Superman Reboot Writers Workshop

P.S. cast for Excel's

S U P E R M A N

Superman: Ryan McPartlin
No clue if he can act, but this is what he looks like
5.jpg

Lois Lane: Evangeline Lilly
Shes the hot, strong but fragile girl on Lost who looks HOT but not riduclous; 'would never been a reporter' hot.

Lex Luthor: Leonardo DiCaprio
With Hair; He would be brilliant as my Luthor: Young, Hadnsome, Obsessive, Arrogant, Brilliant, Cunning genius who slowly begins to use his brains for his own benefits at the film goes on...

Jor-el: Russel Crowe
His role would be minimal in the first, only used in 2 scenes: Krypton flashback and the "Heritage Discovery" scene.

Havoc: Joaquin Phoenix
Sneering, imposing attitude with a snakes hissing voice. He'd rock as Lord Havoc, tthe alien bounty sent to hunt down Kal-el by Brainiac.

Jimmy Olsen: Eric Christian Olsen
Perry White: Dennis Farina
Brainiac: Jason Isaacs
He'd have larger role in 2 and MUCH larger role in 3.

My vision of a Supes movie is basically the Alex Ford script rewritten to put inside the origin in flashbacks and altering the order of some scenes. Kind of Superman meets Memento. I'll do it when I have some time...

Sounds like mine...my order of events goes...

1. Superman Vs. Havoc/super villain-cut away at climax
2. FLASHBACK: Clark arrives at Daily Planet, Superman arrives in Metrpolis, flees to Smallville in fear of being found!
3. Smallville -growing up - flashbacks
4. Superman realizes hes the man for the job and becomes superhero, vies for lois lanes affections, ect.
5. Superman nearly killed in fight as we catch up to the very begining as he saves the woman who just dumped him (Lois).
6. Superman revived by Jor0-el in fortress
7. FLASHBACK: Kryptons dismise-Clark discovers finally what hes wanted all his life: he is this way; he is here; for a reason after all! He gets PUMPED-saves himself by taking life technology Brainiac desires, and goes and kicks ass!

what's great about all of your ideas is that they are.....dare I say......CREATIVE! They're FRESH.....and they EMBRACE the rich mythos of the Superman universe.......NOT JUST THE DONNER VERSE!!!!

I'll admit that my knowledge of the overall Superman mythos is very limited. I'm more knowledgeable about Spidey, Bats, and X-men than Supes.

However, I would certainly be entertained by these story ideas.....and I would appreciate the rich mythos of Superman more!

Wow, these aren't bad though many are just good bits. The only real complete one I reads through was Matts; comments...

Sound for sure like itd be a critical fave, however I think it would fall under a similar category that RETURNS got in that is a bit too serious; but other than that your the only one who seems to have gotten the general way the film would need to function (that Superman needs to be born, than go away, before finally returning in full power as this is the formula that makes the film uplifting).

Well, thanks very much :yay:

As for the part about it being too serious, obviously some humor would be sprinkled in throughout. I only outlined specific plot points. Obviously the main plot points of a non-comedy are going to be dramatic. There would be filler scenes at the Planet, with Pete Ross in Smallville, etc...all of which would take a lighter tone than Luthor threatening to kill residents of Metropolis if Superman doesn't leave :cwink:

BUTTTT..... I still say my own is the best. The story si one that hasnt been done for movies (new badass villain, young supes and lex vying for young Lois's affection).

I think combo of epic character arcs, mind blowing action, chick flick sized love story, and above all wall-to-wall fun. But if all yall took the best parts of each story and packed em into one huge ass movie; itd rock!

I've only browsed through yours so far. I'm not sure how I feel about your villain. Superman's rogues are so rich and very few have been on screen. Why create a new one when Metallo, Bizarro, Parasite, Brainiac, etc are all begging to be adapted? Also I don't like Lois finding out in the first movie. In fact, I think if you go origin route, Lois should be more of a background character as she was in mine. Hints of romance and flirtation between her, Clark, and Superman. But in the end, Clark is still trying to find his place in the world and is drawn back to the girl he left in Smallville, Lana. That is what I love about her sending him back to Metropolis in Superman For All Seasons. It is the closure on his first love. Lana is far more important than many Superman fans realize and should be a prominent part of an origin movie.

