The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

I went to check to see how the DCEULeaks Reddit reacted to this scene and seems like it was universally loved with some saying they are now fine with the Joker in this universe.

Really shocking considering a lot of people on that Reddit were against the Joker being used again. Shows how well Matt Reeves is doing.

FIlm TT is digging it. I expected reaction would be a bit more mixed but it's more on the positive side

Matt Reeves post already got nearly 45k likes in only 2 hours since posted - thats his highest inj a very long time, even given movie debut itself

Joker is a powerhouse by himself, indeed

Part of the reason this may go over well is because Joker being an Arkham inmate from the beginning changes the dynamic quite a lot.

The suspense and anticipation will build up for people, imagining what he did to get in there and what he’ll do if he gets out. It’s also a decent answer to the Joker fatigue to maybe not have him front and center immediately.

It resembles Bale and Ledger because they are literally the same characters. Different takes, but there's always going to be significant overlap.

Design aside this feels like the first time we've seen the Joker from the comics and his dynamic with Batman since 2008.

It doesn't feel "oh another joker" it feels like The Joker has returned.

I hadn’t expected to feel this way, I was pretty opposed to Joker being used so early, but since Leto was Leto and Fleck never feels like the Joker to me this really did give me a rush like we hadn’t seen him since Heath.

i dunno how one can look at this interaction and say this is bale-ledger lol. Batman looks straight up afraid of him.

It's not a flaw or criticism but it definitely feels like there dynamic to me.

He's literally disturbing to look at. It makes you feel uncomfortable. And 90% of the shots in this scene were vague shots. Imagine this character out in the streets of Gotham, in his full realized Joker look, with Greig Fraser's lighting... I can't wait for those days

This is the first Joker where I feel genuine fear watching him. His little mannerisms and childlike behaviour. I wonder how he kills his victims and what kind of serial killer he was

ending part of the scene is great - how joker tries to get under batman's skin.
he knows deep down batman has this urge to want to kill.

plus that laugh.

and yup, it feels like that comic book batman / joker dynamic that we haven't gotten since 2008.

Also because there both essentially taking from the comics dynamic as twisted lovers as well.

This is a good thing in my opinion.

Gives me Dark Knight Two Face vibes.

Not really distributing in my opinion more like over the top.

He doesn't even look white to me or vaguely like a clown.

I really don't like this design.

The patches of green hair look awful to me.

Actually I take back the Two Face comparison he looks like Green Goblin from the Amazing Spiderman 2.

He's a prisoner. Not surprised he doesn't look like a clown. He isn't even the fully realized Joker yet. We're going to see him become the Joker. I bet in the Arkham series

Yeah, not feeling this scene at all. Thankfully it was cut. Don’t like the look or performance (#mumblecore). I’m sure Barrry can do better and the team in the design for the sequel since everything in the actual movie was spot-on. Except this.

I talked a lot of **** about how Arkham being a Joker series would be lame but if it were to be about Joker and Riddler with these two great leads…

Really admire the guts on Reeves and co for going with a design that would obviously be super controversial.

Uhh what ?

He already has his realtionship with Batman.

His personality is spot on.

He already is the Joker.

Under no circumstances should Joker ever not look like a clown with all these elements in place.

i can imagine this version of joker will cake on face powder in a flimsy attempt to "cover" his scars and look more like a clown when he's out of arkham.

he looks like someone who's probably in a lot of physical pain from all that scarring /burns, but his hatred and insanity powers him on.

I think it's easier to go for the zombie look than to try make the clown look fit this dark horror like world.

Not really guts in my opinion just..... Unimaginative.

If he's not "The Joker" yet, I wonder what he's known as? Who does Batman ask to see when he goes to Arkham? Also, tbh I don't quite get the whole aspect of how he's able to just walk into Arkham and get access to inmates either, haha. Gordon put in the good word with him with security over there? Not hugely important, but considering how much attention they draw to stuff like Batman being let on crime scenes and not being welcomed there by anyone but Gordon, I wouldn't have minded an explanation there.

I like what they’re going for. It feels like a return to Joker’s roots in a way.

The Joker has become too cool and edgy in many modern iterations, he’s as cool as Batman. A Joker that’s truly terrifying, disturbed and that Batman fears in a way is a welcome change. He’s supposed to be repulsive and off-putting.

I didn’t realize it until now, but I like the idea of a Joker that people don’t want to dress up as for Halloween.

So throwing away Jokers entire theme and look and making him Green Goblin zombie rip off is the way to do that ?

Out of curiosity - when do you think this scene was supposed to appear in the movie?

My big issue with Reeves is that he's getting applauded for not wasting our time showing the origin stories of these characters...but at the same time he's not giving us formed characters, either.

Why not just give us an origin at that point?

"She's not yet Catwoman in this film!"
"Barry isn't The Joker yet!"
"Batman is still building things and figuring things out!"
"Riddler isn't quite Riddler yet."

One of the big appealing aspects of skipping all these origins is so we can just have these characters finally.

But we're not getting the origins and we're not getting the villains/characters we love, either.

It's a little frustrating, for me.

I thought the only origin he isn't showing is Batman? I haven't watched his interviews for the press tour yet but I'm pretty sure I've heard Matt Reeves say in the past that all of the villains are getting origin stories.

What makes you say we're skipping origins for all of the characters? Is it because Catwoman/Riddler didn't become the characters we know/love by the end of this movie?

I really don’t think that’s what they’ve done.

The Joker looking exactly like a clown is one popular way they’ve portrayed him, but disfigurement has also popped up from time to time. Given what Reeves has done with this universe I’m willing to entertain that this works.
