Animation Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Really digging the animation style and happy to see they’re trying to attract a younger audience.

I think actually having teens voice the Turtles this time is an interesting choice. I am going to want to see it.

I don't like the animation style though. I don't like it when the animation looks choppy.

Can they reach that level of popularity again with kids today?

I doubt it. TMNT had the cartoon, comic books, action figures, the arcade games, and a live action movie, all in a short period of time. And for some kids who weren't quite old enough to have seen the Star Wars movies in a theater, this was our first real big franchise. I just can't imagine this ever becoming the pop cultural phenomenon the original was when it came out.

Speaking of which, I recently re-watched the original movie having not seen it since I first saw it as a kid, and....yeah. It's very much an obnoxious 90's kid's movie.

The franchise was doing fairly well throughout the 2000s. This is a generational franchise at this point. The 2014 movie made $191 million domestic and $485 million worldwide.

To put that in perspective the 2014 live-action movie made more than both Sonic the Hedgehog films did in 2020 and 2022.

The 2012 animated series ran for five seasons and 124 episodes. It was a success. The 2003 series ran for 7 seasons and 155 episodes. It was also a success.

It may not have reached the heights of the late 80s and early 90s, but the franchise has managed to withstand the test of time and remained in the public zeitgeist for decades now.

The movie was quite a pop culture event too. Can’t imagine a modern movie having that same impact where kids are going crazy for pizza lol.

My one gripe with the animation style is it doesn't appear synchronized with the dialogue.

Don't forget the live tour.

The early '90s were something else.

First thoughts are that it's cute and I'm digging the animation style. Found it weird that they made April shaped like a turtle though, not sure if that was a deliberate choice or not.

Though... that Splinter design. Holy hell that is horrendous.

Definitely a fair point. It's almost remarkable how long lasting the TMNT have been. I guess the premise just works? You can put these characters into almost any era and have to change very little.

At first I thought he had an afro, and they were going for some kind of blaxploitation look, but now I can't tell...

The animation looks solid, definitely inspired from Into The Spiderverse

Not 100% sold on the turtles themselves. They seem to act more like pre-teen kids than actual 16-18 year olds. Donnie especially sounds like he’s 8 years old.

I'm really digging this. Is it a Mirage adaptation? No, but how fun it looks to me makes up for it at least a little bit. I love the way the turtles look and am weirded out by the way Splinter looks lmfao.

I get that the more overtly youthful direction they went isn't for everyone but it's definitely my thing. The 2007 movie was *my* introduction and even though I saw it in theaters, I was only 5 and that was 16 years ago so this is definitely a much-needed return for me.

Bay's films are mostly a bunch of doodoo feces so I'm not counting those.

Seeing how sketchy and cartoony the art style is for this film, maybe it’s sort of reflecting how unrefined these characters are because of them being teenagers and that’s how they sort of see the world. They aren’t done learning and growing, so the design of everything doesn’t look completely finished, like a teenager’s drawing,

Makes me wonder if as the actors and characters mature, the art style of the films becomes more “honed” an the tone of these films becomes more mature, due to them honing their craft and their perspective of the world deepens and widens.

I don’t mean that literally, obviously. I guess the closest example I can think of is the Harry Potter films. They started off more kid friendly, but as their audience got older, the films grew with them by becoming more mature and darker.

Maybe this film series will do the same, or maybe not. Would be cool if that happened, though. Just a thought.

Designs are pretty terrible, and some dumb casting in it. The fact Seth Rogan is behind this does not help.

I think ill pass.

I mean, they're sheltered kids. Their behavior, so far, seems to reflect that. And the actor that plays Donnie is 15.

Every adaptation of TMNT is different than the last and has its own takes on characters. Same with this film.

This film actually appears to be leaning more into the fact that they are basically kids and have been raised in the sewers their whole lives.
