I'm thinking he meant that he'll be getting MORE than just ASM starting next week... my guess, Uncanny Avengers.

Correct good sir!

But the HobGoblin arc just started... and it's been pretty damn sweet so far...

I am looking forward to another confrontation with the new Hobgoblin, it has been a while. I get Spider-Man through subscription though, so I am still waiting on 693. :|

Ok, so went to the shop to pick up some boxes and spent about an hour talking to the owner who is an old silver-age guy like me. I told him I was going to be dropping my subscription likely after ASM 700. He actually offered me a $50 credit if I tried 3 of the new titles for 3 months and don;t like any of them. So I'll obviously make one of them the Spider-Man title after #700 but I'm not sure what other 2 to pick. Hickman's Avengers may have possibilities. We'll see. I guess never say never...when offered a store credit!

I might as well copy Thwip's op from the NOW thread to the ASM one.

Superior spider-man revealed!!!!

supriorspider-man_02.jpg

that old nycc battle is so on, and spidey isn't letting supes be the only fashion show with new duds and a big announcement. Dan slott, along with artists ryan stegman and humberto ramos, is launching superior spider-man in january 2013, and spidey's new look is just the beginning.
The original "superior" teaser was the most enigmatic of marvel's one-word clues to the future of their marvel now! Relaunch. last week, the word added a few more: Slott, stegman, ramos. All three, the writer and two artists, are closely associated with one peter parker, spider-man. With amazing spider-man coming to an end with decemeber's 700th issue, the creative team being attached to "superior" in january 2013 certainly made us think spider-man. But what did "superior" actually mean?

Well, we were right about Spidey, and he's definitely going to be superior. Revealed today by Marvel on USAToday's comics page, Spider-Man has a new series, new abilities, and like his pal over at that other publisher, a new suit to boot. And he'll be darker, with "friendly neighborhood" out the door, says USAToday.
"The first story arc is called 'Hero or menace?' I think that pretty much tells you where we're going," Slott told the publication. "He's not going to be doing things the old Spider-Man way. There will be a new way of doing things."
The writer teased that something very bad will be happening to Peter Parker in Amazing Spider-Man #700, and it will culminate in him being more ruthless in order to be more effective.
"All I know is I'm going into my reinforced bunker when 700 comes out," said Slott, despite fellow Spidey-writer, Avenging Spider-Man scribe Chris Yost, having a very good reaction to the issue when he read the script early.
While most of the Marvel NOW! titles will feature a new creative team, Superior Spider-Man holds onto Slott, and at his discretion. But Slott assures readers that doesn't mean they'll see nothing new from him, even joking, "You're getting a new writer on this book, and his name also happens to be Dan Slott and he is very messed up. I hear this guy wrote Arkham Asylum and Great Lakes Avengers."
Along with the new look and Spidey's new attitude, a new Sinister Six with "at least one new member" will appear early on in the book. Ryan Stegman will draw the first arc, with Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli coming in rotating arcs.
"I remember having Spider-Man covers I would tear off and put on the wall," Stegman told USAToday of his love for the character. "I hope that first-issue cover can be that for some kids out there."
The sketch of Spidey's slightly altered costume may also have revealed one of his new abilities. There's a "retractable claw" marked on his toe. While the writer wasn't quoted as directly hinting this might not be Peter Parker, it was teased that a replacement isn't out of the question.
Stay tuned for more Superior Spider-Man details, and hints at the big finish to Amazing Spider-Man, this weekend from New York Comic Con.

So I'd just like hear thoughts on a few things:

'darker'
'the old way of doing things as spider-man is out'
'retractable toe claw'
Oh and 'replacement isn't out of the question'

I'm just sitting here shaking my head...

Tooooooeeeee Piiiiicccckkkkk! (terrible idea, like spider-stingers bad)

It sounds like JMS' back in black run.

I enjoyed Back in Black. I thought it was a fantastic story, especially the final issue

The beatdown of kingpin was pretty epic and one of the best asskickings Pete's ever handed out. Not sure how much fun that would be 24/7 though. We do already have kaine as the scarlet spider.

