Superman Returns The American Way?

"Frankly the hours were somewhat longer than I expected, Lois, but then... meeting you and Jimmy and Mr. White - on the whole I think it's swell"

But that seems to be everybody. Everyone works long hours.

Plus he has the money to send half his paycheck to his mother on a weekly basis.

Did you see the date on the suit?

Most suits dont have sell by dates. its a suit, not a sandwich.

sends half his paycheck to his mother? just like all those "fence Jumpers", accepting his mother is the woman that lied on adoption papers.

you have to face it, the reason he doesnt want to stand for the american way is cos he is an illegal immigrant.

Illegal immigrant, or an orphaned refugee? Besides he was adopted legally by the Kents.

but they lied on the papers. said he was Martha's sisters or something, did they not?. so he wasnt adopted legally.

I heard somewhere that it was a decision made by Singer himself. If thats true, I see it as a major blunder on his part, and he should have known better. Thats why he is paid the big bucks as director. He needs to make the right decisions.
The problem is that "right" is a completely subjective term. In my opinion, he did do the right thing by leaving it out.

It would have been fine to just leave the phrase out entirely. But to replace "The American way" with "and all that stuff" because of political motivations was a blaitant error. Its very obvious and draws attention where none needs to be drawn - that is away from the plot of the film. A good director should not make that mistake.
But is it really a blatant error or was it to draw attention to the political apathy and cynicism these newspapermen share?

Me, I don't care about the particular reasons why it was taken out. I'm just glad that it was.

A technicality that hardly seems a problem. He was accepted and was raised under American values. The country doesn't kick out babies of unexplained origin.

From a philosophical point of view, I would take issue with you on the term "right" being completely subjective, although I understand the notion of moral relativism.

But in this case, I was speaking in terms of what is good for the film from a both a thematic and a marketing and box office persepctive. And from that perspective, I maintain that it was the wrong thing to do. I don't think Singer was trying to make a politically provacative film, but if he was then the decision to replace "American way" with "all the stuff" makes sense. Otherwise it is a distraction, and as others have noted it would be better to just leave it out entirely if Singer could not bring himself to use the phrase properly.

I'm wondering if Captain America's going to have to be Captain Stuff for his movie.

That's probably the reason you are not seeing any talks about a Cap movie shooting any soon.

A Cap movie shouldn't be afraid to be political. He did fight in World War 2. So there's no need to tip toe around it.

Well.....Superman IS an illegal alien. I mean, if he was Kal-El- Rodriguez.....maybe people would ***** more about it. But, since he looks white....and grew up in the sort of white america, a farm....sort of like the roots of America where in the South......then......hey, it's all good I guess.

I love how everyone gets so upset over the 'American way' part not being said.

Somehow its a negative thing against Superman.

Secondly, in The first Superman film (when he does say it) Lois mocks him for it. I dont see anyone complaining about that.

Well you obviously missed the big picture when she said that...it was to show that the "American Way" is beyond the govt officials, its our system and our people and values, not the current people in the government.

Understand?

America was built on
- Rebellion and violent revolution against the sovereign gov't
- Greed
- Exploitation and murder of minorities
- Deism
- Sexism
- Arrogance ("Manifest Destiny")
- Political and Financial corruption
- Subjugation of the poor

and hundreds of years later we're still combatting those American attitudes.
"American Way" was added in a very naive, blithely ignorant time. It never should've been added.

What a completely one sided post!!

Very nice

You obviously have a very objective and unbiased view about America.

I'd like to point out a quote from Singer thats been in my sig for a while now "To me, the story of Superman is the story of America and what it means to be a hero" - Bryan Singer

CBB, Should read, Supes WAS an illegal. Adoption erases that illegal part.

Not when he's from another planet. I think the government would actually disagree with you on that one.

Umm, many of you say that the term American way would hurt SR over seas, but umm Spider-Man has a brilliant shot of him on the American flag and that didn't seem to hurt the film.

But intl audiences don't inherently associate Spidey with Ameirca, he just happens to be American.

I guess you're right.

The way I've thought of it is, Superman is what America strives to be, but Spider-Man is what America is.

DISCLAIMER: I loved the movie and do not condemn it in anyway. This thread is more of a concern than a complaint.

"Does he still stand for truth, justice, all that stuff?" - Perry White in SR

Why doesn't he stand for the American way anymore? The writers even said that they purposely left it out of the script. Why?

The American Way is more than what our recent presidential canidates stand for. It is the ideals America was built upon and why Superman became so popular in American culture and worldwide. If they were so keen on giving us lines from the old Donner film, why couldn't they have come up with an alternative for this line:

"I'm here to fight for truth, justice, and the American way." - Superman

"You're gonna end up fighting every elected official in this country!" - Lois

THAT shows that the American way is more than the politicians running the country. It shows that America stands for more than what some elected official wants. It shows that American ideals embrace freedom, peace, and tolerance.

So why make Superman a globalist in Superman Returns? Why detach him from his American roots simply by subverting one line in the film?

apparently superman doesnt fight for the american way anymore, kryptonite no longer hurts him, and he suffers from chronic depression. this wasnt superman, it was a guy in a superman costume pretending to be superman

I always thought Superman is what America....and well, people.....stride to be. Aspire to be. But, Batman is what we are....what America is. Mortals, striding for a better future admist a dark, and turmoiled world where we live in secrecy and paranoia (qualites apparent with Batman).

But, maybe that's just me.

Why are you always so offencive when this topic is around

Superman the Movie said:
Superman - "Well, I stand for truth, Justice and the American way"

Lois - "You're going to end up fighting every government official"

Superman - "You dont really mean that Lois?"

Superman said what he stands for. Lois (Being a reporter) Returned with a mocking, cynical remark.
