Can they reach that level of popularity again with kids today?
I doubt it. TMNT had the cartoon, comic books, action figures, the arcade games, and a live action movie, all in a short period of time. And for some kids who weren't quite old enough to have seen the Star Wars movies in a theater, this was our first real big franchise. I just can't imagine this ever becoming the pop cultural phenomenon the original was when it came out.
Speaking of which, I recently re-watched the original movie having not seen it since I first saw it as a kid, and....yeah. It's very much an obnoxious 90's kid's movie.
The movie was quite a pop culture event too. Can’t imagine a modern movie having that same impact where kids are going crazy for pizza lol.I doubt it. The franchise was doing fairly well throughout the 2000s. This is a generational franchise at this point. The 2014 movie made $191 million domestic and $485 million worldwide.
To put that in perspective the 2014 live-action movie made more than both Sonic the Hedgehog films did in 2020 and 2022.
The 2012 animated series ran for five seasons and 124 episodes. It was a success. The 2003 series ran for 7 seasons and 155 episodes. It was also a success.
It may not have reached the heights of the late 80s and early 90s, but the franchise has managed to withstand the test of time and remained in the public zeitgeist for decades now.

Though... that Splinter design. Holy hell that is horrendous.![]()
Looks like a mullet to me.At first I thought he had an afro, and they were going for some kind of blaxploitation look, but now I can't tell...

The animation looks solid, definitely inspired from Into The Spiderverse
Not 100% sold on the turtles themselves. They seem to act more like pre-teen kids than actual 16-18 year olds. Donnie especially sounds like he’s 8 years old.
