I saw the film today in IMAX 3D and I probably would give it 3/5 or 3.5/5. It was better and more enjoyable than the first Amazing Spider-Man. I really liked the Peter and Gwen relationship, Dane Dahaan's performance, the 3D was great, CGI for the most part was better than the first film, the action was stepped up from the last film with some of the Electro scenes near the end and the cinematography was more colourful than the first film and looked more like a Spidey comic which I liked, Spidey's costume was perfect and I did like the mystery of Peter's parents resolved.
But this film does have quite a few flaws, first of all some people who saw rough cuts said a lot of things have been reshot, replaced or deleted from the film and I noticed some things that are in the trailer aren't in the final film. I think Marc Webb simply shot too much and didn't know what to do with it. Thank god he deleted the Shailene Woodley MJ scenes because this film was overcrowded enough.
The film just sometimes jumps from subplot to subplot and didn't have much focus and sure, we know in the long run where the franchise is going (Sinister Six), but I was actually thinking half way through, what is THIS particular film about, what is the theme.
I think it just had too many subplots:
- Peter/Gwen and their on/off struggling relationship with Peter seeing visions of Captain Stacey and Gwen moving to Oxford in England etc
- Harry moving back and his relationship with Norman and friendship with Peter and the fact he needs Spidey's blood to stop his 'family curse' and his (slightly rushed) transformation into Goblin.
- Max Dillon's subplot with him being obsessed with Spidey and his transformation into Electro.
- Rhino
- Peter's relationship with Aunt May and her becoming a nurse which didn't really go anywhere.
- The whole subplot and mystery with Peter's parents.
- PLUS, all the setting up for future films such as Sinister Six (Doc Ock's tentacles, Vulture's Wings), Felicia Hardy, Peter's Daily Bugle job etc
As I just listed, there is simply too much going on and like I mentioned above IMAGINE how packed it would have been if Marc Webb left the Mary Jane scenes in...
Another thing is the tone, one minute it is a romcom, one minute a sort of darker, grounded approach, then one minute sort of camp, cheesy and slightly OTT with Han Zimmer's Max Dillon sort of goofy John Williams Lex Luther-esque theme from the original Superman, that stereotypical mad german scientist, Paul Giamatii's really OTT performance, some of Spidey's quips etc
But I did overall like this film, it does have some good redeemable qualities, but to me, it's not as good as Cap 2 or Raimi's Spider-Man 2 etc. I will say that Marc Webb is moving in the right direction though, but he hasn't quite hit a home run yet with this new rebooted Spidey franchise. I just think with this particular film, he tried to please too many people and threw all his eggs in one basket, so for Spidey 3, I hope the story is more streamlined and focused.
despite the, being overcrowded are any of them even well handled?
