According to whom is he a "gangsta"? Because he has been a lot more than that for a number of decades.
Am I the only one who doesn't want gangster/"gengsta" Penguin?
Is wanting a stout socialite with an affinity for birds and ties to the mobs and weapons dealings too little?
I look at Leto's Joker and I'm thinking is his appearance to do with some modern spin? Is that what it means to update the meaning of gangster?
Never mind about keeping it consistent with the status quo. I haven't seen the Joker sport his classic costume or hairstyle for donkey years now in the comics.
So, I wonder if Ayer put a modern interpretation on a character that appeared under the 40's fashion and limitations? Joker, at first, he never wore his trademark tailcoat. It was a short suit with a long jacket, and as far as we can see, he's going to be wearing that same long coat.
I mean, are the tattoos extreme? Yes, they are. But Joker is just that; extreme.
I've come to think he is whatever a writer wants him to be. He's a new Joker for a new time.
It's the same they've done with Lex. No longer is he modeled on the 80's idea of a businessmen.
Should Penguin be treat in that same way? Should he be subjected to the same level of extremities? I have no idea what a modern representation of a gangster is, nor a "gentleman of crime"...but if it's anything like what I saw in Arkham Knight...then I hope they retain more of his classic features.
