The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

Nobody, literally nobody says this if the online chatter is positive.

If it's polarized a bit with those in the know - then I'm sure general audiences have skepticism of their own.
Who's in the know that has had a polarized response to the film?

Who's in the know that has had a polarized response to the film?

Not sure, BUT.

Keep in mind, people who have seen the film are typically ones in the industry and are already on board with this film's existence. These people will skew positive.

Remember hearing WW'84 test screenings and early press screenings? Largely positive.

I'm speaking about the fact that a LOT of people still aren't over the casting of Pattinson and don't even want to give the film a shot, yet.

I'm referencing everywhere else.

It's been discussed on here in another thread. I'm not the only one noticing it.

Then let me amend my statemen., I think you’re putting too much stock on random internet comments.

Who? Who are these “lot” of people? What percentage of people? Give me a number.

WW84 was such a strange moment. Not sure how the initial responses were so glowing, I've never seen a drastic turnaround like that.

We'll see how The Batman shakes out.

If I said most everyone in the online sphere were positive and hyped about the film - we both know you wouldn't be asking for proof of any kind.

The only time someone here demands 'proof' is if someone says something negative. Funny how that works.

You wouldn't be satisfied with any answer, so let's not play that game.

Well then it’s a good thing you’re not then, isn’t?

My guy, the burden of proof is on you here. You’re making the claim that “lots” of people are already down on this movie, and I want to know what you think constitutes “a lot.”

And by the by, we have “proof” that response has been positive from reliable leakers (VA), so I’m not sure what your point is.

How is it also not on you - since you're on the other side of the fence?

I already stated my feelings were anecdotal - as are everyone's here. But the only feelings that get called into question are ones that aren't glowing with positivity.

WW84 first responses weren't positive at all !?

Does know one remember ViewerAnon saying the test screening reaction compared it to Superman 4 ?
A lot of the early reactions on social media from press who had seen it, specifically twitter, were extremely positive at first. ViewerAnon always spoke truth though

Because we already have proof that response has been universally positive, with some minor hang-ups on the third act.

See my WW'84 links above.

Look, I get it. I'm hyped, too.

But I got burned hard by the hype train of Batman V. Superman and I learned some lessons from it. Early responses =/= reception.

But that’s the thing, you posted “early” screening reactions, not test reactions. VA, who is the same guy who is saying The Batman has been loved, publicly said they were negative for WW’84.

All I'm saying is that I'm just as excited as you guys are - but I'm trying to keep my expectations realistic here, too.

Early reviews/screenings are notoriously unreliable.

And I think it's something we, as fans, should keep in mind (because we discuss reception, so it must matter to us) that there still is a large chunk of audiences that -
  1. Feel 'burnt out' of Batman. (I don't know how since it's A-OK Spider-Man has 3 reboots and 11 films in 15 years)
  2. Are against this film due to Pattinson.
  3. Don't trust DC films, in general due to the DCEU debacle.
It's good to go into a film knowing what it's up against if how well it does means anything to you as a fan.

And I think this film has a little bit of an uphill battle with audiences and I'm curious how it'll play out.

I don't doubt this guy - but you can't be demanding numbers from people as evidence contrary to your points when you yourself tout anecdotes from an early screener.

From a trusted and proven source, I’d say it carries a bit more weight.

And I’m not asking for numbers “contrary” to the test screenings. I just want a percentage of people you think are already negative about this movie like you claim.

It's literally one guy's word. I believe him partially because I want to but I'm also aware being within access of early screenings can't have net zero effect for positive bias.

The screenings ViewerAnon refers to in his tweets were not known by the public to be for THE BATMAN ahead of schedule. People in LA went in expecting an "action-adventure movie from WB releasing by 2023" and got The Batman. So it's not like superfans of the character signed up and knew what they were in for. It was cinephiles and people who sign up for advance screenings being surprised by the reveal that it was THE BATMAN, and then loving it.

ViewerAnon has a really incredible track record, so here's hoping these screening reports are similar to the final product.

I wasn't aware of any of this and I appreciate the background.

Like I said, I'm glad to be wrong.

That person has been posting the same thing for months (and yes he's the only one), but there's always someone who has to quote him. Scroll, move on, jezuz.

Apologies this has been the case, then.

I'm glass half-full by nature - and aside from me, there was also a discussion like this in the 'General' thread last week, too.

Fans like discussing hype and reception and I think the byproduct of that is that we as a community made it so stuff like 'trending' and RT reviews matter, now.

I don't think we need to be in a hype echo chamber though. It's good to hear discrepant thoughts sometimes, even if I don't personally agree.

I appreciate that - and sometimes airing out my own thoughts gets some of you here to get me into check a bit and it helps me worry less.
I was burned HARD by BvS, so I totally understand where you're coming from. That was my most anticipated movie of all time and I thought it was terrible, couldn't believe what I'd seen walking out of the theater. So I get it, but I think the "controversy" here might just be the film being unconventional for a Batman movie and not afraid to be thematically uncomfortable. If my extrapolation is right, then I personally couldn't be more excited - and the comparisons to CHINATOWN, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, ZODIAC, etc. only get me more pumped.

Anyway, I can't ****ing wait to hear Riddler's theme.
