The Acolyte from Leslye Headland

Either they have decided to continue the story in book form or are using them to fill in the gaps, so to speak.
I loved The Rise of Kylo Ren comic, which told far more of his story than the films did.

They are prequel books. One with Jecki and Yord, the other with Verne and Indara. And given the timing of them, they would have been commissioned before Acolyte premiered.

I still have to get around to watching but really? The Star Wars spinoff show starring a young black woman with other Asian and Latin actors in the supporting cast is the one to get the axe and not allowed a second season to fix whatever went down in its first year?

I look forward to seeing how Headland continues this show under a pseudonym on AO3 or Wattpad. It was fan fiction trash. The fact that anyone read those scripts and allowed them to be developed is miracle enough.

Absolute waste of Jacinto and Jung-jae's talent.

As the film in which this crappy fanfiction was based would say:

The show supposedly cost $180,000,000 so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.

I didn't watch it as I canceled D+ a long time ago.

What I don’t get about this show (and others in the SW universe) is that you already have a ton of books that you could base a movie or a series on. And some of them are really good. So why eschew all of that stuff in favor of something like this that has an average story, a meh mystery and so-so characters? And I don’t even think the show is as bad as some of you guys do. But I just wonder why this sort of thing always seems to happen. It reminds me a bit of the attempts to bring D&D to film. You had one HORRIBLE attempt in the early 2000s that felt nothing like the source material at all. Then you had the more recent movie, which was a lot of fun but I would argue wasn’t as good as the Drizzt or Dragonlance books from a story or character standpoint. And if the argument there was that the story they went with was more accessible to mainstream audiences… well, apparently not, because the movie flopped (even if it was generally well liked by people who saw it). Similarly, if the argument was that The Acolyte was more accessible than the material in the High Republic books, well… apparently the viewership didn’t reflect that.

That said, it pisses me off that this show got canned because I’m sure all the misogynists and racists are celebrating over this news. They’ve had a rough few weeks watching Kamala sell out stadiums while Turd’dib rants about Hannibal Lector and can’t even remember what state he’s in, so The Acolyte’s cancellation must feel like finding an oasis in the middle of the Sahara.

Hopefully Manny, Amandla and the rest of the cast keep getting a lot of work. They deserve better.

I never got around to watching the show, so can someone please explain in a non-biased manner what exactly the problem with it was acting or story-wise? On paper, reading the summaries online it seemed ok, so what went wrong?

Well, my understanding was that the Acolyte was meant to be like the culmination of the High Republic event, which introduced this pre-Phantom Menace period when the Republic and Jedi Order were at the height of their powers. High Republic started as a publishing event with the goal of other media spinoffs and such.

Since Disney bought Star Wars, their goal always seemed to be to make their own stuff and not simply remake the old pre-Disney EU material.

And frankly, the canonization of the old EU material was never that strong in the first place. Even Lucas himself ignored it when he saw fit. I like those old EU stories and characters, but Lucas never seemed to care much about it when he was creating the prequels or Clone Wars. Filoni would use some of that content, but he always put his own spin on it.

Well, I'm not non -biased , but after watching a few episodes, the show to me was ultimately subpar .

The acting wasn't the issue for me , but storywise , it was bland and at times, just dull, again , from my POV.

The only character I found interesting was Sol played Lee Jung-jae, but even his character wasn't enough for me to finish the series out.

If you haven't watched it yet , I highly recommend you watch Lee Jung-jae in something much better than the Acolyte, Squid Game .

It wasn't very good. I doubt very much it has anything to do with 'racists'.

And yet Ahsoka got a second season, and Rosario Dawson isn't exactly a white woman. Perhaps it has less to do with race and more with audiences showing up for Ahsoka and not for The Acolyte. Plus, Ahsoka admittedly had more of a draw than this show did. At the end of the day, numbers matter, and viewership falling off for The Acolyte would be a prime reason for Disney to dump the series.

Wait, I though Obi-Wan was a success?

From my understanding, it started with huge viewership and then began dropping off by big amounts (which is what happened to Acolyte as well but with far less viewership). So it wasn’t a disaster by any means but not enough for Disney to think a Season 2 would increase.

Welp, I guess I won't bother starting this series. And I still haven't finished Ahsoka...

IMHO Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn't need a second season and works far better as a miniseries. I think if you do more Kenobi you run the risk of creating more problems. I think it's difficult enough to have Kenobi going on an adventure with a young Leia.

They need someone calling the shots who actually knows television. With Andor being perhaps the lone exception, every live-action Star Wars series has felt like an assembly cut of a movie hacked into 6-8 parts. Pacing's a mess, editing's nonexistent. And that's not even getting into the material itself.

On top of that, they've not been able to nail down a story worth telling on the big-screen in over five years. It's STAR WARS and they can't figure out what to do with it.
