Sci-Fi The Battlestar Galactica and Caprica Discussion Thread - Part 1

Maybe they got scared with Carprica's low ratings and tried to make it as much like the original (remake) as possible?

I don't think it was the setting that was the problem with Caprica's low ratings... it was the poor planning. The two subjects really have very little to do with each other.

I guess they'll reuse the old under costumes and flightsuits, with extra stuff on the outside. After reviewing the relevant bits in Razor, seems right.

Caprica's downfall was due to mental ******ation on the part of the suits just like most great shows downfalls in this country. They totally mismarketed it and the extra long break didn't help at all. I'm barely even excited for Blood and Chrome, Caprica was such a breath of fresh air and something so different that just more dogfights and military **** aint gonna do it for me. I mean if the story has a good amount of depth like its predecessors then I'm in but yea it needs to be a damn good story first

Yeah, same here. I'll give it a chance regardless, but if it's essentially just the action of BSG with none of the emotional depth, I'm out.

I kinda want this shirt:

Colonel Waldorf and Admiral Statler. I love it. :funny:

Thanks Spectre it looks awesome.

So I finished the series recently, it was definitely a worthwhile endeavor, but I was a bit disappointed in the end. Not really in the quality or anything, but in the same way I was disappointed in LOST. There's just so much left open and unanswered and I don't get it. Is it possible to have a show with supernatural mystery and actually explain the mysteries? Like, why introduce something you don't plan on explaining? But it's okay, it doesn't ruin the show or anything, it's just disappointing. Still a great series. And the finale was great. So exciting and action packed, and I loved the ending with All Along the Watchtower showing today's future Cylons.

Some things that still bug me:

- What was up with Starbuck's return? Was she actually there? Was it her or just a memory brought back through divine intervention?
- How was Kara leading them to their death? Why did the hybrids say that?
- Is our Earth the first one or the second one?
- Wouldn't they notice that Earth 2 has the same geographical layout as Earth 1? And why would that happen?
- Why was is that Lee would never see Adama again? Did he just leave and chill with Rosslin's grave for the rest of her life?
- This one I'm pretty sure I understand, but was Gaius and Caprica's visions "God" the whole time?

Regardless of the unknown, it was still a great story with great characters, and that's what it's all about, right?

I'll never understand why people demand answers to every little thing. What's wrong with a little mystery?

Anyway...

- What was up with Starbuck's return? Was she actually there? Was it her or just a memory brought back through divine intervention?

I felt that it was pretty clear she was actually there. The other characters talked to and interacted with her often. Did god bring her back to fulfill her destiny? Was she a ghost or a spirit of some sort? Was it some kind of Cylon trick? I have no idea. Sometimes things happen that can't easily be explained.

- How was Kara leading them to their death? Why did the hybrids say that?

No idea. My personal theory is what they were implying was that she would lead them (the original humans) to Earth where they would eventually die out or be bred into the new humans (us). Thus they would cease to exist.

- Is our Earth the first one or the second one?

Obviously the second one. You can clearly see Africa and other continents. Not to mention you see modern day New York at the end. The first Earth was the "real" Earth from their history and lore.

- Wouldn't they notice that Earth 2 has the same geographical layout as Earth 1? And why would that happen?

It didn't. I'm pretty sure you never actually get a clear shot of the landmasses on the first Earth.

- Why was is that Lee would never see Adama again? Did he just leave and chill with Rosslin's grave for the rest of her life?

I think it's implied that Adama built a cabin for Laura like he promised. I guess you can follow the narrative logic and assume that he lived there until the end of his days.

- This one I'm pretty sure I understand, but was Gaius and Caprica's visions "God" the whole time?

Well, at the end of the finale those two "spirits" for lack of a better word refer to god as another separate entity, so I would have to say no.

Regardless of the unknown, it was still a great story with great characters, and that's what it's all about, right?

Indeed and agreed.

I like to think of Head Six and Head Gaius as Angels because Head Six at one point just flat out says that she is an Angel to Gaius.

Yeah but that was pretty explicit and ona 2nd 3rd and 4th viewing I realized that yes, she is just that.

I saw it kind of as "God" guiding them in the form of who they loved most in life.

Also I just started watching Caprica, and I think it kind of goes along with explaining Stabuck's return a little more. Zoey was able to make a complete copy of herself in the virtual world. Her copy feels that she IS Zoey. Perhaps Starbuck was a copy of herself created by "God" to live in the Universe. Both are the same idea, just in different "worlds".

It didn't. I'm pretty sure you never actually get a clear shot of the landmasses on the first Earth.

I'm pretty sure they showed North America on the first Earth.

Also, what was the significance of the song? Was it just a song the creators liked and used as an Earth song the 4 all remembered? In that case, wouldn't our Earth be the first Earth, as that song was remembered from it. Or is it that the song was created again on Earth 2?

EDIT: Or is the song like a meme that pops up in almost every human civilization. There is always a musician who figures it out. Kara's father, Bob Dylan, etc.?

If you're talking about that shot of Earth at the end of season 3, that was Earth 2.

When they arrive at the original Earth, to misdirect the audience who have already seen Earth 2, they never really gave you a good look at the layout of the land masses. Until they stumble upon our Earth, you're meant to assume that original Earth is it.

That's why that scene when they land on OG Earth is so devastating. Not only because you're thinking, "Wow, we really ****ed up." But more because "Earth" is what these people have put all of their hopes and dreams into and it was taken away from them.

The significance was that it contained the location of the new Earth. Was this all part of some divine plan or was it just coincidence? Who's to say?

Well, I think it was Anders who wrote it originally on the first Earth, but you've got the right idea. I believe the official explanation was that Bob Dylan and Anders pulled from the same "cosmic inspiration" or something to that effect.

Okay cool.

I just finished the Caprica pilot and I really like it. Much more than I expected, everything I saw from it prior had me thinking it was pretty subpar but the story is really interesting and it's a great BSG history lesson. Joseph Adama is a G, just like his son. I love the themes of what makes a person a person and a machine with a human mind. It's a mistake I fear we as a race are making right now. Maybe someday we'll have to face out own Cylons.

Caprica is great, but it's a very slow burn in the beginning.

I seriously doubt we'll ever have a robot revolution of our own. :funny:

I just saw the three hour pilot again. Damn its good. But sadly it drags a little in the ending.

ANyways, anyone got a date when Blood & Chrome is due? Is it this spring or fall or when?!

Sweet Jesus.... :wow:

GREAT t-shirt, whoever thought of it is a genius (although I do figure Tigh and Adama have the greatest love on the show).

Just watching the 3 ep arc after Boomer shoots Adama, very good stuff, nice to be able to see Tigh to the fore for once. He rather reminds me of Sherman and Grant in the American Civil war, useless at politics and drunken failures in civilian life but superb in battle, knows exactly what to do and get's it done.
Meanwhile Baltar on Kobol is one of the greatest characters ever, we genuinely can't decide if he's a hero or a villain and neither can he
