Imagine if it made 200m in China, obviously that won't happen, but let's just entertain the possibility for a second. Would be crazy, and I'd love to see the reactions on the box office board people link to

I'm more interesting in second week showings as that will show if ASM2 has legs.

Spidey needs China to have BIG numbers.

It's doing huge in Asia (aside from Japan) right now, this + China (it will do more than 48 million this time, it's not facing TDKR), this could help make up for some of the other drops and bring it over 800 M WW, GO SPIDEY !

Spidey has always been bigger in Europe and Asia than America for some reason.

Well, it wasn't allways completelly the case. Spider-Man 1 has sold the most tickets in the past 30 years or so in the USA, if it had been like that in the entire world, that film would have broken Titanic.

The poor reception is going to hurt the next film tremendously regardless of what China does.

That doesn't have to be the case as there have been movies that have panned and still gone on to be big hits. Most notably, Transformers 2.

I doubt it, see the Transformers movies? Yeah, I rest my case........

I don't think Spiderman fans should worry about this film's profitability. While I do believe RT and critics affect CBM BO (looking at you GL), ASM2 should easily grasp 700m WW. That said, I do see a plunge in it's state side OW. Definitely lower than MOS, Thor 2, Cap 2, but probably better than ASM1.

But doesn't Sony need at least $750 million to break even?

Anything below that and they are losing money.

It's tracking at 95-100 M OW right now, it's gonna do just fine. Asia will help it tremendously.

transformers 3 got 36% on rotten tomatoes, 87% fresh, 157% rotten and made $1,123,794,079

i believe there is still room for surprise

I think Sony would snatch your arm off if offered 800m right now.

It's a sad day to this Spider-Man fangirl when people are comparing the Spider-Man franchise to Transformers in any way.

Transformers is a different beast though? It offers a kind of spectacle that i don't think the new Spidey films have delivered all that well, and the Army's role in those films along with some of their gadgets makes many army related fan boys love it

Hard to say without really" knowing". It's possible that's the case and the figure they're looking for, but with merchandise thrown in, this film should see a nice profit.

Breaking even at 750 million, though, would mean the movie was that expensive which I doubt.

you can compare spider-man to transformers doesn't mean you are comparing the films, just the popularity or nostalgic factor maybe

My call is comparable numbers to Thor 2 & Cap 2. Leaning toward slightly below that (but only slightly; 85-90m).

The film alone was not, but they spent almost as much on Marketing as they did on the movie itself.

Sony sold off the merchandise rights so that gives them no relief.

Reportedly, the budget for the movie was $225 million and the marketing was $190 million.

But almost certainly made that money back through TV syndication.
