Statistcly I hear athiests are less likely to suffer from depresion. Most likely for those who don't believe in the afterlife. We make the best out of this, our one and only life.

I try to.

Are you so uncomfortable in your belief that you have to have a page for support?

We're basically the most disliked minority in this country. I live in an area where I don't even come out with it in public out of genuine fear for my safety.

That's got to be one of the more embarrassing phenomena I've encountered since I've been using the internet...People making "Official" threads that aren't official.:o
Especially when they blatantly break a rule, like "Welcome to the OFFICIAL SPAM THREAD! This is where you can post nonsense to get your post-count up. Go ahead and post anything that pops into your mind! Enjoy!"

haha, I saw one like that once, for...a few seconds.

It annoys me to no end. I keep wanting to go through and remove "official' from the title of threads. :o This one was even more egregious as it said it was the "Official Superherohype! Atheist Page".

That really depends on your part of the country. I've been fairly open about my being an Atheist for a number of years now, and I don't think people have disliked me for it. They certainly haven't said anything if my Atheism did offend them.

Then again, I've always lived up north.

There are threads that somewhat deal with Atheism but never a thread solely devoted to Atheism that is why i put Official in the title. I'm sorry if you disaproved and i am thankful that you cahnged the title

That's funny. Everything I've seen says the opposite. People with strong belief in god had lower incidence of depression.

"Religious belief and practices have been associated with lower levels of depression in persons dealing with stressful situations. In this study, researchers examined this relationship in 271 persons diagnosed with clinical depression. It was hypothesized that religious belief and practices would be associated with lower depression and that this relationship would be mediated by hopelessness. Religious belief, but not religious behavior, was a significant predictor of lower levels of hopelessness and depression beyond demographic variables. Through the relation of religious belief to lower levels of hopelessness, religious belief was indirectly related to less depression. There was also a small direct positive association of belief with depression, pointing to the complexity of the role belief plays for religious persons. Further study is needed for a better understanding of different ways religion affects depressed persons."

Yes, yes it does. I think my life could potentially be in danger by revealing I'm an atheist here. I might as well say I'm gay or something.

The reason Religous people are less likely to be depressed is because they have given themselves a false scence of security. People think as long as they go to church they will be protected by evil so they have no stress.

Atheist people also arn't stressed because they arn't worried about forgiveness for there sins or the end of the world.

The two counteract each other making it impossible to get a good idea on which causes more stress

Just because you think something different gives you no right to label a belief in God as a false "scence" of security.

I just realized I'm an atheist because this is a godless state . . .

I wonder how many people are battered or killed each year for professing their athiesm.

This is the Atheist Page that is an Atheist belief i can state that just like you can state that you believe in god

I meant....it's weird for someone who is religious, to get so worked up at the thought that someone is an athiest. I am a Babtist (you know, one of the groups portrayed as the most intolerant of other's beliefs).....and I have friends who are athiest, religious, and have no idea what to believe......it doesn't bother me....I find it wierd that it bothers others who proclaim to be religious to think this way.

I understand.. but my comment was directed at the subject period(whether or not religious people are more or less depressed than atheists).
