The reason I cannot and will not participate in a raimi vs Webb debate is well....I can't say anything bad about Raimi. I grew up with his films; I watched them so many times that it's hard to care about their flaws, if there are any.
I mean, no-one can call SM1 generic, can they? Because if it were generic, then that claim would be based on the premise that thousands of CBMs woulda come before it. SM1 redefined our expectations of CBMs and changed everyone's perception of the whole genre from being too "kiddish" to actually being a viable investment.
After SM1, directors tried their hand at CBMs, most of which were not financially successful. (With the exception of X2, hellboy, and a few others) Then came SM2, the first superhero film(if I am correct) to win a vfx Oscar. And rightly so. Most, if not all, of its effects hold up today. And SM2 is not only revered because of its effects and Doc Ock. It's still considered by many to be one of the CBMs ever made because of one simple thing: it's intimate storyline. Peter Parker is fundamentally an Everyman. And a movie that can capture his daily struggles without being boring deserves to be admired and appreciated for generations to come.
So, what I am trying to say is this: I can't compare the two directors simply because it's apples vs oranges for me. The Raimi films---I grew up with em. I can't really say anything bad about em. The Webb films--they represent another part of my life; a different one.
So well, that's my opinion on the whole thing.
