Superman Returns The American Way?

Anyway, ... who says "The American way"........is the "correct way" ?

Go figure.

There are only three ways to do things,

The right way, The wrong way and the MAX POWER way. The MAX POWER way is the wrong way, only faster.

I guess you're right.

The way I've thought of it is, Superman is what America strives to be, but Spider-Man is what America is.

I'd say Batman was more accurate anaology for that: idealistic but f**ked up.

Not when he's from another planet. I think the government would actually disagree with you on that one.

I didn't know we had alien world laws on the books.

Ha. That episode was on the other night.

"No-one snuggles with Max Power! You just strap yourself in and feel the G's!"

:D

There probably is.....although we don't know it......yet.

Think about it. An alien from another planet wouldn't be treated the same, or given the same rights, as a baby from Mexico......or something.

And, atleast through SMALLVILLE, his adoption was a cover up, illegally done.....but with false-fied papers so to cover up...well, ya know.

Max Power way, everytime. It's done wonders for my life.

I ment defensive... Silly late night posting :o

Well that still does not make sense....all I said was
"Well you obviously missed the big picture when she said that...it was to show that the "American Way" is beyond the govt officials, its our system and our people and values, not the current people in the government.

Understand?"

How is that being defensive?

Offense is the best form of defense.

Here's the thing for me........The film's went out of it's way to drive home the Superman / Christ connection, and yet it tucked it's tail between it's legs regarding "The American Way".

Surely the atrocities committed under the auspices of Christianity thru the ages dwarfs any negative American Way connotations.

The ideals of America, as put forth in the Bill of Rights, certainly are worthy of admiration and although the realization of the ideals may at times fall short, it is always those ideals that I think of when I hear the phrase "Truth, Justice, and the American Way."

Sounds like the Max Power way to me.

And, really.....is there any other way to do it?

America was built on
- Rebellion and violent revolution against the sovereign gov't
- Greed
- Exploitation and murder of minorities
- Deism
- Sexism
- Arrogance ("Manifest Destiny")
- Political and Financial corruption
- Subjugation of the poor

and hundreds of years later we're still combatting those American attitudes.
"American Way" was added in a very naive, blithely ignorant time. It never should've been added.

I don't mind it being added when it was (the only time I see it is watching Donner's films anyway), it probably speaks a good amount for the global socio-political situation at the time and for the following decades. Just like how "all that stuff" makes similar acknowledgements... I don't understand the big issue with replacing 3 words with a different 3.

He was a immigrant who doesn't live off of tax payers dollars, earns his own income, and saves people worldwide. That excuses him from being your average fense-hopper.

when did "Superman" become a commentary about illegal immigration?..

I think the majority of the world views that Bush is the one who is wrong while most are infact sympathetic for the American people. The french alone got banned from protesting Bush when he arrived in Paris for a short visit, so that proves the world isn't blind.

America bless God!

Well said. The international community realizes pretty well how things happen here, and it's not a situation of the world hating americans or anything like that. On an international level, people realize how young our country is, and factors like that are definitely taken into consideration.

I think it was for both- to distinguish the underlying values, but at the same time to acknowledge what the "American way" was politically evolving into.

Man, I should have kept up on this thread... I'm going through all these posts that I haven't read and trying to reply to all of them [so yea, sorry about all the 'Drago' posts your seeing in a row]

Umm, many of you say that the term American way would hurt SR over seas, but umm Spider-Man has a brilliant shot of him on the American flag and that didn't seem to hurt the film.

hey, that reminds me, has anybody here seen 'Syriana'? There's a scene in there where kids are playing soccer and they're talking about Spider-Man, and mention Parker being the good side, Spider-Man the evil, and stuff like that. I think they comment something about the other countries of the world interpreting Spider-Man differently than us.

oh yea, and Spidey 3 will rock.

At first when I saw Supes falling I was thinking that they were trying to draw a connection, but I don't think it fits (that's just how you would fall I guess..). MAYBE though, they had intentions of giving a little nod to Christianity to accomodate conservatives with the "he is a savior" type of thing. That would be a good way to accomodate both sides by showing each the values he does stand for.

[Your last paragraph] Anyone else think it's ironic that this debate has turned into one over patriotism, but that "patriotism" in this case is inhibiting freedom of speech?

I think I'm all caught up now with old posts..

hey all.......

I consider myself a moderate conservative. I am a proud American. I love this country. I love Fox News! I support President Bush and our efforts around the world.

No, we are not perfect......our administration is not perfect......but America is a d**n fine country, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!!

With that being said.....I was NOT offended by the omission of the phrase. I thought it fit well with the CONTEXT of the story. That is, Superman is returning to a cynical and jaded world that has moved on without him.

So.......Perry saying "All that stuff" just shows his cynicism......plus it is a lighthearted jab at the classic tagline.

Just like, they didn't finish the entire "It's a bird, It's a plane" phrase.

So, I don't think it was being overtly unamerican......it was just playing into the CONTEXT of the story.

Plus, I feel "American Way" is a bit exclusionary anyways. That's almost saying our way ( the American Way ) is better than everybody else's way. And, that's not that case.

That doesn't mean the American Way is bad. Again, I love the American Way....wouldn't have it any other way........but, I don't want to impose my Ways on someone else.....just as I wouldn't want somebody else's ways imposed on me......

But why? It's so ridiculously biased it's virtually a self-parody. What's the point in watching the news just to hear what you want rather than what's actually going on?