SUPERMAN RETURNS
Characters: Superman/Clark Kent/Kal-El, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, John Corben/Metallo, Jor-El, Lara Lor-Van, Martha Kent, Jonathan Kent, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White..

ACT 1
-Like in the 1978 Superman movie, the film starts with a red curtain on stage (kinda like in a theatre) opening, and showing real sequences of Superman’s origins (the civil war in Krypton, Jor-El finding out about Krypton’s impending doom, Jor-El creating a rocket ship for his son, Jor-El sending baby Kal to Earth, Krypton exploding, Kal-El landing near Ma and Pa Kent’s house along with other meteorites all over America) with a kid narrating his origins. His narration will end about Superman leaving Earth when astronomers found out that Krypton is alive. The view will leave Earth and into space where the familiar opening credits will begin.

-Opening credits will end on the remains of planet Krypton. Superman is on a spaceship navigating the remains. Jor-El is speaking to him thru the ship’s computer. They speak about the astronomers making a mistake about Krypton being alive. Superman blames himself for the mistake and says that he never should have left Earth and its people, but that he only wants to find out if his home planet was really still alive.
-Superman’s spaceship is rocked hard by an explosion. Jor-El warns him about a nearby fighting space jets trying to hit them, and that Superman cannot use his powers since there is no yellow sun near Krypton. Superman tries to escape the fighting space jets but is hit hard and crashes his space ship. Superman is knocked out.
-Superman opens his eyes to see gladiator-looking aliens with him. All of them are chained. Superman asks one of the gladiator aliens where they are, the alien tells him they are in hell. Apparently, he was taken by the space jets to a savage-looking alien world. Alien soldiers then picks Superman up and carries him to a gladiator arena where thousands of aliens cheer violently. An announcer introduces Superman to where he is, and tells him they are in the planet Apokalips, where alien prisoners are used for gladiator battles. The announcer asks Superman what planet he came from, Superman replies that he’s from planet Earth. The announcer searches for information regarding Earth in a hi-tech alien computer. The announcer finds out that Earthlings live under a yellow sun, which means that they do not gain powers under a yellow sun (which is also the sun of planet Apokalips). The announcer asks the big guy (named Mongul) on the throne what to do with the supposed Earthling. Mongul tells the announcer to bring out some of their animals to fight Superman, since a real gladiator might kill Superman too easily. Wild alien creatures is then let out, and to the crowd’s amazement, Supes beats them all very fast. Mongul is the one most surprised; surely, an Earthling cannot be strong under a yellow sun. Mongul then commands the announcer to bring out their DNA scanning machine to make sure where Supes is really from. The machine shows that Superman is a Kryptonian, to the surprise of Mongul, for everyone thought no Kryptonian had survived from the explosion. Mongul stands from his throne and asks Superman aggressively how he survived Krypton, Superman instead commands Mongul to let him and the other alien prisoners out and stop the gladiator battles. Mongul of course refuses and instead sends out his bodyguard named Draaga. Superman fights Draaga and wins easily and once again orders Mongul to let him and the others go. Mongul refuses again. Superman this time attacks Mongul which ensues a big fight between Supes and Mongul and the alien soldiers. In this fight, Superman is able to free the other alien prisoners and help him fight Mongul and the soldiers. Superman and the prisoners win. One of the prisoners leads Superman to his spaceship in gratitude of Superman saving them. Superman enters the ship and types in the coordinates of Earth’s location. The space ship zooms forward.

