The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

Don't care for the look at all, but I do care for the performance and how the character is used..

It’s not an excuse when Matt Reeves has explicitly stated this is not the joker. He’s someone that is very likely going to be the joker but it’s obvious it will likely result in him transforming physically into a more traditional take.

it’s like how people still don’t understand how Bruce Wayne being the way he is, is somehow a bad take on the character that ignores everything Bruce Wayne is portrayed to be normally. Watching the film it’s very clear they have fully acknowledged every aspect of classic Bruce Wayne in order to do the opposite of it as a point.

I doubt he’ll ever look like your fully classic Joker but the ‘well it’s an early look’ has far more validity in a film series where the director regularly talks about how that’s the point of the villains.

Okay, I love Matt Reeves - but the amount of times he's relied on this excuse is getting old.

The "_____ is not YET the ______ we all know and love yet" schtick is wearing thin, for me.

And it's not going to keep me from critiquing something.

it's blowing up on twitter. Reeves may have free reign but this shows joker is a force. If Reeves is not planning on including joker in the sequel (im sure he does tho), WB will beg him to do it.

I think Joker was ALWAYS in Matt's plans ever since he first started writing this film. I think he believes Joker will be the overarching trilogy major villain, Batman's arch nemesis, as he is intended to be. He most likely wants to serve justice to the character.

I don't think it matters how much it blows up or if WB wants it, I just think it was always Matt's intention to dive into this character

My big issue with Reeves is that he's getting applauded for not wasting our time showing the origin stories of these characters...but at the same time he's not giving us formed characters, either.

Why not just give us an origin at that point?

"She's not yet Catwoman in this film!"
"Barry isn't The Joker yet!"
"Batman is still building things and figuring things out!"
"Riddler isn't quite Riddler yet."

One of the big appealing aspects of skipping all these origins is so we can just have these characters finally.

But we're not getting the origins and we're not getting the villains/characters we love, either.

It's a little frustrating, for me.

Catwoman and Riddler are both incredibly clearly their classic selves with just minor details changed for future growth so the characters have somewhere to go in sequels.

Origin stories on film are a go to because they offer a chance for dynamic growth because these characters can easily feel static. This is a clear middle ground.

Heath's performance is going to loom over all Joker portrayals forever. Joaquin is the only one who didn't even try to take something from it, but that's to be expected from a top-tier actor with that self confidence.

Literally everyone else has aped something from Heath, and it's frustrating how transparent it always is! :funny:
And rightfully so haha. A testament to a legendary performance and interpretation.

Well I'm really late obviously but I just watched the deleted Joker scene......

Was not prepared for Jokers look at all he doesn't even look like a demented clown he looks like a ****in disfigured monster !

Not sure how I feel about it yet but I'll say this it the most unquie and disturbing joker look since Ledgers for me.

Barry Keoangh performance as Joker is really really good in my opinion.

His laugh body language and tone really feels like a man who finds psychological torture funny.

His laughs don't feel calculated or prepared they feel like out burst but not in the way Phoenix did it more sinster.

I can't for life me understand half of his dialogue for some reason it sounds like he's mumbling to me but the bits I heard felt like classic joker to me.

Overall I'm way more impressed than I was with brief glimpse we got of him the actual film.

I'm just going by what he says and according to him, they're not yet themselves yet.

Absolutely amazing scene. I do think it’s better as a deleted scene but I think this scene was better than the prison interrogation scene with the Riddler. It’s clearly exploding as I thought it would with people clamoring for the Joker.

He’s clearly adding in the vibes of someone who can’t close his mouth… like how Heath licked his lips.

I like the weird inflictions and ghostly aspect to his voice.

I really like how Robert Pattinson Batman interacts with this joker so far.

He seems almost afraid of him.

Much better than Ben Affleck and Jared Leto s dynamic.

His voice seems way to much like it's copying Heath Ledger's without being understandble.

I could hardly understand his words.

Also I laughed when they showed his mouth just felt taking Heath Ledger's scar's and going even more extreme disappointing in my opinion.

If this ends up being a trilogy then really all you're being is just impatient. Let's see where of all this goes first.

It's a great scene, but I see why it's cut. It's told in a pretty straightforward (albeit very well done) way to the point where it's too much for the context of everything else going on in a three hour movie. It plays as a great little short film. I like Keogan more here. I like the diseased look and like how the white skin comes from the deformity. This is a refreshing take on Joker where they have a pre-stablished relationship, and it contributes to cool world building, but I like how instead of being about the Joker, it's about the movie's themes and Batman himself. Joker in this context being used to prop these up and make Riddler more threatening is great.

I'm sick of the Joker, but if this movie needed that scene, this could have been a cool and exciting way to introduce him and would have been a pleasant surprise for moviegoers.

Catwoman and Riddler are already so deep into superhero/villain tropes and imagery they’re pretty damn removed from straight up origin territory. Are things clearly left open for future development, especially with Selina who will obviously be a near co lead of the franchise? Absolutely! But they’re not that far off from their classic selves.

Thats exactly what I was going to say! It seems like their previous confrontation has made Batman vary wary of this Joker. He definitely did some ****ed up stuff.

good call to cut it, it would make the 2nd and 3rd act weaker and just spells out the riddler=batman dynamic. But the scene itself is incredible in my opinion. Everything works. Rob's and Barry's acting, framing, cinematography, laugh and the look. one thing i'm iffy is the hair, but i think it's supposed to look like it's growing back out so i don't mind.

Serialization is great, I would drop Batman as a film franchise for a truly great TV series without skipping a beat. The line between the two is so blurred now anyway.

It stands on its own really well. Pretending like it isn’t a piece of a broader, serialized story is pointless when it so clearly is.

I really adore the dynamic this scene portends for Batman and Joker. Not really something we've seen in live action before. And the more I see the details of his face, the more I like it. And again, that mouth.

Not trying to take away anything from the dynamic and my praise still stands but in my opinion we have seen this before.

It feels like Bale and Ledger's dynamic.

It's great but nothing to new in my opinion.
