. I will definitely have a look at it. Your enjoyment is communicative.

BTW, Mister J where does the purple sentence at the bottom of your post come from ?

Good stuff. Hope you like it.

The quote is The Joker's first dialogue from Batman #1.

Thanks for the recommendation, i'll see if i can get my hands on it.

Hey would someone recommend "last son" ? (Donner/Johns/Kubert) It sounds interesting but ... I was pleased with the stories before one UYear later and I'm a little worried about the stories occuring after the crisis. So what would you say. Yay or nay.

I think that once u read Superman for all seasons, u dont need to read any other Superman story...That is the definitive Superman story for me.

I've read a the last parts of "Up, Up and Away" last year when it came out. I believe it got collected and it was good. I can't comment on the Donner one especially as I think they'll end it in an annual which I won't get. So I'll have to wait for a TPB. Oh well. Along with a thousand others.

I had a quick look at that but didnt like the art, is it really that good?

Yes, it is.

Well, maybe not THE Superman story, but it's definitely one of the absolute best.

It is the absolute story for me : sensitive, romantic, poetic, heroic, full of hope and full of love. And the art is tim Sale. One could complain his Superman is bizarre (!) but he works perfectly fine into the story.Since, we are in the recommendation thread, I recommend this one to you, strongly.
BTW, have you tried to read Lex Luthor : Man of Steel ? You told me you would give it a try.

Tim Sale is an amazing artist. His composition, backgrounds, sense of storytelling. That combined with those amazing watercolours makes the story very special to me.

How can you look at the depiction of Clark and Lana flying over Smallville and not love it? And when Clark and Pa Kent are watching the sunset?

That is art at best, IMO.

I have literally JUST bought this, will be reading it soon.

Also, do you know if it comes AFTER the Death/Without/Return trilogy?

It comes before. We get an introduction to the eradicator( the Superman with glasses in the return story) and its history in this story..

I know I've asked this a million times on here, but I'm asking again buease I can't seen to remember for some reason. What is the name of the comic where Superman crashes in Gotham and becomes Batman. Thanks for answering this question again.