-On planet Earth, Martha and Jonathan Kent are celebrating Clark’s b-day with a cake. They cry to each other and reassures that their adoptive son is safe. Here, we find out that Superman has been gone for 3 years. As Martha Kent cleans the dishes, the ground and everything starts to tremble and they see outside a spaceship crash in their farm. Martha and Jonathan approach the ship, and finds Clark unconscious.
-Clark wakes up in the morning and goes out of the house. Clark reminisce his past. As Pete Ross and Lana Lang drives by the Kent residence, they are surprised to see Clark standing by the fence. They greet each other and talk (Clark tells them that his vacation on Asia was very good, Clark finds out that Pete and Lana are now a couple, Lana also proposes that they have a dinner later to celebrate Clark’s return).
-Clark goes back inside their house to find Ma Kent cleaning. Clark embraces her mom and talk about what happened. Clark tells Ma that Krypton indeed had not survived, and that he is all alone. Their talk ends with Ma telling Clark that he’ll never be alone.
-Clark goes to his Pa who is doing some farm work. They talk (Clark tells his Pa that he might be staying in Smallville after all since he wants to help, Pa tells him that he means much much more to the world than just a farmer).
-At night, Pete and Lana visits the Kent residence to have dinner with them. A twister then arrives at Smallville, Clark has no choice but to leave the house and save Smallville in civilian clothes, Lana and Pete finally finds out that Clark is Superman, and Lana tells Clark that being Superman is what he should do.
-The day after, Pa and Ma Kent approaches Clark who is standing in the farm carrying big bags. Clark tells them that he will reactivate the Fortress of Solitude and continue being Superman in Metropolis. Ma and Pa Kent gives him his Superman costume. They hug each other, then Clark leaves.

-Clark goes to the Fortress of Solitude and tells Jor-El that he’ll be resuming his duties as Superman. Jor-El gives him his blessing. Clark then dons the Superman costume (accompanied by some epic music) and flies off the Fortress to return to Metropolis.
END OF ACT 1

Sorry, didnt see the other thread, and it didnt have a poll on either so at least this makes up for that.

And i agree, i want to see Brandon as Supes AT LEAST 2 more times.

I'll post some more of mine.

During the opening credits we watch young Kal-El zoom through the solar systems...perhaps to show Jor-El's genius, each planet he comes upon the computer of his ship scans to see if it is suitable for him, before he finally arrives on Earth...as his ship descends we cut to Smallville Kansas.

Here we see Jonathan and Martha Kent driving. They are discussing the trip they just took. They are on their way back from a doctor. They are unable to concieve children and the doctor confirmed they cannot. It is a very somber, sad time for them. Jonathan tries to reassure Martha, unsuccessfully. However, despite the sadness they are feeling, everything seems very calm...key word, seems. Suddenly something crashes into the ground from the sky, Jonathan swerves to avoid it and runs off the road. He looks at the tire on his truck. The truck is relatively undamaged but stuck in a ditch. Jonathan tries to push it out, while Martha investigates what crashed. All she finds is the shuttle, empty, with Kal-El's blanket. Jonathan continues to struggle with the truck, only to suddenly find it lifted out of the ditch. The camera pans to toddler Kal-El, holding the truck in the air, giggling. I think that is such a wonderful scene in the Donner movies and should carry over. Little homages are never a bad thing, after all. Martha rushes over and lifts the baby as he sets the truck back on the ground. There are no words in this scene...an awe-struck Jonathan looks to Martha. The audience can infer by her face and actions towards the baby that she has made up her mind. Jonathan seems like he wants to protest, but also seems to understand the futility of it. Reluctantly, he loads Clark's ship onto the truck and the Kent family sets off towards their farm which could be seen in the distance as they drive away.

We then cut to a montage of the Kents on their farm adjusting to raising a super powered son as he grows up. Just a light hearted little montage. Things like Martha trying to feed baby Clark. She blows on it to cool it off, baby Clark in his high chair imitates, and his super breath freezes the spoon and food. Playing catch with Pa only to launch the ball into the next county. But also normal things, to emphasize that while Clark is different, he was raised and loved like a normal child by the Kents. Show him at church with his parents, playing with his dogs, helping on the farm, etc. We watch him grow during this time.

After the montage, we meet a teenaged Clark Kent, now a senior at Smallville High. From here my plot would loosely follow what I consider the definitive Superman story. Jeph Loeb's A Superman For All Seasons.

