The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spiderman 2 - User Review Thread! - SPOILERS! - Part 1

I saw the film today in IMAX 3D and I probably would give it 3/5 or 3.5/5. It was better and more enjoyable than the first Amazing Spider-Man. I really liked the Peter and Gwen relationship, Dane Dahaan's performance, the 3D was great, CGI for the most part was better than the first film, the action was stepped up from the last film with some of the Electro scenes near the end and the cinematography was more colourful than the first film and looked more like a Spidey comic which I liked, Spidey's costume was perfect and I did like the mystery of Peter's parents resolved.

But this film does have quite a few flaws, first of all some people who saw rough cuts said a lot of things have been reshot, replaced or deleted from the film and I noticed some things that are in the trailer aren't in the final film. I think Marc Webb simply shot too much and didn't know what to do with it. Thank god he deleted the Shailene Woodley MJ scenes because this film was overcrowded enough.

The film just sometimes jumps from subplot to subplot and didn't have much focus and sure, we know in the long run where the franchise is going (Sinister Six), but I was actually thinking half way through, what is THIS particular film about, what is the theme.

I think it just had too many subplots:
- Peter/Gwen and their on/off struggling relationship with Peter seeing visions of Captain Stacey and Gwen moving to Oxford in England etc
- Harry moving back and his relationship with Norman and friendship with Peter and the fact he needs Spidey's blood to stop his 'family curse' and his (slightly rushed) transformation into Goblin.
- Max Dillon's subplot with him being obsessed with Spidey and his transformation into Electro.
- Rhino
- Peter's relationship with Aunt May and her becoming a nurse which didn't really go anywhere.
- The whole subplot and mystery with Peter's parents.
- PLUS, all the setting up for future films such as Sinister Six (Doc Ock's tentacles, Vulture's Wings), Felicia Hardy, Peter's Daily Bugle job etc

As I just listed, there is simply too much going on and like I mentioned above IMAGINE how packed it would have been if Marc Webb left the Mary Jane scenes in...

Another thing is the tone, one minute it is a romcom, one minute a sort of darker, grounded approach, then one minute sort of camp, cheesy and slightly OTT with Han Zimmer's Max Dillon sort of goofy John Williams Lex Luther-esque theme from the original Superman, that stereotypical mad german scientist, Paul Giamatii's really OTT performance, some of Spidey's quips etc

But I did overall like this film, it does have some good redeemable qualities, but to me, it's not as good as Cap 2 or Raimi's Spider-Man 2 etc. I will say that Marc Webb is moving in the right direction though, but he hasn't quite hit a home run yet with this new rebooted Spidey franchise. I just think with this particular film, he tried to please too many people and threw all his eggs in one basket, so for Spidey 3, I hope the story is more streamlined and focused.

despite the, being overcrowded are any of them even well handled?

My advice. Log off when a movie is due out soon. Bookmark anything in particular you fancy coming back to and reading after the movie comes out and try seeing the movie without having coloured you own opinion with what other people have said.

I wonder if the cast and crews confidence were misplaced with this movie. Like, could this movie had been much better if it had been edited down and some elements were cut, or would it only lead to slight improvements that, in the grand scheme of things, appear insignificant? I was hoping this would be the reining CBM of the year, but thus far it looks like that title is secured pretty tightly by TWS. I'll just have to see for myself.

anyone here who saw the film even liked it?

also how much of it were cut?

hopefully it was all of webb's decision. i meanoriginally the first film was stated to be 4 HOURS LONG while judging from the trailers, plots, and synopsis it seemed to be much longer than what we expected. hopefully they'll come with a director's cut

Just judge it for yourself and not what others say, just like you should with any movie.

The difference is SM-2 had one villain, and the three fight scenes were more spaced out. TASM 2 has three villains and two fight scenes, both in the finale.

Yeah you are right there.

You may feel it's both. It's all opinion. Like I said judge it for yourself.

I'll go with an open mind but just with lower expectations. By the way, I do not think this franchise should ever explore Doc Ock, who is by far my favourite villain. We have his definitive adaptation already and I do not want to see him short-changed by Goblin. What do you think?

Lowered expectations may not be a bad thing. You might end up enjoying the film a lot more than someone whose expectations are through the roof.

Does the movie feel like it attempts to backpedal too much when it comes to the establishments made by the first one? I could see that leading to a lot of these criticisms.

No, not really .

ugh, anyone else thought they were well handled despite having separate plots? from the separate plots and the last film originally being 4 hours long i believe webb is the peter jackson of difectors meaning that his from his ideas it seems that they are actually like maybe 4 or 6 hours long

Yes, we all wiil have to see it for ourselves. I just feel that you are pre-judging this film A LOT. If you are going for the reviews, the positives far outweighs the negativess, regardless if we count the RT reviews or not. I've talked with a Brazillian critic that I trust a lot and he hated The Amazing Spider-Man. He thinks that this is one of the best films of the genre, so I don't the reactions we are getting are mixed, but overwhelming positive with some negative, like any other great superhero film.

I didn't dislike it. It was ok. The main reason I'd pop it into my DVD player is for Peter and Gwen.

Ock is my favorite Spidey villain, too. Since I think Webb's Achilles heel is how he handles the villains I'd also prefer if Ock was left out of it.

But you get clear shots of Ock's tentacles at least twice in this movie. First when Harry goes down there, and then that scene you've all seen in the trailers which also show Vulture's wings.

I heard lots of murmurs of "Doc Ock" in my audience at that scene. I don't think people generally recognize Vulture as he's not been in a movie yet.

What some hate others will like and what some like others will hate, it goes both ways really

That's true for basically everything, there's not one single thing on this Earth that is universally well like, but consesuses (?) are still made. Issues such as underdeveloped villians, leaps in logic etc. I see as geninue issues, because there's not really a way to take and interprete them in a positive way, I think it has more to do with what the individual is willing to overlook and what they expect to see. Just because you don't see the criticisms doesn't mean they're not there, you just might have been able to overlook them.

I'm starting to think that a Doc Ock possibly not leading S6 and not being developed enough would be [blackout]worse than Harry killing Gwen...yes I said it![/blackout]

was akystar smythe even in the film?

Yup.
. He played "guy who was the office jerk" to Foxx's Max Dillon.

I think that was largely it. Though like many things I expect they're largely their just to foreshadow future roles.

Oh goodness yes its a terrible movie you shouldn't watch it

Not everyone is gonna like the same thing so just because someone hates something doesn't mean its gonna ruin your own personal enjoyment
