The Acolyte from Leslye Headland

These days?

It’s certainly gotten worse, but remember back in 1999 when fans were ruthless to an 8 year old boy and an up-and-coming stage actor playing a CGI character. Remember in 2002, when fans were ruthless to a young up-and-coming Canadian actor doing his first big movie.

Fandom has always been pretty awful.
Sadly that’s true. I guess everything is just so much more pronounced now. Back then you had to a send a letter to make a complaint to a studio or a magazine, now you can make content online and even profit off of the hatred.

From what I've observed, in these types of issues, especially with ships, no side is truly innocent. Ship what you want, whatever. But do understand that criticism will come when you are advocating for the Star Wars equivalent of Harley/Joker.
Um....I always saw it as Beauty and the Beast myself!

I'd love to know if 'shippers' of Qimir and Osha have got the same grief. And if anyone has pointed out that Mother Aniseya did far worse to that Jedi youngling than Kylo did to Rey in TFA.

So did everyone forget that when this show started Leslye was saying in interviews that it was only planned for one season and she didn't like the idea of leaving dangling plots. Everything was going to be wrapped up. (I'm sure you can find it on google)

Then by the end of the season she was talking about all the plans they made for season 2. So she just straight up lied to us to get us watching.

Judging by the viewership numbers, it didn't work.

Hmmm.....maybe she should go into politics!

Seriously, this appears to be off topic but bear with me. Like The Acolyte the recent horror film Longlegs got lots of very different reactions from fans and influencers on youtube. Some loved it, some hated it.

But the film went on to be a big success at the box office. Negative reviews (and quite a few insults) online didn't stop this. The Acolyte's viewing figures went steadily downhill. This is why it was cancelled. At the end of the day Disney aren't going to waste a fortune on something people have stopped watching.

It's still half the truth though. The budget always goes on par with popularity. If the series was watched and liked enough it would continue regardless.

Unfortunately that's fair.

Curtesy of Luminate we've gotten some additional insights into Acolyte viewership.
"The Acolyte was really the first one that I think you would say is legitimately poor performance comparative to the other Star Wars shows," Doyle notes. He points out that viewership was 47% lower than Ahsoka in the first 26 weeks of release.

Which comes alongside official confirmations that the show had a $230.1M budget instead of the previously reported $180M. Compare that to Ahsoka which is still reported to be at $100M instead.

Despite some of my problems with the show, I genuinely wanted it to be renewed, but with those kinda numbers you just can't justify it.

I think Disney needs to move away from doing expensive Disney Plus shows and figure out how to make Star Wars a big movie event again. If you are going to spend $280 million on something, spend it on something that could gross billions of dollars worldwide with a massive worldwide audience. If you insist on keeping Star Wars on TV for your streaming service, cut the budgets.

Andor reportedly cost $645 million for two seasons.
Absolutely. Which is why they reduced it from a planned five seasons to two. Its viewership was higher than Acolyte though and steadily increased. Plus, it has a great critical reception and four more episodes per season.

If it had performed on par with The Acolyte, it wouldn't have gotten a second season either.

My recollection is the second season was already ordered before it debuted.

Down from five planned seasons to three and eventually two. The second season was also filmed with a crew about a third the size of season one. Plus, they got a $129.3M reimbursement for filming in the UK. Taking down costs to $515.7M. As a result, it didn't go over budget unlike Acolyte.

Now, I probably should've clarified I meant performing in the broadest sense. Not just viewership. Budget obviously played a role in the decision to reduce the amount of seasons for Andor, but audience engagement, demand, and LF's own faith in the project also kept it alive.

Andor was performing well in these metrics, whereas Acolyte stumbled out of the gate. Again, that brings me absolutely no joy. I wanted Acolyte to work. Star Wars needs new eras of storytelling. I've enjoyed the High Republic books and comics I've read. Yet, I also have to be realistic.

There was no way they could ever fit five seasons of story into Andor.

They started recording Andor season 2 even before Andor season 1 release in Disney+ ended. That means they had already spend a good amount of money on Andor season 2 even before they know the numbers for Andor season 1.

Andor was created when Disney has a lot of expectatives on streaming. That's why they took that kind of risks. That wouldn't happen anymore.

Yeah true, that's a big part of it too. The bar is higher now.
