The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

I hope we see more banter and friendship in the sequel. This version of the Alfred/Bruce relationship was too much hurt and pain.

I cringe when I think about that scene. Come on Bruce, let the man come out of the coma fully first.

lol I loved it. I had a little chuckle both times I saw it in theaters. Bruce is such a little s*** in that scene—just goes to show there’s a lot more for him to learn & growing up to do. The two still connected at the end of it. Obviously the love is there.

I think Serkis has the makings of a great Alfred, but there wasn’t enough for him to do here to prove it. Looking forward to seeing more from him.

There’s very seldom I enjoy from the Snyderverse but I preferred Jeremy Irons’ take over Serkis—I think they both have roughly the same amount of screen time? Serkis wasn’t bad by any means, but I think the movie took the character of Alfred for granted and that’s where the biggest disappointment was. I genuinely expected him to die after The Riddler’s bomb.

I think Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons are made to be Alfred whereas it isn’t such an obvious casting with Serkis. I do think with more screen time he can be a great Alfred though.

He plays a good version of a regretful failed father Alfred. Serkis was the one casting I never quite got up until the movie but I get it now. Caine is still the best Alfred, but Serkis gives a cool new take.

I am sure it will because in sequel Batman will be all about inspiring hope to city instead being vengeance and trying to almost have dying wish.
Yeah, that would be nice and positive character growth.

Andy Serkis Alfred was phenomenal in his last scene.

But overall I was pretty underwhelmed by his take.

Jeremy Iron's is honestly my favorite Alfred weirdly enough.

I do like how regretful Serkis Alfred is though.

He just needs to be fleshed out more in the sequel.

Irons was the best thing to come out of the Snyder piss take. As good as Michael Caine. Possibly better.

I really liked Irons too. A great alfred. He would of fit right in this movie as well if he wasn't already cast in the snyderverse.

I don't mind Serkis at all though, for what little we got of him.

Still one of my favorite moments in the movie. It's such an easy way to differentiate from the previous Batmen and it made him more human.

Yeah a really great moment to remind you how early it is in his career while showing he's human. (kinda lol).

Where'd you get such an HD gif from? Was that shot in one of the TV Spots/Trailers?

This movie was about him becoming a symbol of hope - he hasn’t operated as that yet and it only happened at the movie’s conclusion. He was a vigilante, now he’s a hero.

I’m assuming people mean that the sequel will have more explicit heroic elements and him being seen as a hero by the city for its entire duration.

I would like to see his struggle with it some more in the next film. I hope they don't go full post-tdkr where he'd be accepted by the entire city just yet.

They hinted at this in the film, but I'd like to see more of Batman's internal struggle with - if he wasn't doing this, would it be better off for Gotham as a whole? The Riddler really showed this argument in the interrogation scene. He's obsessed with Batman's idea, his mask, everything up to the point where he finally realizes Batman isn't on his side.

If Batman didn't exist, would Riddler? In this film's universe, I think a version of him would. But not near as theatrical.

That's why if we get Court of Owls, there's no way they'd be the only obstacle. They exist either way if Bruce becomes The Batman or not.

Caine is definitely still my favorite. That being said, I've really really loved what I've seen from Serkis take so far. Even though he seems to be more war torn than previous versions, he's still has that fatherly presence to him. I hope we see more in the sequel.

I think some elements of everything you mentioned will play a role, yeah.

I think based on the movie’s ending the vast majority should see him as the city’s protector now.

I hope they approach the “Does Batman create his rogues” theme intelligently. It’s one of my least favorite tropes along with the “But if Bruce just donated his billions the city would be a Utopia” memes. Evil, criminality and extremists would exist in-universe without him, and that overall logic just sits poorly with me. I prefer the idea that the extremism of Gotham’s conditions create pathologies in many people, some more extreme than others. Batman is an extremist, but I’m not fond of the “His rogues are a response to him” oversimplification.

I think Joker would serve as a good vehicle for that theme to be discussed, but at this point I feel like the majority of the public is likely to be on his side hopefully.

I hope they approach that well too, as sometimes it feels like they beat it over your head.

Speaking of Joker, I'm interested to see that deleted scene, it will give me the sense if I want more of him or not in this version of Batman. I agree, he's a perfect vehicle for that type of story. We got so much in this film as far as world building and different elements. It will be interesting if Reeve's decides to include Joker more. He's a great director so I do think he can juggle Joker and say something like The Court of Owls or Mr. Freeze in the same film.... Exciting times to be a Batman fan.

maybe its just me but does anyone else not want to see playboy bruce persona with Pattinson??

not that he cant do it he certainly has the charm and charisma to pull it off but i feel it would be too jarring to from reclusive disheveled bruce to public ladies man at cocktail parties mingling with elites

i feel a more humanitarian/philanthropist bruce with fundraisers, donating and meeting with community leaders to help gotham would work much better and probably much more relatable

I absolutely don't want Playboy Bruce. I much prefer what you've suggested

i think the best decision would be a philanthropist, suave Bruce Wayne and only at times a wacky drunk playboy.

It's important that Bruce stops being a recluse because it throws people off the scent of his activities. And Bruce Wayne can do things that Batman cannot.
