Homecoming The Amazing Spider-Man 3 General Discussion - Part 9

I don't get it. Why is Venom considered by some to be Spider-Man's greatest enemy? He looks cool and has cool powers but there are villains who are so much better.

Venom is not even a contender for Spider-Man's greatest enemy. He has done nothing to Peter that measures up to half of what Goblin and Ock have done to him. Even knowing Spider-Man's identity (which was handed to him by the symbiote. He never learned it for himself through cunning and intelligence) what has he ever achieved with that knowledge? Scared MJ once? Stalked Spider-Man over and over? That constitutes a greatest enemy?

Venom is a classic example of style over substance. Take away the cool look and rip off Spidey powers and he's nothing. His reason for hating Spider-Man is one of the worst pieces of character writing ever.

Back in Amazing Spider-Man 8 Peter took the opportunity to knock Flash out in a boxing match.

If movie peter did that it sounds like some people would be calling him a cocky jerk and a bully.

Not if it was done the way it was done in ASM #8.

In that story Flash smashes Peter's glasses, and then challenged Peter to that fight. The gym teacher even agreed to be referee for it. So it wasn't some bully fight on the sly. Or something Peter orchestrated to make Flash look like a tool. Peter accepted, and even made a mental note to pull his punches so he doesn't seriously hurt Flash. The way Peter hits him in that panel was not intentional either. This was in the Living Brain story when it went nuts in the school.

All through the fight Peter had been dodging Flash's blows while trying to figure out how to hit Flash "without splattering him all over the gym". He plans to just flip his wrist instead of swinging with his whole arm. He even warns Flash in advance, telling him, "Here it comes", but, as luck would have it, somebody enters the gym at that moment yelling "Help! The Brain is out of control! Help!" and Flash turns his head to look at the yeller. Pete has already started his blow and can't stop in time.

That's a Peter Parker who is likable and can be respected. Not Garfield's and how he handled Flash.

And welcome to another edition of 'My favourite villain is better than yours'. :o

It's hard to imagine it in live action, but it could work. I found this realisticly detailed fan art that actually makes the classic design look pretty intimidating

Marvel-&

What about some sort of CA:WS Falcon takeoff version?

The feathered pyjamas look just isn't going to cut it on film. Maybe for something like Spider-man the musical.

The problem with a metal winged vulture is they would risk it looking too similar to Falcon from the movies, and it may be too soon to release 2 very similar styled characters. So, if they were going the metal winged route it might be better to wait a little while to make him seem a little less like a copy of Falcon.

John Malkovich disagrees.

Yeah, SWH said that they're legit, had one for TASM2 as well.

Some media outlet would have debunked it by now if it wasn't at least slightly legitimate
Bill Beckman didn't have any ASM2 casting calls. The agency in charge of ASM2 was Grant Wilfley Casting.

Nah son. Doc ock and gg are mad at spiderman for what? Foiling there world domination plans? Venom got his life ruined and became obsessed with hunting Peter down. Ah and yes the fact that venom has all of spidermans abilities and more is a great example as to why he is a great villian. He's the venom to spiderman and weakens him. Made him fear for his life and loved ones more than anything. I don't get why people hate him just cuz he was conceived in the 90s when everything was "cool" he was a great villian that's it it has nothing to do with what era he came from. But I guess being from the golden age means that your better. Ah well. I like venom cause he's messed with Spider-Man's head. The 90s show did a great job of showing how he affected spiders life. Doc ock and gg are amazing villians but they never made spidey afraid or run away.

Word. Muh boy Venom gets too much hate. He's essentially an evil version of Spider-man and evil counterparts are always relevant. Not to mention he's scary as f. Remember this scene?

Venom to all the haters: "They hate us cause they ain't us"

I prefer venom as an anti-hero rather than an antagonist tbh. His stories are very punisher-esque (there was a really cool team-up between the two in the 90s venom solo series)

I will say the recent Venom series with Flash Thompson as Venom was amazing. I loved it, Flash as Venom is perfect and I wouldn't mind not seeing Eddie Brock as Venom ever again. I think Venom works much better as a standalone antihero than a villain to Spidey.