Black in Black was pretty awesome considering it was sandwiched in what I felt was an era of mediocrity of Spider-Man.

Correct me if I'm wrong but was that only the second time Spidey and Fisk went head to head like that, the other being back during the Marv Wolfman run?

They've thrown down a few times really but that time was when peter really made it clear that kingpin or any normally strong human doesn't have any chance against him. Something far too many writers forget.

Yeah but that's fine. It gives the writers the opportunity to make the a villain more cunning by combating the hero in other ways than with fists. Some take advantage, some don't.

Ugh. Slott pretty much just took a run that started off shaky, got really really really ****ing good to the point I had forgiven all the **** we had to go through to get to that point.

And now there's this? If that's Scrappy Doo under there I'm done.

The bxxxx has talons on his fingers and toes big toes (only)?

If you're going to rip-off Spidey 2099, don't half-ass it...

God so much freaking doom and gloom.

The only thing that's giving me any kind of hope is Slott saying to hang in there.

Nothing else seems to be a positive: "Superior" Spider-Man, costume change, claws, not the old way Spider-Man handles things, darker...

:csad:

I'm willing to give Dan a chance. It's just that a lot of the buzzwords and ideas being thrown around are worrying me. Looking at the new details, I'm wondering if Pete becomes more Spider-y hence the "Superior" Spider-man? He's more Spider than Pete thus he's giving it all a 100% thing? The new powers (clawed fingertips, toe spikes, indent in mouth) seem to be indicating that the changes will be far reaching in terms of his identity.

I'm going to get the Ditko cover for ASM #700... it's going to cost a few bucks... but it'll be worth it... ;up:

:yay:

Kingpin was just there just to be punched, he barely moved in that fight

At this point I am a little wary of a relaunch for a series which I don't think needs it - ASM's sales have been rock solid with many notable spikes due to particular stories over the past few years - but I've liked Dan Slott's "BIG TIME" era very much. Aside for some co-written issues by Christos Gage he's crafted an amazing solo run on the book for me. While I won't say it's all been flawless in my eyes, I can admit I probably haven't enjoyed my time on the title this much since the 90's, at least well over 15 years ago. So I will give it some benefit of the doubt. Tinkering with Spider-Man often feels like trying to re-invent the wheel, but I'll be better able to judge/rant when the issues come out.

The JMS era saw Spider-Man's powers shift before ultimately being reset to square one later on, and hopefully this change won't be as awkward as that was.

As for the costume, ever since Disney bought Marvel, Spidey has seemed to get one new costume every 6 months or so. It'll just make for a new skin for a video game. ;) Of course, we're in an era where not even Superman's costume is safe from tinkering anymore.

It did seem to be a waste to remove Ryan Stegman from SCARLET SPIDER, a title he seemed to enjoy doing, just to provide art for the last few issues of Hickman's run on FANTASTIC FOUR before that relaunch. Having him become one of the 3 rotating artists for SSM seems to work. I suppose this means that Stefano Caselli's last arc as regular artist were most of ENDS OF THE EARTH. A shame, as I've always liked his stuff.

I could argue "superior" is a very "confidant" adjective, but I imagine that it is because Spidey's titles haven been through many which rolled off the tongue easily. Amazing, spectacular, sensational, avenging, friendly neighborhood...and just plain ol' "Spider-Man" was done too. And it still doesn't beat Brian Bendis titling a creator owned series "BRILLIANT". Of course it is, dude. :o

Kingpin is just a guy, peter is capable of dodging a hail of bullets and strong enough that with just touching the top of a guy's head and a finger on his chest he could pull and decapitate. Kingpin, hell no ordinary human has a chance if pete doesn't want them too.

Ever since Slott started writing solo, Spidey's been in a new costume every other arc.

And considering Marvel's yet to use those alternate costumes for anything outside of maybe a stray action figure, don't ya think its probable its just Dan who's into costume changes?

I don't think it's going to be Peter behind the mask... whoever it is needs those retractable claws to crawl on walls... Peter wouldn't need such things...

:yay:

So this is a new Spider-Man (not Peter Parker) Dan Slott just anounced and to add insult they are having this guy get with Mary Jane.