The Smallville sequence would last about a half hour. During this time, we learn about Clark's life. His relationship with childhood sweetheart Lana Lang, his friendship with Pete who sees himself as bigger and better than being stuck in Smallville (and often teases Clark about being condemned to a life of a farmer). We see his relationship with his parents and their difficulty to guide Clark through this phase in his life, trying to find who he is and what to do. The Smaillville sequence climaxes with two very poignant sequences. First a Tornado that rips through the town. Anyone who has read FAS should be familiar with this. During the tornado Clark first learns he can fly as he pulls a gas station attendant out of the way of the tornado and the explosion of the gas station it causes. Afterwards, he returns to the farm to see the damage. He flies into the air with his new found ability and looks over the town, seeing the damage he lands, looks to his parents and tells them "I could've done more." For me, this is one of the most important Superman scenes ever. The way Loeb wrote it combined with Pa's narration, perfectly describes Superman's motivations and who he is. He doesn't have a tragic event that shapes him...he is simply a good person who wants to help. Pa tries to comfort him, but with little success. It is at this point, he realizes his son is becoming a man, and has to leave the nest.

But first he has to say goodbye to Lana, again, anyone familiar with FAS is familiar with this. He takes her out to the Kent fields, and shows her he can fly. Another very important scene. It shows how important Lana is to Clark. He shares a very important secret with her. As they fly however, she realizes that he is leaving as well.

We then cut to the next day...he says goodbye to his parents, and sets off.

End act one.

more, later, if I'm in the mood.

From what I have read so far a lot of you guys script's are totally flawed, Jorel sent his son to earth knowing he would have god like powers you saying his ship scanned for planets makes Jorel seem like an idiot.

I haven't cread every treatment in this thread but I just read Matt's one and it's rock solid. Very well done, traditional and all, made me feel there's an actual point in doing another Superman origin movie. I have always liked the idea of adding a political wings fight on the Krypton's destruction (and THAT being the reason behind the planet's explosion). I could clearly saw the battles, etc.

I also liked the growing Clark montage but please, don't make it a Hollywood average humorous montage.

Another little change I'd make would be Lois going "what a..." cut to a Daily Plabet's headlines that reads in big letters : "SUPERMAN!"

And the fact that Perry doesn't give Clark the job until he brings the excusive interview... genius! :)

Now... Superman crushes the Kryptonite with his bare hands? Maybe I skipped a line.

But overall a very good treatment. About perfection indeed. Metallo sounds like the perfect choice for a super-villiain since he has everything to do with Kryptonite and Kryptonite is necessary for a Superman's origin movie IMO. And the way Kryptonite appears is great too. Just when you believe nothing can stop Supes, BAM he feels weird and finds put he's not almighty.

Congratz Matt.

That said, it reminded me of another detail that I would include in my approach. Something that I thought long before I read "Birthright" but that is there too: people would have a distrust stage when they know about Superman. Sure, Lois and such would be saying he saved the day but there must be other perception that being him an alien with unlimited strenght and X-ray vision... well, who can stop him? How can we trust him? Is he preparing an alien invasion? Of course by the end of the movie, there'll be no doubt about his intentions.

In pre-crisis, yes. I prefer post-crisis and TAS, where Jor-El isn't a prophet who knows his son will become a god, but simply a desperate man who wants to save his son.

As for the ship scanning planets, how does it make Jor-El look like an idiot? A ship that scans for a suitable home for his son is pretty ingenius to me. I simply mean it scans to ensure that the planet can contain Kal-El. It wouldn't do the baby much good if he landed on a planet with no water or life, now would it?

Thanks. Glad you liked it

As for Superman crushing Kryptonite in his bare hands, well, keep in mind, he does it almost immedietely after Metallo opens his chest, meaning he had only been exposed to it for a few seconds. He did it before it really drained him.

That is an interesting idea, and could make a very good subplot for Lois actually. Tension between her and her father, General Sam Lane who believes Superman to be a threat.

