The Acolyte from Leslye Headland

... really? The Star Wars spinoff show starring a young black woman with other Asian and Latin actors in the supporting cast is the one to get the axe and not allowed a second season ....

Just watched a breakdown of the Star Wars series and it appeared that the Acolyte got the lowest ratings with even the season finale being one of the lowest. I get there were fans of this and maybe it's silly to expect a Mandalorian style viewership but shows are expensive and you can't cater to a smaller portion of a fandom.

Shame, I enjoyed the show myself but even I was shocked it cost what it did. They really need to keep these budgets down especially for shows with barely any recognisable characters.

I'd watch the eff out of a KOTOR or a Rogue Squadron show.

Rogue Squadron could be 4-5 seasons. KOTOR could be 2 season for the 1st game. Season 1 cliffhanger is when Revan takes off the mask.

I never got around to watching the show, so can someone please explain in a non-biased manner what exactly the problem with it was acting or story-wise? On paper, reading the summaries online it seemed ok, so what went wrong?
Pacing was odd. Flashbacks were mostly boring and the young actresses were not that great.

Well, I'm not non -biased , but after watching a few episodes, the show to me was ultimately subpar .

The acting wasn't the issue for me , but storywise , it was bland and at times, just dull, again , from my POV.

The only character I found interesting was Sol played Lee Jung-jae, but even his character wasn't enough for me to finish the series out.

If you haven't watched it yet , I highly recommend you watch Lee Jung-jae in something much better than the Acolyte, Squid Game .
So the writing just was't good? Shame. Why did they hire subpar writers for a concept like this?

Don't know .

I'm not sure of the process that went into it , but it was Leslye Headland's baby .

So you formed an opinion on the show without actually watching it?

Well, my understanding was that the Acolyte was meant to be like the culmination of the High Republic event, which introduced this pre-Phantom Menace period when the Republic and Jedi Order were at the height of their powers. High Republic started as a publishing event with the goal of other media spinoffs and such.

Since Disney bought Star Wars, their goal always seemed to be to make their own stuff and not simply remake the old pre-Disney EU material.

And frankly, the canonization of the old EU material was never that strong in the first place. Even Lucas himself ignored it when he saw fit. I like those old EU stories and characters, but Lucas never seemed to care much about it when he was creating the prequels or Clone Wars. Filoni would use some of that content, but he always put his own spin on it.

Just because it is set towards the end of the High Republic era in the timeline, it doesn't mean it is the culmination of Project Luminous, aka The High Republic publishing project. Even with one character from that showing up, it really has no connection to Project Luminous. Though, considering that Luminous authors are doing prequels to the Acolyte, I am fine with them also putting out whatever Headland's plan was.

Eclipse still needs to be cancelled though. **** David Cage touching this era.

And yet Ahsoka got a second season, and Rosario Dawson isn't exactly a white woman. Perhaps it has less to do with race and more with audiences showing up for Ahsoka and not for The Acolyte. Plus, Ahsoka admittedly had more of a draw than this show did. At the end of the day, numbers matter, and viewership falling off for The Acolyte would be a prime reason for Disney to dump the series.

Ahsoka is also Filoni's baby, who just recently got a promotion. Never underestimate personal bias in play when certain shows get renewed or cancelled. [stares hard at Netflix]

They need someone calling the shots who actually knows television. With Andor being perhaps the lone exception, every live-action Star Wars series has felt like an assembly cut of a movie hacked into 6-8 parts. Pacing's a mess, editing's nonexistent. And that's not even getting into the material itself.

On top of that, they've not been able to nail down a story worth telling on the big-screen in over five years. It's STAR WARS and they can't figure out what to do with it.

I mean, all the streamers have had the same issue. Gotta chase that prestige hit. And strongly disagree with your assessment of the Star Wars shows. Mando season 1 was perfectly episodic, which people complained about "filler". And Season 2 is a good season of television. Season 3 got screwed over when half of it was put into Book of Boba Fett.

Yes, its Star Wars. But, Star Wars has largely existed as books, comics, toys, video games for most of its 40 year history. Hell, cartoons have been bigger than live action shows for a lot of its history as well. One could maybe argue that, Star Wars may not be best as a live action show.

Frankly, needs to get over this 8 episode limit, let shows tell the story they need for as long as it needs, and work out a viable budget.

Mando and Andor have been successful as well and both leads are non white. I watched some of The Acolyte but I turned off after the 'power of two' episode....tried watching some more but gave up.

I haven't seen the show yet, was waiting until a season 2 then was gonna binge it. But guess I can watch it now. Are there any High Republic characters from the comics or books in the show? I thought I saw Burryaga in a trailer, not sure if it was though. I haven't read much from high republic but I know a couple characters.

Sigh. I had high hopes for this one but didn't even watch after the trailer. A shame all round, not least that this will count as a big win for the insufferable people.

Just hoping Andor does the impossible and sticks the landing.

Andor is a slow burn, but I get that not as many people watch because it doesn’t have lightsabers and Jedi. If Season 2 is 3/4 as good as Season 1, sign me up.

Apparently the views for this show were decent and then fell off after the third episode. So what happened in the third episode that turned people off?

Its a shame that the show doesnt return.
But between a broken toxic fandom, the Product budgets that for such shows get insane, and the fact that streaming services for a too tight 8 episode format that doesnt let anything room to breath and people to really get attached to...this was to be expected.

8-10 Huge budget episodes for a season and expecting GOT season 1 numbers...is a death blow to everything.
Such a concept just puts too much pressure on everything and you just dont have enough time to let plots, character and world breath enough
12 episodes should be the norm if anything.
And as usual with everything Hollywood, lower the god damn budget.
The higher the budget, the more pressure is on everything...that is not good.

Streaming was meant to fix the TV problems, yet it brought even worse problems.
8-10 Episodes with insane budgets that they demand to set new viewer records, then forcing viewers to wait 3-4 years for a show, just to end them at best after 4 seasons...is not a good way to do shows.

I think Disney will take the wrong lesson from this and just double down on the Empire/First Order timeline. For this, it wasn’t the era or characters; it was the terrible writing, pacing, and astronomically high budget. Qimir will now be a wasted character with no fitting conclusion and the Plagueis tease is the most frustrating because it’s a character that deserves more exploration.

They had a good idea but they went the wrong way about it.

Man, usually.these type of cancelations are pretty quiet. Disney is throwing this all the way under the bus, lol!!!! I still haven't watched it and I probably am not going to anytime soon. In general, not just Star Wars but Marvel as well, it feels like Disney has no idea how to Disney+ live action. They have produced gems, but they mostly just end up being overly long movies with similar issues but varying degrees of severity. They need to take the entire Disney+ original line of thought back to formula

But see this was the opposite. They had too much time and not using it properly. That’s why people were saying this would’ve been a better movie than a series. Same with Obi-Wan.

And if a movie can get you attached to characters in 2-3 hours time, there’s absolutely no reason a series can’t with 8 hours.
