you know when i heard the sinister six was gonna be made i always thought it would have the chance to be cancelled. i still do think that to this day but if it weren't then please tell me how would the story even be told?

I really do hope Sony pushing back TASM3 turns out to be true, I liked TASM2 but it was a mess, and a BIG improvement is needed for the next movie to bring audiences back in. They should take their time an get things right before going into production.

The production for the 1st 2 movies were a bit of a mess and I think it showed in both movies, more so for TASM2, this simply cant happen again in my eyes.

Some of them could be introed earlier. Plus they would have to be goons to an extent rather than have hugely varying individual motivations if not introed earlier. And I think Spidey would have Black Cat and Osborn on his side. I think it's very hard to get right but not impossible in the right hands. Don't think Sony should go anywhere near it for now though, would have been a possibility if we'd had say 4 or 5 films all with the reception of SM1 & 2.

I think they have to or they will just continue digging. They need a real reevaluation of future projects and how to make them work.

Agreed, TASM 2 was a mess and people voted with their pockets, its certainly not a disaster but its a situation that needs addressing.

I think if you're doing a Sinster Six plot it has to be fleshed out in 4 or 5 films. It seems like they're trying to push it into a few. The first film could have introduced Otto Octavius and/or Adrian Toomes in small but relevant roles. The second film the same.

Like someone said in another thread. Sony's situation is basically a win-win for us fans. They either pull something out of their ass and nail it, or they royally screw up and might sell the rights away.

Robocop flatlined so there's that. It made $58 million domestic. It made $250 million WW on a $100 million budget not counting marketing. Why do some of you ignore costs?

How about that Robocop 2 announcement? Oh yeah there isn't one.

My point was that Robocop made no money so Sony 'may' see a movie that makes 4-5 hundred million WW (that doesn't have an A list character or characters with brand recognition) as a success.

Also again with Robocop, the movie cost a 100m and was filled with effects and had 2 named actors (Oldman/Keaton).

Even if they postpone ASM3 to 2017, it is highly likely that it will be sandwiched between an MCU movie and the planned Justice League film. No matter what way we look at it, the next one is guaranteed to make significantly less than ASM2 domestically (even 140 mill can be expected). If the overseas market makes up for its domestic shortcomings, it stil cannot gross more than 625-650 mill. I think that ASM3 may be the First Class of the Spider-Man franchise box office wise.

Flat out speculation.

It actually is lol. I am just getting bored and I am trying to lower my expectations for ASM3. ASM2 was the one movie which actually surpassed my expectations (they were pretty high btw). I do not want to set myself up for a fall with ASM3.

Personally speaking I loved the movie but even I admit Sony have to take a step back let the dust settle with the ASM movies. Formulate a plan and stick to it. Have a clear vision and only shoot what you need. ASM 3 may need to get back to basics. One plot line, one villain. If S6 is a success then make them cross over in ASM 4.

When all is said and done ASM2 was a disappointment rather than a disaster and the situation with careful planning can be salvaged. This will ensure Sony tread carefully and plan wisely rather than fling things at the wall to see what sticks. There are several franchises that have recovered from far worse positions.

I think if it releases in other countries for two weeks like it did this time, and the WOM is amazing (let's not hold back and say it's 100% after 60 reviews), then I can see the film making more than TASM2.

I don't think reviews make nearly the impact some people think they do.

The film should not be released in advance. For one, a low quality bootleg of the ASM2 released before the film actually opened domestically. Plus, it would be better if the reviews came all at once. The slow trickle of foreign reviews may have affected the overall critical reception in the US as well. They might have gone into the movie with their own preconceived notions of how it will turn out.

World wide releases reduce the amount of pirating. The stars only get to promote the movie on one continent but I doubt Garfield turning up in person has any bearing on the BO of that country one way or the other.

I hope they go for a worldwide release for ASM3. If they play their cards right and do some advertising for products like DOFP did, they can recover some of the money from their budget before the movie even hits theatres. ASM2 had the Evan commercial but ASM3 should get two or more products advertised too. That way they can spring for a bigger budget on the film itself (250-275 mill) and recover its marketing costs with an effective advertising plan. By doing this, they can be assured of the movie breaking even at least.

* pull back on some of the marketing (no Super Bowl trailer for instance).
* shot what you need, don't film excess that ends up on the cutting room floor (Film is ridiculously expensive).
* negotiate better tax breaks for filming in NY.
* use more locations rather than film sets that must cost a fortune to construct.
* use more practical effects than CG. Attempt to do the effect 'in camera'.

I think they can reign in the budget for ASM3 to 200m.
S6 should be done on shoe string because I don't think that movie will make a BO return that justifies a huge budget. Concentrate on performances not effects, limit the effects to 3 set pieces beginning, middle and end.

Interesting article.
On another note, what if Sony releases the movie in the fall of 2017? That would give Webb and co. enough time to focus on it. Plus, it will have the added advantage of letting the dust settle on the planned Justice League film.

Late 2017 could be interesting, plenty of movies make money, the only problem would be possibly going up against another MCU movie or one of the Avatar sequels.

with how much money they made and how the reviews are giving this movie sony must make their movie good. with what they did with both movies they really need to follow on what marvel is doing or just listen to what we say

Bring. In. The. Symbiote...

Some movies are 'critic proof' and other movies will bomb regardless of how highly it is praised.

I'm curious which blockbuster or summer tent pole movies bombed that were highly praised?