Just going to leave this here. Some rough ideas of what I think Marvel's Spider-Man trilogy could consist of. Plot holes and logic galore... Just something I whipped up at work. Let me know what you guys think, I'd love for the universe to play out somewhat in this fashion...

Marvel's Spider-Man
Mysterio as main villain. Two battles.
Flint Marco as street thug. Relationship established for getting caught all the time. (TSSM style) Humor potential.
Eddie Brock as Peter's older childhood friend. Someone Peter looks up to.
Herman Schultz hired as a hitman by the Kingpin to get rid of Spider-Man. Spidey defeats with ease.
Peter works for Doctor Connors and Otto Octavius as an intern with Eddie at Oscorp. Shares a good working relationship with Otto and Curt, they both see potential in Peter.
Kingpin is pulling strings in background with more villains. Sent Flint and other street thugs to take care of Spider-Man. Montage scene of cleaning up the streets.
Spidey saves the day at a movie set that Beck set up with real explosives for more (practical effects).
Beck gets broken out of jail by the Kingpin. Gives Beck the money and resources he needs to eliminate Spider-Man for good.
First battle in a theatre, enter massive CGI with Beck’s new tech. Fight breaks out into the streets of NYC.
Peter works for the DB… Only gets the job because Jonah is too cheap to hire a professional photographer for his son’s upcoming party for going to space.
Herman is given the “Shocker” suit, funded by the Kingpin, to crash J.J’s party in hopes the Spider-Man would show up for round two.
Fighting scene during the party at the Daily Bugle. J.J screaming his head off at the two during the battle throwing out over exaggerated costs, saying they’re going to pay for all the damage.
Kingpin is getting frustrated with these criminals he’s investing his time and money in.
Kingpin meets with Doctor Connors and Octavius. Offers them all sorts of funding, if they help him out with certain “projects he’s invested in”.
Connors doesn’t trust the Fisk. Otto suggests they take it since they need the money, government grants have been slim and they want to go after more work.
Connors assures Otto that the work he’s doing with Lizard DNA is going to pan out and all their funding will come flying through the door.
Peter is constantly missing work being Spider-Man and Eddie is having to cover for him. Eddie finds out that Peter is working for the Bugle and gets mad at him because Peter said he kept missing work for “school related things.” Eddie lies for Peter to Kurt and Otto, they see Peter’s name in the paper and it blows back on Eddie for lying and covering.
Finale battle with Mysterio on the Statue of Liberty (SM2 the game style).
Final swing: Spidey hears news of the space shuttle on track to crash into the Brooklyn bridge. Spidey swinging money shots (SM2 style) with the bridge on the horizon. Epic monologue from Peter about responsibility, quick flashback to Uncle Ben for motivation while swinging.
After credits scene: cause of the shuttle crashing; black ooze from rocks they extracted from their space mission. Brutal scene, very aggressive symbiote.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2
We see the Kingpin doing experiments on Flint to "enhance" his efficiency. He then tells him to go get him those rocks extracted from the space mission.
Spider-Man sees Flint at Brooklyn bridge (sent by the Kingpin) to steal the materials extracted by the space crew. (90's Spider-Man style). Sandman battle on Brooklyn bridge with cops surrounding either side.
Symbiote gets on Spider-Man's costume after defeating Sandman.
Peter keeps dirty suit (symbiote) in his closet.
We see Kraven hearing all the news about Spider-Man robbing the shuttle. Kraven decides he is a worthy opponent after some extensive research on him, makes his way to NYC.
Spider-Man gets destroyed his first battle with Kraven. Suit gets cut/torn.
Puts dirty suit on (since his other is torn to shreds) and catches more street thugs. Alex O'Hirn. Says he reminds him of another street thug that always got caught with a similar IQ.
Second battle with Kraven... He buries Spider-Man alive after another brutal beat down. The symbiote begins to bond with Spidey underground, heals him and creates an uncontrollable rage.
Spidey emerges from the ground in the full symbiote suit.
Third and final battle with Kraven, Spidey beats him to a bloody pulp.
Spider-Man crosses the line and continues to beat Kraven without remorse for how badly he beat him.
The Kingpin breaks O’Hirn out of jail, shows him the Rhino suit. Tells him he will now have the power to break the spider and stomp on him
TASM 2 Rhino fight style in the middle of NYC, only a full 5 minute battle this time.
Spider-Man quips about how NYC is turning into a jungle, first Kraven, now a mechanized Rhino?
Fisk visits Otto alone (so he thinks) at Oscorp as he’s working with his mechanized arms. Tells Otto that Connors and Oscorp are holding him back, they don’t want him to surpass him, that he has the true potential and the others are blind to it.
Connors hears their conversation while peeking through the side office door. He knows if Otto leaves him, he’ll need to really speed up his Lizard DNA project. He injects himself and his eyes begin to turn yellow. Scene cuts to black.
Eddie is still on Peter’s back about showing up to work on time. With the symbiote Peter’s arrogance gets the best of him and he walks away. Eddie tries to grab his shoulder and Peter grabs him and throws him across the room.
Final swing: Peter contemplates the power realizing what he's giving up for it. He looks at Kraven and knows had he fought without the symbiote their roles would have been reversed. Hears something about an explosion at Oscorp during his swing. Doctor Octavius has gone missing. We are now getting reports of a giant lizard attacking the streets of NYC, more to come after this.
After Credits Scene: Kraven is defeated mentally and physically. He is at his home, holding some booze and a shotgun. He points it to his head and before he pulls the trigger, a large hand snatches it from his hand. Enter Kingpin. He tells him he’s not the only one who couldn’t take down Spider-Man on their own. Makes a reference to him how lions hunt in packs…

