Warner Bros doesn't have much advantage over Sony.

The only mega-franchises Warner Bros really has is The Hobbit and Justice League related stuff.

Sony has James Bond and Spider-man.

Disney is on another level with POTC, Avengers, Iron Man, Cap, Star Wars, Pixar, and Alice in Wonderland.

Sony shares James Bond with MGM though so I don't know how much profit they get from that. How much would TASM2 have to earn in order to be considered a failure for sony?

WB also has Harry Potter, a strong relationship with Nolan, upcoming American Godzilla movies (This one looks like it's going to make a lot of money), Lego movie, Superman, Batman and DC crossovers are 3 distinct things that are going to bring them millions, if not billions, Lego Movie, and a strong franchise for the horror cinema goers with The Conjuring.

Not to mention other assets they oun, while Disney has an advantage for the upcoming years, last year WB still was the highest grossing studio .

That new Godzilla trailer that just came out there other day... Just wow!

"Let them fight..."

Harry Potter's gonna live on through that new "Fantastic beasts" movie, which I have a feeling is gonna be pretty gigantic too.

All the franchises I mentioned last made over 700 million.

The Harry Potter spin offs and Lego haven't reached those heights yet. DC universe has potential financially but WB has fumbled the ball before with Green Lantern. We can't count our chickens too soon. Horror movies are profitable but not nearly as much a billion dollar franchises.

I'll give you Godzilla though. That has a decent chance at 600+ m.

And Warner Bros is the highest grossing studio because they release twice as many movies as Disney. But I'm sure during most years Disney has a higher average gross per movie.

Sony lost a lot of money on huge movies like White House Down or After Earth. However their smaller projects are very successful. Still... every studio needs franchises.

Why doesn't sony try to do something big with Men in Black? The last movie made over $600 million worldwide.

MIB 3 was $10 I'll never get back for something I only enjoyed the ending to...

I thought MIB3 was actually pretty enjoyable. Not film of the year or anything but I think if Sony wanted to continue with the series then they could have another big franchise on their hands. That way they aren't completely dependent on Spider-Man to bring in the money.

The Amazing Spider-Man 22 Jump Street.

That'd be a sick cross over. It's too bad the first one didn't make as much as it should have, movie was hilarious.

Lord & Miller would save this franchise.

If the series continues and sony puts out one film per year as planned, I think each movie is going to make less and less profit at the box office (unless the Sinister Six film really kicks off).

Sony have also franshises Men in Black, Underworld, Resident Evil trough Screen Games which they own and every one of this movies made money. Underworld is maybe dead franshise, but Resident Evil is billion dollar one and makes money trough his 6th installment, even when recent movies are bad. Dont forget they have now in 22 Jump Street new money incoming. Previous movie with 40 million dollar budget earned 5x times more on box office and now sequel is coming up in which Sony own rights.

Also am sure they have in plan if Warcraft movie be success doing Uncharted franshise. Modern Indiana Jones adventure movies.

Sony is working on scripts for Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid, correct? I see a lot of potential there for good box office revenue.

It reminds me of a sports franchise that holds onto a future HoFer for too long. The best teams trade the veteran before his market value drops, and invest in the future.

Although people say that Spider-Man will never be in the MCU, I don't think that's actually true. At some point or another, Sony will find that Spider-Man is no longer profitable enough to suit them (TASM2 might be the lowest grossing Spider-Man film to date) and they could be forced to give the rights back to Marvel. Or maybe they can at least, y'know, cut down on marketing? They spent nearly too much money on TASM2's advertising.

Resident Evil is only distributed be Sony, the same way Disney and Fox distribute Dreamworks movies, so I Imagine they only took less than 15% of those films' gross

Sony will never give up on Spiderman franchise. Why because every movie they release will make them money, maybe not money they think they deserve but money they need right now. :hehe:

I dont see Spider-man bomb in box-office and under this mean not earn money at least not same as original budget. Spider-man is too big to be Lone Ranger or John Carter

Deadline reported that the movies budget was $255Mil and the Marketing was $190mil. This film would probably have to match SM3's gross to even start to be profitable that's why Sony is aiming for a billion, also this time Sony don't have merchandise sales to help them.

I'm not saying the movies would flop, but Sony is highly dependent on this franchise and needs these films to hit the billion mark. I think it's inevitable that at some point, may it be 5 years or 10, that Spider-Man will go back to Disney. I'm not one of those "GIVE THE RIGHTS TO MARVEL" fanboys, not at all. I wish for Spider-Man to succeed with Sony. But if things continue to decline then it is going to happen at some point or another. Sony is hanging by a thread.

You have to be kidding me. $445 million in total is too much to spend on this one movie. They could have held back in marketing and not only saved money, but, y'know, avoided spoiling so much of it!

I know right? They could have refrained from showing most of the major sequences in the movie. You know, have the goblin as a surprise. And maybe, they could have spent some of that 190 million into an action scene.

Okay, so in order for sony to really make a profit, TASM2 has to earn about $890 million WW. Not going to happen.

I think selling the merchandising rights back to Disney was the point of no return. Sony's restricted in a way Marvel wouldn't be. Spider-Man was an investment that they profited greatly from. There is no shame in selling the property back. After all, the only reason Marvel Studios exist is because they sold the movie rights when they were in bankruptcy.

Marvel could actually turn an MCU Spider-Man movie into an event. My family has no idea who the hell "the twins" were. Can you imagine how the general audience would have marked out if there was a kid walking on the ceiling or a scene where a crook was webbed to a streetlight? Marvel wouldn't put out a Spider-Man related movie every year. His movies should be The Avengers of solo movies.
