Starbreeze lets 25 go after finishing Syndicate

15

Having completed Syndicate before EA ships it next week, Swedish developer Starbreeze has let several employees go. The company employed 93 individuals while working on the FPS reboot, 25 of which have been dismissed, according to GamesIndustry.biz (registration required). Starbreeze chairman Peter Tornquist has also reportedly resigned.

"It is sad that we are forced to make staff cutbacks affecting employees. But we have to reduce staff after the final delivery of the Syndicate," CEO Mikael Nermark told GI.biz. Layoffs at development studios on the cusp of shipping a title has quickly become the norm for the industry. We don't like to see anyone lose their job and hope the individuals in Sweden affected by our least favorite tag find new work as soon as possible.

What does it represent?

Dumbing down. Consolefication. Cynical cash in. Piddling on a games name.
This (probably Fallout 3 as well) is the only reason the game exists.

Why does Call Of Duty sell so well? Because it's accessible. You walk i in a line, things blow up every 2 minutes. You get rewarded even for failing in mulitplayer. It's an over-scripted, un-skill based, casual game that is very much like a metaphorical tumor that continues to grow.

How many AAA games have you played last year that involved any form of thinking? By that I mean, a required level of competence in order to succeed (you know, the rewarding part of games)? The only one I can think of, is Shogun 2. And possibly some handheld game I haven't played, as those generally seem good for tactical games. The Xbox360 and PS3 do not promote games that require any form of significant thinking. This is because of hand slapping dude bro games. Alot of great developers (e.g. Bioware) have succumb to it.

This game crashing and burning can only be good in the long run. It probably wont because it's easy moneyz. Which is too bad. :(
More burger in a bag.

Just watched the Quick Look on Giant Bomb. Didn't really look all that interesting to me and it doesn't evoke anything that I would consider to be "Syndicate".

I wonder if lukewarm reviews will effect sales.
It didn't with Homefront or Medal Of Honor, still sold millions. But those games looked like Call Of Duty. This games looks like Dues Ex with too much bloom, deph of field and a convoluted hud.

seeing that play from the pov of just the agent you send to do your dirty work only compared to when you were the CEO in the original game I can see why most people don't see the how their related. your playing in a more limited pov . that's all. and that's what throwing things off for those not seeing the similarity's.

I got a feeling that game is gonna be like how Amalur tuned out in sales or people will buy it on their own eventually. from what I'm seeing review wise. it's doing good so far. and I bet I'll only see one TV based /video game Review site give it a lowest of low scores.

and GT just gave it an 8. something

Like what happened with Amalur. (it was Xplay for the Amalur game) It might possible be Giant bomb for this one shooter. But it's possible the reviewer from GB might go a different direction with the score and give it a slight passing score . we won't know til he scores it.

Syndicate (PS3, X360) Syndicate gives you a great set of tools that make shooting at the world around you a lot of fun whether you're playing alone or with a team.

Ultimately, the new Syndicate is never going to please everyone. Swapping freedom and tactical depth for twitch-based thrills and teamwork has certainly made it a viable multi-platform release.

However, those with longer memories may argue that rebooting Syndicate as yet another FPS, complete with identikit hero, is a bit like remaking Citizen Kane as a rom-com starring Adam Sandler. For all its multiplayer merits, I'm afraid I'm with the Luddites on this one.

I think what needs to be done is what X-Com doing make another top base rts. and every one gets what they want.

I don't think it needs to be top down, at least in the restrictive sense. Back in the day they were stuck to a top down due to technoligy limitations as alot of the time they were just 2d sprites on tiles. If you look at something more modern like Total War or World In Conflict, you use a unrestriced camera that can practically go to any angle and to any height so you can zoom right in and see what is going on. It can be just as viceral and spectacular than anything in a FPS. I would argue Shogun 2 is, because it's all real time with no scripted trickery giving the illusion of scale.

For a game with smaller units counts I don't think it really needs to be that way. Although technically tactical shooters, Rainbow 6 and Brothers In Arms the over-head view for both games and with Rainbow 6 (the originals) you could plan everything to the point you wouldn't need any direct input. With Brothers In Arms it used twitch as well but it was more about supression and positioning, it's basically the exact same as Company Of Heroes.

Sometimes even a with a game using thousands of units, their is a hardcore setting in Shogun 2 that doesn't let you have the grand over-head view. You are religated to only focusing and seeing one units view at the time without the ability to zoom out for a over-head (or a mini-map) it makes the game signifcantly harder by taking the the player advantage away.

One of the problems with the over-head view is that the third dimension gameplay is rarely taking into account with strategy games even if the game is in 3d. At best it's usually higher ground = more damage/defense or air ships/anti-air. With the hardcore mod in Shogun 2, height gives you a better line of sight.. Which is irrelevant in the vanilla setting and practically every other game unless fog of war is used, which is usually a way of attemping to replicate 3d perspective on a 2d plane.

Didn't Homefront and Medal of Honor do bad in sales? The only reason those two games sold anything at all was because of how much money was just thrown at the marketing. I hear in California, you couldn't walk half a mile without some Homefront advertising punching you in the face.

Homefront (sadly) sold 2.6 million units. Medal Of Honor (sadly) sold 5 million copies, possibly even more.
I agree though, marketing. Gamers buy any pap shoved in their face enough, specifically console gaming as that is far more heavily marketed than pc gaming.

Just got a review copy from my website so I'll be reviewing the PS3 version of the game.

Have little memory or experience with the old Syndicate games, so I'll probably have to look up some info on the original.

ROTR's review will be tomorrow they stated some very intersting about it missing strategic elements of the original. With good reason since your playing as a low level agent(well thug/ hench men really), and not the CEO(as their calling the boss in the games) or the leader.

The youtube version of it some time (months) later.