Marvel's Spider-Man 3
Still having the symbiote, Peter begins to see the control he’s losing from his life.
Showing up to crime scenes with thugs, they drop their bags and run away in fear because they know Spider-Man has beat beating his foes senseless.
Otto wakes up in Fisk’s lair. He tells him that he’s the Kingpin and needs his help to bring Spider-Man down. Only then will he give Otto the unlimited funding he needs for his research. He explains to him how he wants someone to lead the team he’s assembled; he needs someone with intelligence to guide his troops. Together, they could all bring down the Spider-Man.
He gets a call from Eddie and doesn’t answer. He leaves him a voicemail saying how he’s going to be late for work and to cover for him at the lab. Peter shows up for work at the Oscorp lab. When asked where Eddie is, Peter pretends like he has no idea what’s going on. He checks his voicemail on speaker, Connors hears it and is furious with Eddie. He eventually shows up and is fired on the spot by Curt. Filled with rage Eddie leaves the lab glaring at Peter saying, “I watched your back all those years in high school and THIS is how you repay me?”
Peter is in the subway taking down some crooks, when the subway passes by the suit starts to react and Peter is in agony. The suit fires off at the subway’s tracks trying to derail it to stop the sound. Peter rushes to the rescue to save what the suit had almost done to those people.
Peter is extremely concerned, he knows he needs to get rid of this before he hurts someone.
Spider-Man goes to see Doctor Connors (In the symbiote suit) to help him get rid of the suit.
He says how it’s bonded to him and to get rid of it ASAP.
Peter hears a massive explosion coming from outside the lab.
He jumps and starts to head towards the commotion.
Connors is yelling at him to take it off as he leaps to the top of the building.
As Spidey looks forward, he sees the Rhino, Sandman, Mysterio, Shocker, Kraven and Otto Octavius all slowly making their way to Oscorp.
He looks down at Connors and says… “I think I’m going to need it a little while longer Doc…”
Doctor Connors immediately rushes to his office and grabs his Lizard formula he's been working on, we see those yellow eyes emerge once more.
Sinister 6 vs. Spider-Man, the epic battle.
Kraven is the first one to attack, rushing to the top of Oscrop’s lab screaming at Spidey. All of a sudden as he approaches the glass ceiling, a giant Lizard breaks through from the bottom of the glass and grabs Kraven.
Spider-Man with the symbiote and the Lizard vs. the Sinister 6.
Use your imagination of how it works it’s way from Oscorp’s 4 story glass lab to the streets of NYC, to the top of skyscrapers, to the subways and on and on…
He is constantly asking the 6 who they are working for, who’s setting all this up, who’s responsible for all these villains and their tech. He finally gets it out of one of them that Wilson Fisk is the man behind the curtains.
The Sinister 6 are defeated, a bloody battle that Peter has no control over. He feels his body moving without his command. He knows the suit is way too dangerous to keep. He goes back to the lab with an unconscious wounded Doctor Connors. He uses the tech in the lab to extract the symbiote from his suit into a containment room.
Final Swing: Wounded, but back in his red and blue spandex, Spidey makes his way to Fisk’s office.
An all but empty boardroom, with one giant man sitting at the head of the table.
No fighting, just words exchanged. Saving Kingpin for Marvel’s Spider-Man 4.
After Credits Scene: Drunk, angry and emotional… Eddie Brock makes his way to
Oscorp to clear out his things. He sees something in the containment room, he goes
inside. He’s engulfed by the symbiote (SM3 scene) and the screen cuts to black with
sound of Venom screaming Spider-Man’s name… Spider-Man!... PETER PARKER!
Again, these are very general and vague plot lines and ideas. Just curious what you guys think. :)

