As much as I'd like to see a new Superman film, I'm afraid that in WB's attempts at trying to satisfy audiences by trying to make a darker, more action oriented Superman, they're gonna screw up and ultimately hurt the character worse than SR did. I mean look at the scripts to Tim Burton's Superman and Superman: Flyby, that is the result when the studio has lost sight as to what the character should be.
While I am entirely on board for a reboot, I think WB should simply take their time, not make any brash decisions, and most importantly remember who Superman is. It is possible to make a Superman film that doesn't portray Superman as dark and brooding. If anything films like Star Trek showed that audiences are still willing to watch a fun, family friendly, popcorn flick, which is what Superman is all about. If WB tries to go all TDK on Supes, then the franchise will suffer because children make up a large part of the core audience of Superman. In these times children need something to look up to, like we did when we were young, and as much as I loved TDK, I'd never take a kid under the age of at least 12 to go see it. In times as cynical as these I think the children of today have lost that childlike innocence that is Superman, and I think a Superman film will show children that it's alright to still be a kid. Does anyone truly remember when they first discovered Superman as a child? You thrilled to the adventures because he was a genuine hero, someone you can look up to. He's not cynical, not dark, and is most importantly, as much as many hate this phrase, a big blue boy scout.
Superman is comparable I think to Iron Man in terms of how the tone of the reboot should be handled. It was comedic, fun, energetic, but at the same time family friendly and managed to pack a dramatic punch. A Superman reboot with that kind of tone would be amazing!
One final thought. I think if WB does indeed reboot Supes, then they should also remember story first, action second. Look at any good action/adventure film ever made and that was the key to their success (i.e. Star Wars '77, Spider-man 2, and TDK). Now I'm not suggesting that the reboot be as sparse on the action as SR was, but I do think that the Superman reboot should have more breathing room than a film like Transformers. That sort of intensity works for Transformers, not Superman; the action in a Superman film should be more epic in scale, and maybe a tad more sophisticated. Also, take time in the story to develop some true drama, thus evoking some genuine emotion.
Whew, sorry for that rant, but it felt good to get some of these thoughts off my chest. Haven't really been able to frequent the boards much in the past year and I'm trying to start back up again.
