That is not how it works. A $650 million movie is not a big hit when it's budget (with marketing) is well over half of that total, especially with Sony no longer having merchandise rights. As for their investors not trying to get Sony to sell the franchise, it's worth noting that Sony has been selling a fair amount of their stuff lately. They've recently sold their PC business, as well as some stock that they held in Square Enix. Some time ago, they sold two of their buildings. They are in sell mode.

How many Sony franchises make over 650 m?

You don't dump a franchise when it grosses more than all of your other franchises (other than Bond).

It's not about gross, it's about profit.

Sony doesn't really have Bond. They just distribute it.

The elephant in the room is that Avi Arad should not be allowed around these properties anymore. I think he was good for these films in the beginning, but after a while he was a hindrance. He was all but shut out of the Iron Man production save the casting of Terrance Howard. After being fired from Marvel Studios, he had connections at Sony to stay on with Spider-man, but he's one of the big reasons for the problems with Spider-man 3.

Its not the elephant in the room
Avi also rejected a script for SM2 which had like 3 villlains and black cat before the doc ock script came along, if not for him we wouldn't have been blessed with SM2

As for SM3 he wanted the symbiote in the movie, and it isn't unusal for producers to make requests, it was Raimi's fault of he didn't understand the character, wasn't Nolan requested to have Rachel in BB when he wanted Harvey Dent and didn't Whedon want someone else instead of black widow initially?

Did they shut show and hide behind the excuse that they didn't understand the chatacter?
Its the directors duty to understand the characters in the script and if they cannot then they should step down

We must face the truth here, fact is Marc Webb made a mediocre movie which hasn't been received well and he and the writers are at fault here and not Avi Arad

It would've been plenty profitable if they didn't go kamikaze on the marketing budget.

Or sell their merchandise rights to Marvel for Spider-Man.

Sony made a lot of mistakes with this movie.

I 80% agree with you. Marc Webb and the writers deserve a lot of the blame for the flack this movie is getting. But, I don't agree Avi doesn't deserve blame. He does, also. There is plenty of blame to go around.

I would blame both Avi Arad and Marc Webb. However, if TASM2 makes bank people at Sony would just pretend that there's nothing wrong with the movie, and will continue to make mistakes in the next sequel and the spin-offs.

Keeping Marc Webb proves nothing will change. We have seen his short comings as a director with this property. If people magically think the pacing issues and villains will get better in his 3rd try, I think that is a pipe dream.

I blame the writing. Most positive and negative reviews complain about script issues.

Marc Webb obviously deserves some blame but he can only do so much with a poorly written script.

Well I was off on my BO predictions because I didn't think this film would be a stinker. How can you make a worse film than ASM1? Well, they did it. WOM is going to hurt this movie and Godzilla is going to step all over the tiny bug while the X-Men lay the finishing blow.

If the movie cost $450 million, this will not make a profit PERIOD. Sony execs were hoping for $1 billion and that ain't happening. I won't be surprised if this comes at or under ASM1's total box office WW. All now I can hope for is Sony loses their pants on this and sells off their film division. PLEASE HAPPENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
What if they sell off their film division to Fox?

A poorly written script that he was involved with crafting since this film's inception. It isn't like we got a new director this film. He stayed and had more time to develop it than a new director did.

I doubt Spider-Man movie rights will move even if Sony sells its film division to Fox, because they don't own the rights, but merely leasing the rights from Marvel.

Exactly.

Avi is an executive producer, he deserves blame. Where did I ever say that Mark Webb and the writers don't deserve blame? Of course they deserve blame but making a film is a group project, and Avi Arad was a part of that process.

I also said that at one time Avi was good for Marvel. If not for him, there wouldn't be a Marvel Studios, but this is a guy who didn't want Robert Downey Jr. to play Iron Man and forced Terrance Howard. He just isn't a good exec anymore.

Arad forced Howard out?
I did not know he was responsible for that .

Sony says they expected 1 billion.

Will earning 700 m change their plans for ASM3, Venom and S6?

I still don't think they will dump the franchise completely but their plans will most like get an overhaul.

I don't think they will let Spidey go just yet. But, the spin-offs might be delayed until after they see how TASM3 does. I think those might not be guaranteed anymore if this does the same as TASM.

I think both Venom and Sinister Six will bomb if Spidey won't be in them.

If this badly underperforms and that results in killing off the Venom spinoff, then I say mission accomplished.

I don't understand Sony's thought process on trying to make a Spider-man universe. Part of him being a solo character means that the focus should be on him most of the time. I don't want to see a feature length movie that stars Doc Ock and not Spider-man, even though Doc Ock is my favorite Spider-man baddie.

I think the Venom spin-off can work and could even be good. It is the Sinister Six spin-off that has me shaking my head.

They also provide some financing for Bond as well. Out of the $1 billion Skyfall got in theaters, Sony got 25% of it for financing the picture.

Right. But far from the approximately 50% they would normally get for a film they owned outright.

And the DVD rights belong to FOX.