Doc ock and gg are amazing villians but they never made spidey afraid or run away.

Nah son. Doc Ock and Green Goblin are mad because Spider-Man consistently ruins their plans, and even puts them in prison. That is solid reasoning to hate his guts.

The idiot known as Eddie Brock on the other hand hates Spider-Man because Eddie published a news story about Sin Eater's identity that turned out to be false when Spidey caught the real Sin Eater. He got fired and his life went to crap, and he blames Spidey for that. All Spidey did was catch a serial killer. He didn't even know Eddie from Adam. They never met. Spidey was not an obstacle to Eddie writing a good honest news story. But Brock, being the weak minded moron he is, blames the hero who captured the serial killer.

Comic book Venom has one of the stupidest motives in comic book history. He's also one of the most overrated characters ever. Why is he considered a top Spidey villain, who some rank beside Goblin and Ock? Because he has similar powers to Spidey? Whoop dee doo. He knows Spidey's identity? Big deal. What's he ever done with that? Stalk him? Scare MJ once? Pathetic and boring.

What did Goblin do when he learned Spidey's identity? Killed Gwen. What did Ock do when he found out Spidey's identity? Killed Peter himself and stole his body. That's not even counting all the other major stuff these guys did like Captain Stacy's death, hospitalizing Aunt May, making Peter and MJ lose their baby etc. Venom has never done anything that hard hitting. Not even close.

Venom is a classic example of style over substance. A character who rose to popularity because of cool look and powers. Scratch that surface and there's not much underneath. That's why Marvel writers are always palming the Venom symbiote off on anyone, from the freakin' Scorpion to Flash Thompson.

And as for Venom making Spidey fear for his loved ones, and run for his life, both Ock and Gobby did that to Spidey long before Venom's overrated ass ever showed up. Spider-Man used to s*** himself every time he was around Norman for fear Norman would strike at his loved ones. And it eventually happened when Gwen copped it. He had Doc Ock living under the same roof as Aunt May once, which ended with May having a stroke and being hospitalized.

