So, here we are, two episodes into "Supergirl"'s run. It appears, much like the last Superman-related series on TV, we're bound to get a steady stream of references to the Man (and Girl) of Steel.
I would like this thread to serve as a collection of such references as the series progresses. Here are the references I've picked up over the first two episodes:
1.01 - "Pilot"
- An airplane in crisis serves as the first time Kara's used her powers publicly. This had been done previously in the first Superman film (twice, in fact - once with the Planet helicopter, and once with Air Force One), in the premiere episode of "Superman: The Animated Series" (the experimental jet, much like the one in the comics' Man of Steel miniseries), in Superman Returns (the space plane), and in the series finale of "Smallville" (again with Air Force One).
- One of the landmarks the plane passes is Binder Bridge, named for legendary DC Comics artist Otto Binder.
1.02 - "Stronger Together"
- While on the 'hero spree' in this episode, Winn and James alert Kara to the locations of crimes in progress. Two of the streets mentioned are Siegel Avenue, named for Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, and Donner Avenue, named for Richard Donner, who directed the first Superman film (and his own cut of Superman II).
- Also, Supergirl rescues a little girl's pet from a tree, another nod to the first Donner film (even though it was a python and not a cat).
- After Alex is kidnapped by the Hellgrammite, Supergirl springs into action, and for a moment, she closes her eyes and lets her super-hearing detect where the trouble is - a bit of a Returns reference.
I know there are others...let's have some fun with this.
(EDIT: How could I forget about a pair of catchphrases from the radio era? At the end of the pilot, James asks Kara, "Don't you have a city to protect - you know, 'up, up, and away'?"
In the beginning of this week's episode, as Kara is going through her training with the DEO, she remarks to her sister, "Besides, this looks like a job for Supergirl."
