The Avengers The Avengers Critics Reviews Thread - Part 3

Positives from Top Critic San Francisco Chronicle and Washington Post.

Personally I disagree with him saying its not a game changer like the Dark Knight.

Look at the site it's coming from.:o

But seriously, even the most diehard of Nolanites should be able to see this as a game changer. It shows that a shared universe in a string of movies is possible, viable, and profitable. And this film shows that a big ensemble movie can not only work, it can be great (according to reviews).

That alone changes the game.

I know I really like Jett but his bias towards Batman does bug me at times. I don't get how he can't say its a game changer its the first time this has been attempted theatrically and its breaking box office records.

The only way to know if something's a game-changer is to wait and see if it changes the game.

But still, Jett's a bag of butts.

Everybody keeps using that damned word! Don't they know that heroing is dark, serious business? There's just too much humor and action in this flick. Whedon needed to make his jokes unfunny, dress all of the characters in black leather, cut back the effects shots and limit the action to a couple of low-budget looking sequences where no one used their powers in order to save money.

Thor: "Dost thou know what happens to a Chitauri that gets struck by lightning?"

Chitauri soldier: "Skraaa?"

Thor: "Nothing. That **** costs money."
:woot:

Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post positively raved about the acting in The Avengers. She was so impressed that she wrote a wonderful essay about the performances in TA and other superhero movies. I am stunned. That woman is like Mikey: She hates everything! This is either Marvel's ultimate triumph or a sign of the End Times. Or both.

Essay: ‘Avengers’ proves actors still matter

Seriously, read the whole thing. It's great. And bear in mind that this is not Hornaday's review of The Avengers. Given the content of the essay, I expect that to be glowing as well. (There are spoilers in this essay, fr those who haven't seen the movie).

At least we're going out with a bang. :woot:

David Edelstein pulled a rare double: He filed two (2) positive reviews and had them both count on the tomatometer. The first was for the New York Daily News, the second for NPR's Fresh Air. And get this: Edelstein rates as a top critic for both outlets. He totally negated A.O. Scott. :cwink:

'The Avengers': A Marvel-ous Whedonesque Ride

xeno000, maybe you should edit your post about Ann Hornaday's essay to warn people there're spoilers from the movie in it. There are a lot of us who haven't seen it yet.

Yeah, apparently The Avengers is her "critic pick". Sweet!

I haven't read it yet, so I'm unaware if there are spoilers in it.

Thanks for the reminder. I've seen the movie so spoilers just go over my head. I edited the post. :yay:

Color me surprised at the Washington Post review. That lady has made it known she is no fan of these high budget whiz-bang movies. I'm pleasantly surprised she loved it.

Game-changer seems to me to be one of the most overused critical terms anyway, to the point where it has become virtually meaningless. I really don't care if a movie is a game-changer or not -- that's always speculation anyway, and it isn't going to be proved until far down the line, if ever. I just care if something is good.

That being said, I don't think just the fact that Marvel put a bunch of franchises together in one movie makes Avengers a game changer. Is everyone going to start combining franchises now? I'm sure some will try but I'm at a loss to think of what properties it would even make sense with outside of the comic book realm, and it's highly unlikely to happen with DC any time soon.

A B+ from Jett on BOF:

It is a game changer. It just doesn't change the game in a way they like.

- a shared universe
- the coming together of multiple franchises
- spectacular action sequences that have the characters in all their iconic glory
- a real comicbook universe that embraces and uplifts the genre rather than scorning it

There will come a time when they will realise how much the game has changed.

Also, they should really cut a new critics TV spot that highlights all the new reviews coming in. The list of major outlets that have reacted positively is pretty mindboggling.