Ock put the fear of god so badly into Spidey once that Spider-Man went and said goodbye to all his friends and loved ones because he was sure Ock was going to kill him in an upcoming battle of vengeance Ock swore on him (this was right after Ock beat Black Cat to near death which put her on life support in intensive care). One of my all time favorite stories called The Long Goodbye:

See that's the difference between Gobby and Ock with Venom. They earned their fearsome A-list status as his deadliest greatest enemies. Venom never did. Venom is a trash character who is not fit to lick Ock and Goblin's shoes. In fact I'd rate just about every major Spidey villain that Stan Lee created over that long tongued, brain eating, pathetic excuse for a villain.

How are moments from his early days (pre-bite no less) any proof of his current personality? What confuses me the most is how many Spidey fans still uphold the belief that the man who has had multiple lovers (one who is a supermodel mind you) would still carry the look and attributes of a basement dweller.

I've had multiple lovers and a lot of them were very good looking. It doesn't mean I'm mister cool, I'm spending my time on a website called superherohype. Fact is I have some cool friends, I go get drunk at parties on the weekend, and do normal things, but I'm not the image of cool.

See what I don't understand is why so many fans turn Spider-Man into a nerd's Indian Jones. Indy really isn't all that compelling of a character, he's just a really badass guy- smart, athletic, adventurous, devilishly handsome, etc. that everyone wishes they could be. A lot of people seem to think Spider-Man is supposed to be a nerdy guy who lives out the fantasies of his fans. At his core Spider-Man is about making making the hard choices because it's right and taking the high road because it's your responsibility. He's not a suave lady-killer, he's an average unremarkable (but very smart) guy who's been burdened with responsibility. Spectacular Spider-Man did a good job of portraying this.

Also everyone is looking over the fact Peter is a superhero and what happened when he revealed his identity to a certain feline lover:

A bit overcrowded.

I mean no offense to anyone else when I say this post is SO good. Made me chuckle too. Constantly proving why you're on of the best posters on the Hype!

I myself don't hate Venom persay, but I have always seen him as an overrated villain compared to the majority of Spidey's other foes due to the depth they had which Venom lacked. I liked Venom as a child because he looked cool, now I'm not much of a fan of the Eddie Brock version of the character. Venom is Spider-Man's Bane without the intelligence.

I never really got some people's need to prove a character they have a personal distaste for are objectively bad.

Why thank you

It's also interesting, and a pleasant surprise, that reading people's villain lists in the favorite villain thread here, everyone had Ock and Goblin somewhere on their list, but at least half of the people who posted their lists didn't have Venom on them.

I think the Venom craze of the 90's has long worn off. Thank god. It's ok now to have the likes of Flash Thompson be Venom over Eddie Brock. Brock's not missed by many.

I never really got some people's need to prove a character they have a personal distaste for are objectively bad.

What do you mean you don't get it? This is the most common type of post you can find on forums like this. Do you wonder why people state why they think a certain character, or a movie is good or bad, and back up why they feel this way with proof? Because it's the exact same type of thing as what I just did there. Stating your opinion on something and backing it up.

I disagree. There's a difference between posting opinion and presenting yours as the correct one. From what I've seen most don't go with the latter.

That's not presenting yours as the correct one. That's called having confidence in what you're saying. That's where the ability to back it up with factual proof to support it comes from. I believe in what I'm saying, that's why I can support it well with proof and facts. If you haven't seen that much then you haven't seen many well supported opinions.

No offense but I think this is just a personal thing for you. You seemingly didn't like the idea of one villain being put down in comparison to others when this Venom discussion started: http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=30403051&postcount=402

The ironic thing is it wasn't even about favorite villains being better than someone else's. It was and still is about stating why Venom is a genuinely weak character.

Does anyone like Carnage more then Venom? They're both weak characters IMO.

On some level. Yeah, but more that it gets tiresome seeing people post their opinion as fact. Not so much about someone attacked a character I liked. I wouldn't really call your posts "well supported opinions" when all you do is give a dismissive opinion and call it fact.
