The Avengers The Avengers Post Screening Review & Discussion Thread (SPOILER FILLED) - Part 5

Saw the movie again last night.....Loved it even more! Got over the small nitpicks I had and am bumping my score to a perfect score, not the greatest movie ever made but it's def best superhero movie ever made, LOVE it! And After credit sequence just adds soooo much more for me! :D

I had people in my theater thinking that Thanos was Apocalypse.

Loved it! Like someone else said, you really felt drawn into the comics. Almost every shot of the film seemed lifted from a page of a Double Sized Annual issue! Nothing felt like it didn't belong.

Please, please, PLEASE, make sure Joss directs the sequel!

The only thing I was confused about was why Loki was so interested in the Hulk, going so far as to intentionally get captured to release him. Why would they do that? They already had the tesseract, I'm not sure what he was trying to accomplish.

Could it be to keep S.H.I.E.L.D. busy to capture the Hulk and not hunting Loki?

He wanted to seperate the heroes so they won´t form a team. With Hulk and Thor gone the two heavy hitters were out of his way.... for a time.

Wasn't this just after the scene with Selvig, Hawkeye and Loki discussing the building of the portal device? The one where they were saying it's hard to get things when SHIELD knows what you need. I'm not sure if they discussed getting something specific, but Loki using the Hulk could be just to cripple the Helicarrier and allow Loki's forces to get what they need.

Question: right before everything went down on the helicarrier a bunch of screens on the ship started flashing "VIRUS". It didn't look like anyone did anything to make that happen and it didn't appear to have any significance afterwards. Can someone explain that to me?

Tony Stark did that. He was trying to figure out S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secrets. He said that he had Jarvis working on it. I believe the virus was used to obtain the information.

Yep.
That's where JARVIS and Tony dug up the info about
SHIELD actually using the Tesseract to make weapons of mass destruction.

Ah, that's right that's right. Thanks for clearing that up.

I've noticed people saying there is no depth to this films story. I disagree.

The part in Germany, Loki's rant? Sure it can be taken as just a typical bad guy rant. But Loki does pose interesting questions. Do we, mankind, really want freedom? Is he right when he says the mad scramble for power would cause more harm than being ruled or led? If the planet was united under one banner, one ruler, would it be more peaceful? Impossible to definitively answer, but an interesting question none the less. And the old German guy standing up? Could be seen as cliche. But the fact that he was old enough to have witnessed the atrocities under Hitler just gives that a little bit more resonance.

Also, the Tesseract wasn't just a plot device, it was quite clearly a metaphor. Say we discovered a new fossil fuel, an unlimited amount of it, would it be used for the benefit of mankind? As a warm light for us to gather around? Or would the powers that be use it for more nefarious means? Like what SHIELD did?

Which brings me to another point. Nick Fury was written PERFECTLY in this. The shady, duplicitous side to him was nailed down. What he did with Coulson's cards was just... pure Nick Fury. He always does stuff like that. He's always the guy who does morally questionable things. He is that guy who is all about the means to an end.

But those things can be easily overlooked. Because the script doesn't make a big deal out of them. It doesn't ram those themes down our throats. It presents the ideas, it poses the questions, then let's us, the audience, make our own minds up. Which for me is much better and more rewarding than spoon feeding us everything.

QFT for the second time

I loved the old German guy moment. Then when Cap came in and saved him. Pure gold. Didn't see that coming. I thought he was done for. I liked the irony that Cap saved a German.

And yet, even though fury was sort of shady and whatnot, you couldnt help but root for him and love him. I thought he was really likeable

I liked that Stark had some character growth in this film, even if it was subtle. He started out as his cocky, self centered self, something that Cap zeroed in on during their argument. At the end, he had changed.
As he was confronting Loki and naming everyone that he had managed to piss off, he never mentioned himself. He put Agent Coulson in the list but not "me," as in the trailer.

Yea that was another great subtle moment that can be easily overlooked. It wasn't about him anymore.

There is just so many cool little moments like that which make a rewatch rewarding. There is plenty of things that can be missed on the first watch but picked up on in subsequent viewings.

Im i the only one that felt like, as Joss repotedly was very much responsible of much of the characters dynamics and relationship, mostly concerning Woody and Buzz, of Toy Story, that some of the relationship between Captain America and Iron man was a bit like a rewrite of Woody/Buzz? Because i got totally that vibe on my second vieving... :woot:

I mean, the dinamic was diferent, Woody was more agressive and jelous, and the cap more lost, but the whole old toy/old hero vs new toy/hero of today cant be a coincidence...

Can someone tell me if Banner was being controlled from the very beginning? BW made a comment after she got the info from Loki when they were all together in the lab about how easy it was for him to come aboard which made me think somehow Loki found him wherever he was but then that wouldn't make much sense. I know he flinched and grabbed his eyes/forehead when Loki walked in but considering he has to touch them with the staff you would assume they had met prior to that moment where he would have.

Okay, people. I just joined this group right now because it "irritates" me when I read the posts I see about the Hulk side punching Thor. This is the reason he does it - It was a "pat on the back" saying "Good fight, Thor", we killed that Leviathon....except Hulk does not know his own strength so when he gives Thor the out of the blue "Pat on the back or side punch" he obviously didn't realize his strength and THAT WAS THE JOKE. Understand? There was NO hostility between Thor and Hulk anymore at that point since they fought hard side by side to bring down that Leviathon and it was just a "Good Job" "fist bump, pat on the back, etc gesture".
Now knock it off with your over analyzed theories......