Well, I planned mine all out as 3 films...

After the 1st, the 2nd is called "Superman 2: The Man of Steel". Brianiac works for DARKSEID, who is the ruler of the galaxy in krypton part of the wood, and Brainiac & his armies; still led by Lord Havoc, go through with an all out invasion of Earth in order to defeat Kal-el and find his Kryptonion powers. Barainiac, who senses in fear of Kal-el within Havoc, bails Lex Luthor out an Airzona state prison, where he is serving after being convicted of treason to the world. With his guidance, they will find the Fortess of the Solitude. Then the alien ships arrives; dogfights between Jets and Alien pods; Havoc and friends flying around and blowing up tanks and jets. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois are getting closer together, and want to get married. Clark keeps his sharrade at the Planet, however outside he lives in "Kal-el" mode. Lois wants him to give up Superman as she feel sits dangerous but Superman can't, this leads to stress in theyre relationship. Superman and Havoc have one major street fight where superman loses and goes into hiding. At the fortress, Jor-el tells him who brainiac is and what happened to him: he was Jor-e'l's project he couldnt ever finish. The entire film, an emphasis is put on by Jor-el that Krypton was a tragedy, ect. Superman has scenes and confesses to Lois where he visibly misses/is hurt by not knowing his "real" family. Anyways, while in hiding, the alien ships take over Earth, but Havoc insists he and Brainiac stay back for some reason.

Superman secretly flies out into space and sneaks into Brainic main skull ship when Havoc attacks; theres a big blasstaff/fist fight in the ship; where we discover supermans powers are gone! Superman wins by kicking Havoc down a mile deep space well; and since he cant fly either; falls to the bottom, badly hurt. Meanwhile, the all out invasion of earth has begun. Ships to all city, humans as prisoner ect; including Lois! Everybody is wondering WHERE DA HELL IS SUPERMAN!

Superman finds Brainiac, and attempts to shut down the whole system but Briniac attacks; que huge fight though spaceship. Brainiac taunts Superman, telling him to give up; theres no hope for earth, it will sufer the same fate krypton did, ect. to which superman says "what?" Brainiac than utters the HUGE and SHOCKING TWIST...

BRAINIAC
Jor-el never told you the real story...Kryptons dismise was not by accident.
(beat)
Trusting all theyre power to a mahcine...dont you see, Kal-el?
(beat)
I pulled the plug.

Brainiac is responsible for krypton, and superman family-being destroyed! Oh bih! Brainiacs plan, hoping to demoralize superman, backfires, and superman rallys, wins, and pulls brainiac plug, destroying Brainiac AND HALTING THE INVASION! All the ships flee Earth and its happy days, though bad ones are coming; as Darkseid says to Havoc via intercom he wont be failed again...:wow: :wow: :wow:

I wonder why the poll results have altered so drastically. In the last exact duplicate of this thread that we had before Jamon decided not to scan down three threads, reboot was winning considerably, wasn't it?

Sorry, didnt see the other thread, and it didnt have a poll on either so at least this makes up for that.

And i agree, i want to see Brandon as Supes AT LEAST 2 more times.

Yes it did. This thread was just merged and the old poll was replaced. Not sure why.

In the last poll SR sequel with Bryan Singer was winning actually. Ironically that poll got rebooted.

The results will be the same here; but obviously there will be a greater difference since the vote is divided with more options.

I thought reboot was winning. At least it was the previous time I checked. It was definitely a closer race than this one.

Also, how is that ironic?

Yeah it was close. The Bryan Singer Sequel option was winning by like 7-10 votes. I had just linked that poll in this thread before it got merged and rebooted.

There were practically no votes for JL interestingly enough.

Yes it did. This thread was just merged and the old poll was replaced. Not sure why.

That was my fault, i merged the 2 together and i thought it would take the oldest threads poll but it didn't.

Working titles: Superman is...CLARK KENT!

