Superman Reboot Writers Workshop

My film would be the epic tragic story of two worlds; told in a non-linear way with Brainiac as the key figure that connects them together.

Jor-El and Kal-El would essentially be the protagonists of the story in their respective times and respective worlds, with Brainiac as the common villian.

It would be called "The Last Son" or "The Man of Tomorrow"

Starring:

Daniel Day Lewis as Jor-El

(Luthor and Jimmy Olsen will not be in the first film)

I'm still undecided on the Kents.

I like your ideas and Dan Byrd is a really good choice for Jimmy. Where does the story go from after the title, does it flash back or go forward from there?
If you read Superman: Birthright it takes many things from that. Brainiac is the main villain if the positive feedback is good I will finish the script and send it in

I would appreciate more feedback on the script then my casting choices. Thank you

some nice casting choices but i still in mind set if they want to start clean over they need to have a totally new cast for all.

I think it is great that you guys want to get involved in screenwriting, you could say I know a thing or two about the field, problem is we can't all open our own threads. We have to put it in one big thread where everybody can post their ideas.

Allright. Here's my rough first draft for Superman: Up in the Sky. I did mention it's a rough draft, didn't I? Good.

If you wanna know why you should bother reading, it has Parasite, Manchester Black, Livewire and Silver Banshee.:cwink:

I'd vote for both reboot of Superman and a JL movie. I think you could spend 2-3 movies reestablishing Superman that would then set the stage for the first JL movie.

Since this thread is labeled "workshop", here's some stuff I was kicking around in my head:

I've always liked the idea that Superman was basically the first super-powered costumed hero.

As for the reboot itself the main thing is they'd would probably want to avoid going through every detail of his origin again *especially* with 8 seasons of Smallville (and probably more since anti-costume snob Tom Welling wants to keep the show going but not actually take the character the distance to the cape).

So my idea is to give audiences particular glimpses of his background in each of the 3 movies via flashback while the movies themselves deal with a bigger main plot. This way you can establish some background without a slog through his entire origin story that would just be the first Reeve movie all over again.

In the begining of the first first we get to see a bit of Krypton and the touching rocket launch sequence. I think almost any version of that scene is heartbreaking. I mean c'mon, two parents having to say goodbye to their only child while their world dies around them? If that doesn't register with you then you're not human. We could follow the rocket as the opening credits roll and then cut from there to Metropolis.

Then in the proceeding films we could get a little bit of his Smallville years in the second and then seeing how he ultimately becomes Superman in the third. Basically I want to see the decision and the source of the costume.

For the main plots I think three things need to be avoided. 1: Guys in business suits as the main bad. 2: Villains with powers exactly like his. 3: Kryptonite (at least for movie 1 and 2).

I'd keep Luthor in the game but I would make him more Lois and Clark's enemy at first than Supermans. He's Nixon to their Woodward and Bernstein. Maybe make him Mayor of Metropolis. More of a constant thorn than the principal advesary.

We'd have the classic romantic triangle. Clark I would like to see sort of mild-mannered but not quite cartoonish like Reeve. As much as I have problems with Smallville, there was a recent episode titled Hex where the cirmcumstances of the story have him acting basically in a very classically Clark Kent manner and i think Welling actually hit on a perfect middle ground for approaching Metropolis Clark that I think really works.

For the main advesary I want to see Brainiac in the first. I'm thinking something along the lines of his STAS version only taken to a much bigger scale. Hell I wouldn't even mind something akin to his chrome skeleton look from Super Powers. Brainiac being linked to Krypton and its demise is one of the most brilliant ideas STAS ever IMO.

From there one possibility I thought about was to do the Death and Return story only minus the JL beatdown and various would-be Supermen. The origins of Doomsday could be tied back to Brainiac and Krypton itself of course. Instead of the assortment of Supermen, in the absence of Superman the other superheroes begin to emerge in part because they are answering the call of a world without Superman.

But Doomsday comes back and the other heroes are now having the fight of their lives. Just when it is looking hopeless for them and the rest of the world, Superman returns (no pun intended) and kicks some serious ass both himself as well as by teaming up with the others. This would ultimately lead to the formation of the Justice League.

