Cap's film came out a week ago, and Thor's made 500+ mil.
Nope, Thor made 450M, which is indeed pretty good.

It's impressive how you love to downplay everything 'marvel'.
If we're talking about the same alternate reality here, (SPIRAL?) Cap put on quite an impressive fight clinic on Thor and actually was about to slice his head off with his shield, 'till he was distracted by Balder's death cry, and was subsequently disintegrated by the Odinforce. That's not what happened. All of them took on king Thor, and Thor killed the in the end.
Anyway, cap shouldn't be able to take down hulk, even if he's ''weakened''.
Guys like Thor and Hulk are way beyond his league.

Nice try, but I find the Marvel vs DC debate more tedious than anyone on this entire site. I call all the films as i see them and maintain my original point - that kind of budget is a risk given the performance of the previous films and their highly overlapping fanbase. It's not even a criticsm.
I just realized something.
Remember the Iron Man 2 S.H.I.E.L.D Data Vault?

Do you think, now that Cap and Thor are out, it's been updated?
Ah. Yeah just leafed thru it. I dunno, about Thor just standing there so much as it was just the rapidness of Steve's attack. Otherwise, Thor wouldn't have been taken off his feet and laid out prone in the "Baron Blood" position. But, yeah, that was actually a cool, (but painful) moment seeing Cap and a portion of the Shield get blasted away.It was the reigning after Thor had battled several heroes, killed both hulk and thing and lost and arm. Not to mention the balder had a blade pointed to his son Magnir. Thor just stood the there while cap took the opportunity and punished him. After balder died, Thor grabbed cap by the neck and could've broken it, but blasted him instead.

I started to dig Magni as heir to Mjolnir.
I wish we could've seen more of him. Maybe with Gillen writing JIM now, since he will explore a lot of Norse myth.Sadly it hasn't been updated .
To play Devil's Advocate - the same people love Iron Man, Thor and Cap - and apparently the latter two significantly less if box office is anything to go by.
I think Avengers will make just about enough money to justify this kind of budget (though one wonders how it could be that high) but there's no denying this is a big risk by Marvel given it might not make a lot more than the average Iron Man movie.
Both IM films made over 300M, I really don't see the risk. The presence of SLJ, Downey and now Renner, who with his oscar nomination is quickly becoming a top A list actor.
Well, I think it's definitely risky, that's just the nature of blockbuster movies of this type. But this is all-in time for marvel studios. They didn't come this far to start getting timid now.
For The Avengers to really succeed, it needs to be bigger than the sum of its parts. It needs to feel huge. So, a big budget makes sense.
Yea, they needed to go all in for this hand. No other way to do it.

If I recall, it's the biggest superhero movie worldwide without Batman, Spider-Man, Will Smith, or Iron Man. X3 might have made more, but I don't recall.
I thought I'd post the MCU's grosses so far. Correct me if I made an error.

Harry Potter is an "overlapping" fanbase and look how much the last one has made. So is Batman, look how much more TDK made than BB. Using the amount the previous films have made is stupid, there are MANY things that go into the success of a film. I hate when people use that overlapping fanbase crap because it makes no sense.Nice try, but I find the Marvel vs DC debate more tedious than anyone on this entire site.