Act I

Clark Kent, an egotistical, arrogant, all-around Alpha-male returns to Metropolis after a five year reporting expodition (to the Middle East) for the Daily Planet, but when he returns, he finds things have changed quite a bit: Lois is, as expected, still angry with Clark over how their relationship ended five years previously, and Jimmy has found himself a new mentor, Rick White, Perry's White's son and new Vice-Chief Editor for the Daily Planet (Perry is expected to make his retirement announcement in the coming weeks, and all signs point to Rick becoming the new Chief).

Kent feels out of place in the new atmosphere of the DP, but tries not to show weakness in front of Lois (Note: My Clark Kent hides his feelings for Lois by antagonizing her but even so, for a time, they did wind up in a romantic relationship. Let's just say that five years ago there was a series of events, as well as a certain oppertuinity being taken by a certain jock, that led to their break-up). Finding that he isn't making any progress with mending his relationship with Lois, Clark decides it's time for extreme measures to be taken: Superman must return.

When Rick and Lois are sent on assignment to cover the grand reopening of the Metropolis Sports Dome, Lex Luthor, billionaire owner of the dome (as well as much of Metropolis) and self-proclaimed former criminal (Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Superman had brought his dirty laundry into the public eye after some unexplored event that I'm too lazy to think up) is hosting the reopening, but secretly he is using the event to test a new model battle armor he plans to sell to the Russians. Luthor has secretly paid off a criminal (we'll call him Bob) to 'steal the unit and use it to cause mayham' at the party, and because the event is being televised, the Russian envoy sent to Metropolis, will be able to see the 'test run' on TV from his hotel.

When Kent (trying to turn all of the past five years worth of notes into a coherent story) catches the televised chaos on one of the DP's monitors he dashes for the nearest phonebooth.

Back at the party, just as Lois is about to crushed by the giant battle armors leg (she, of course, had fallen down) she is saved...by RICK! Bob is disgruntled and uses one of the armors arms to swipe at Rick, sending him crashing into some tables (with lots of expensive china and silverware on them)! Lois rushes to his side and just as they are about to be crushed a blue streak comes flying in, and with one hand, stops the giant armors leg from crushing the two reporters and then sends the suit stumbling backwards.

As this is happening, Luthor, looking on from a safe distance, grinds his teeth in anger as the Man of Steel appears before his eyes for the first time in six years...

***

Well, I'll do the other two acts later on.

LOL. Of course, but seeing Brandon one more time as Superman on a good sequel will give his career the push it needs. I wouldn't mind Brandon being Superman 10 times.

I want him to be Superman until he is too old to play him anymore thats how much I love Brandon as Superman plus he played a better Clark than Chris Reeve heck he played the best Clark I have seen sure he may not have said much but he added a sort of vulnerability to both the Superman and Clark character just like what Tobey did with Peter/Spider-man I love seeing my heroes have an innocent vulnerable side to them it makes you care and even shed a tear for them when they fall or feel down and it makes you cheer and smile even more when they come back triumphantly
It's just amazing how much Brandon said without actually saying anything look at the scene where he walks over to Lois about to talk to her but then stops when he sees Richard sitting next to her (its right before they talk about his super hearing) he is in the background in that scene but just the way he gestures as if he was about to speak then holds back that scene is a perfect example of how he says so much just by his body movements or facial expressions all this is just one of the many reasons why I want, hope that Brandon dons the cape and suit more than once (about 25 more times :cwink: ok at least for 2 more times) I was never able to see the original Superman films at the theater mainly because I was not born then so Brandon is really the Superman of my generation and if WB ever takes that away then that would be very sad to hear because while I may not be a "kid" anymore I still enjoy seeing one of my favorite if not THE favorite hero of mine come to life in Brandon Routh and that is something I want to talk about with my kids just like the way my Dad told me about the times he enjoyed seeing George Reeves as Superman

I'd like to see a sequel to Superman Returns. I'm definately interested in seeing where the story goes from here.

The other thing I want, regardless of what else happens with the property, is to see Routh continue in the role. If Singer's next movie is shelved, bring Routh in to JL. They've got something special with this guy and I think they'd be making a big mistake if they don't use it.
