That isn't really where they spend their money when it comes to marketing. Not the bulk of it. All those signs you see out in the wild, the avalanche of tv spots, spending out the stars for events. That is what cost the big money.

I guess.
As an aside, how many of the general audience who saw SM3 and violently rejected that movie then saw posters of 3 villians and trailers of 3 villians bringing back (bad) memories of SM3 turned them off to ASM2 right out the gate? I'm guessing more than a couple.

Terrible marketing.

TDK
Scarecrow
2 Face
Joker

What was marketed? Batman, Joker, Harvey, Gordonn.

The problem I have with this theory, is we are assuming that Electro was a character that was going to draw the audience to the theater. He isn't the Joker. And well, a lot of the best shots in the trailer are tied to Rhino and the Goblin. You know, the stuff that got everyone hyped here?

one thing I find interesting about the marketing is I fell like it used to be that when movies where like month or 2 form coming out that I would see previews on tv all the time and I fell like the last few years I don't see previews on tv has much has I used to. But with this movie I have been seeing previews all the time.

I'm not talking about drawing new people to the movie I'm talking about not turning away existing members of the GA.

Sony should take heart that Bond bounced back from the critical and commercial disappointment of QoS to the critical and commercial success of Skyfall, with the same principle leads, but a different director, writer (I think) and cinematographer. So major turn arounds can happen.

Absolutely. While Spidey is far from my favorite hero I want him to be tops. I respect his place in comicbook history and want him to get the best possible treatment in a cbm. I feel he's lost some of his luster under Webb but I know he can get it back. He is Marvel comics flagship character and I'd like him to be treated as such.

while I really don't see this movie making less then 800. The first one made 762 and that was going agest dark knight rises and advengers and being a reboot and I belive the first movie won some people back and there was that shooting that happened and after people went to the movies a little less for like a week or to. With all of those things I don't think 38 million more is to much to ask for.

advengers, really?

Agreed but people like Sam Mendes, John Logan and Roger Deakins must have honest interest in the material so could be hard to find them. And also they have to trust them.

To be honest though, does anyone here expect Sony to change their ways? They did similar things with the first film that they're doing here. It's obvious they want this film to be a billion dollar mega hit, but I don't see that happening.

I think Sony has dug themselves a nice little hole, especially if the movie under performs at the box office.

Expect the tone to be different once again in the third film if this movie doesn't make the money that Sony wants.

Sad that this series has thus far become this big trial and error type deal. I just hope the people who did enjoy this movie won't start getting so defensive for the next one if people say they don't really care to see it, or think it'll likely be mediocre.

For the third movie, I have a suggestion.... let Marc Webb do whatever he wants, Sony should not interfere at all.

The result will be lot better movie.

Sony's (and MGM's) Bond franchise bounced back after Quantum of Solace movie, the third Bond movie (Skyfall) broke all records and made more then 1 bil.

So, third TASM 3 could prove to be the best movie of franchise, provided that Sony gives Marc Webb all the freedom he needs.

Webb is not Mendes. So far he made one great indie rom-com and two average comic book adaptations. And if characters like Max Dillon or Aleksei Sytsevich are from his head then... I'd fire him immediately.

I hope this ends up doing a bit better than TASM, the movie is so, so good.

I mean, hell The Kangaroo might as well had shown up at some point and jack kicked Spidey in the nads. That would've been entertaining lol more so than the final Electro fight scene, that's for sure. I hope Dillion and Rhino weren't Webb's decision, because if so I can't even imagine what his interpretation of Mysterio would be like.

I feel that Webb likes character driven stories, the action needs to be added as this is a comic book movie.

He can make a great movie, if he wants to.

I concur. Sam Mendes has made several great films. Webb was a new talent even when he came onto this series, and so far, he's not shown me he can do a great Spider-Man film for a full film. He has flashes where he brings out that greatness, but he can't sustain it.

I disagree that ASM2 is average.

The third movie in this particular franchise might not be TASM3, though. There's a rumor that Sinister Six films early next year, which would put that before TASM3. Based on reception to the villains and setup in the current film, I could see Sinister Six under performing. TASM3 may have a tough time bouncing back, especially since it would likely come out a mere year after SS. Sony's annual Spidey film plan may have been a poor decision.

Sony is not going to green light any Venom or Sinister Six movie with a marginal ASM2 return. In fact, ASM 3 will simply have Venom as a main character and anti-hero if they want to do split screen time with Spiderman, but he's not going to get his own spinoff if Sony pulls in ASM 1 type numbers again. Sinister Six would simply be ASM 4. Those spinoffs would have no chance to profit without Spiderman involved.

Even if the movie flopped at the BO (and it wont) it would make it's money back eventually with TV syndication.

Which is so not what you expect or accept when you spend that kind of money on a film.
