Ock being in Peter's body and dating MJ raises the ick factor to 10, let's not forget he was pegging Aunt May for a while. It would make for an interesting story though...

But Marvel has gone the ick factor before (Sins Past, anyone?)...

It would be interesting if it involved Pete confronting Mephisto as well...

Again, I think Dan likes tweak us on purpose and pretty much knew what our reactions would be, which is why he said have faith and keep reading. So, far, he has earned my trust.

So, I weathered the Clone Saga, Sins Past, and OMD/BND, I guess I can give Dan the benefit of the doubt, since has proven he knows the character...

He seems to have a plan here that extends well past Superior Spider-Man #1. I'll freak out if Marvel fires him off the book before he puts everything back in place. As far as I'm concerned, I think Dan wants to end his run with Peter and MJ remarried and Spider-Man back in pre-OMD form.

I'm looking at this like Dan's version of what Brubaker did with The Death of Captain America. It did wonders for that title, let's see what it does here (provided it's the route he goes down).

Another idea is Spider-Man is Peter Parker, but something has happened to him that he's not himself. Maybe some more metamorphosis stuff that makes him more spider and brutal. Maybe something tied with Madame Webb and what's been going on...

Just spit balling...

This makes me think about going to NYCC this weekend and hunt down Dan for info...

I'm sure Dan has to run home and take a fire axe to his internet connection.

Yeah, one possibility that just occurred to me and others is that the twist to this is that, technically, Spider-Man is STILL Peter Parker, only he's been forced to give up his identity as Peter Parker for whatever reason. After all, the Daily Bugle has just outed Peter as Spider-Man's "tech guy" which, as we saw in ASM #695, has now potentially put a huge target on his back and puts his secret identity in jeopardy. And Doc Ock figures out Peter is Spider-Man, which, of course REALLY puts him and his loved ones in danger. So maybe Peter has no choice but to make the world think he's dead and thus is now Spider-Man all the time. That certainly would fit in with the notion that Slott will do something to Spidey "that has never been done before" in issue #700, because instead of Peter quitting as Spidey, he quits as Peter Parker. And, it fits in with the notion of the Superior Spider-Man being someone other than Peter because Peter is, technically, no longer Peter. And it fits with Mary Jane "getting back together with Spider-Man," as well.

admit it, you're Stegman aren't you :P

all the same that's a pretty good theory

That's pretty solid there Stillanerd.

Thanks. And, it also fits in with the idea that Spider-Man is now "superior" because Peter now doesn't have his life as Peter Parker to make his life more complicated. And it could fit in with the new darker attitude and personality because Peter can't let on anything that would suggest it's still him under the mask.

That makes sense. As long as they don't go back into that whole I Am The Spider/Peter No More stuff that I DESPISED back just prior to the Clone mess of the 90's.

Well, I DO know how to draw, but not nearly as good as Stegman can. :yay:

Same here.

Dunno if this has been mentioned but Spidey's still in his usual getup on the Avengers covers. Perhaps Pete is still in the business.

Well, we can breathe (somewhat) a sigh of relief. Because over on Dan Slott's twitter, he was asked how Spidey and MJ can be "back together" if it's a new Spidey, to which Dan Slott replied:
Dan Slott said:
Cause people are getting the quote wrong. I said something VERY specific and people are paraphrasing and changing the meaning.

I'm glad to see so many people into Back in Black. It was the best "dark" Spidey stories since Kraven's Last Hunt.

What's not to like about Back in Black? Black costume drawn with Garney's best pencils up to that point, and a Kingpin beatdown.

The Child Within was way better than Back in Black but I'll still give BiB it's due. This is the list of best Spider-Man "dark" stories as I see it.....

1)Kraven's Last Hunt
2)The Child Within
3)Anything Peter David did during his PPTSSM run
4)everything else

For some reason I was thinking Child Within was before Kraven's Last Hunt. I dunno why. :o

It was kind of a sequel.

And another dark story that I liked though I don't think many would put it up with KLH or CW is Torment (Spider-Man 1-5). It was also a follow up to KLH but man, the scenes of Spider-Man all beat up lying in rubble and then when he jumps at the panel all bloody and drugged yelling "ENOUGH!" was just awesome. Loved it!

The Child Within has always been my favorite dark Spidey story after Kravens Last Hunt. I've been hoping for a while now that they would collect that in a trade.

After reading everyones thoughts I'll hold off judgment on the Superior Spidey. If this leads to pre-OMD I'll be contented.

Torment never impressed me much. I dunno, it just seemed to be very much a product of the time it was written.

Spider-Man Reign was pretty good as well. Although its such an unapologetic parody of The Dark Knight Returns, it's kind of hard to ignore.

Torment should have been called "How not to write a comic book story" by Todd McFarlane. The art was great but every page for 5 issues straight was DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM
DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM
DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM
DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM

in 32pt font.

But didn't David Micheline write it?