In the aftermath of the Death and Return events, Clark/Superman has gained some perspective and decides it's time to share his secret with Lois. Since it would be the 3rd movie and likely the final one of this continuity it could end with Lois and Clark getting married or basically just leave it with the change in status quo there. The triangle is no more, now there is a couple looking foward to their future and at the same time, as Superman he is looking to a new future of no longer flying alone but instead working alongside a team of peers, comrades, and friends.

We need a reboot like Batman Begins... Plus, the Death of Superman was already made in that cartoon. It is an overrated story, IMO.

It is, I agree. ..but I think it's the kind of thing that could be tweaked and made into something good for a movie.

Speaking of that DTV I can't believe he attempted the cheek lines again after how miserable it looked during the first season of JL.

yea i agree if they are rebooting superman if it was done in style like BB did its flashbacks/present day scenes it could work out well.

Hoping to finish my script by June, Superman's month.

WB's just needs to suck it up and hire JJ Abrams to direct the next Supes film. JJ's Star Trek looks awesome! Just have JJ keep Routh.

The story should be done by Abrams and Geoff Johns and the screenplay done by Orci and Kurtzman.

Update the FLYBY script by adding Braniac and his creepy robots. Make Luthor a corporate mogul. Lets see Superman get pissed and be in some super fights and action scenes which we have never seen before in a Superman film.

WB's should just go with that team and have confidence in it and don't look back.

but would jj want to take on superman after the mess that happened when he originally was to do it.

As much as I'd like to see a new Superman film, I'm afraid that in WB's attempts at trying to satisfy audiences by trying to make a darker, more action oriented Superman, they're gonna screw up and ultimately hurt the character worse than SR did. I mean look at the scripts to Tim Burton's Superman and Superman: Flyby, that is the result when the studio has lost sight as to what the character should be.

While I am entirely on board for a reboot, I think WB should simply take their time, not make any brash decisions, and most importantly remember who Superman is. It is possible to make a Superman film that doesn't portray Superman as dark and brooding. If anything films like Star Trek showed that audiences are still willing to watch a fun, family friendly, popcorn flick, which is what Superman is all about. If WB tries to go all TDK on Supes, then the franchise will suffer because children make up a large part of the core audience of Superman. In these times children need something to look up to, like we did when we were young, and as much as I loved TDK, I'd never take a kid under the age of at least 12 to go see it. In times as cynical as these I think the children of today have lost that childlike innocence that is Superman, and I think a Superman film will show children that it's alright to still be a kid. Does anyone truly remember when they first discovered Superman as a child? You thrilled to the adventures because he was a genuine hero, someone you can look up to. He's not cynical, not dark, and is most importantly, as much as many hate this phrase, a big blue boy scout.

Superman is comparable I think to Iron Man in terms of how the tone of the reboot should be handled. It was comedic, fun, energetic, but at the same time family friendly and managed to pack a dramatic punch. A Superman reboot with that kind of tone would be amazing!

One final thought. I think if WB does indeed reboot Supes, then they should also remember story first, action second. Look at any good action/adventure film ever made and that was the key to their success (i.e. Star Wars '77, Spider-man 2, and TDK). Now I'm not suggesting that the reboot be as sparse on the action as SR was, but I do think that the Superman reboot should have more breathing room than a film like Transformers. That sort of intensity works for Transformers, not Superman; the action in a Superman film should be more epic in scale, and maybe a tad more sophisticated. Also, take time in the story to develop some true drama, thus evoking some genuine emotion.

Whew, sorry for that rant, but it felt good to get some of these thoughts off my chest. Haven't really been able to frequent the boards much in the past year and I'm trying to start back up again.

Your post is correct in every single way. Great post!

yea you brought up alot of good points. hopefully wb plays it smart with superman its next go.

They should make a Smallville movie following the great season finale we had yesterday. Plus we wouldn't need to hire any great actors, the Smallville cast is awesome, starting with the lead actor of course.

That finale was idiotic, they killed off Jimmy Olson for Christ's sake.
