The Rise of Skywalker The Big Question (Last Jedi Spoilers)

I think it’s extrmely likely he will show up as a Force Ghost. It may have been a cameo originally, but with Carrie’s passing they may make it more than that.

The question for me is, does he appear to Rey, Kylo, or both?

I have a feeling him and Yoda will Rey and the resistance at some point though.

he will be ghost In IX.this is abrams we are talking about.hardly a question. bigger question is does abrams stick to rey being a nobody and ren being end of skywalker line.

Does Luke turn up in Episode IX? I figured it was a foregone conclusion, but by the way some fans are acting you'd think we have seen the last of him.

So what do you think? Will Luke show up to offer Rey a helping hand in Episode IX?

Maybe as a force ghost, like Ben did to luke.. But not alive.

One of my big fan speculations was that we'd find Dark Side Force ghosts as well, and Vader would speak to Ben. I'm still kind of hopeful for that. Maybe Force Ghosts will serve a larger purpose in the end of this new trilogy. I find it to be one of the most unexplored aspects of the whole series.

From the chatter i've seen on a # of starwars specific boards, the whole 'force ghost' thing is specific to those of the light side.. Darksiders can't do it..

Yeah, I know. I think generally speaking, dark side users work to prolong their physical life whereas light side users work to maintain their identity after shuffling off their physical form.
I thought they were going there with Kylo's discussions with Vader's mask. I was hoping it might speak back at some point. I like the idea of Vader being a formed personality just as much as Anakin. Unfortunately not going to happen.

I'm hoping that JJ can redeem Luke a bit as a force ghost in this next one.

He already died as a loser who never left his little island for the whole new trilogy. You can't redeem that trash treatment at all

I don't think this is really "The Big Question" of Episode IX, but yeah.. I'm sure he'll come back as a Force Ghost. Hopefully he lays down some Force wisdom... because that didn't happen enough in TLJ for me.

You realize that Vader already returned as a light side Force ghost right? His redemption was the culmination of the entire original trilogy (aside from the empire being defeated). If he returned as a dark side force ghost it'd be as big a slap in the face to the original trilogy as the treatment of Luke has been

Yeah of course. I was suggesting that maybe they could exist at the same time. Anakin redeemed himself and went back to the light side, and became a force ghost. However, I was thinking that Kylo might be able to tap into Vader's spirit, and bring him back to talk to him. It's not like Anakin's force ghost transforms into Vaders; it'd be that they both exist, because they were essentially two people. It was just speculation on my part and something I thought could be cool.

Ben communicating with Vader could be done through any kind of Sith maguffin really. Could be fun. It would be interesting to see him talk to a reformed Anakin as well.

His metal arm didn't clunk to the ground when he disappeared sooo... I'm still saying he transported to a nudist colony. :o

^ Hadn't thought about the arm. Interesting catch.

Guessing Rey will read the texts. Luke will appear as a force ghost or just in voice-over.

I can't see the New Order following Kylo though. He's just to childish in his rants. Wondering if he'll have fallen from grace to start the film and begin searching for something else now that Snoke isn't around and the Order has abandoned him.

He also said TLJ was an all-time great

When there is a gun to your wallet, you'll say anything.

As per Luke? I'm sure he'll show up for a bit at the start. So what? Obi-wan showed up at the start and end of ROTJ. At least Obi-wan got to spill the beans about his Surprise Sister. Or was that Yoda? God... been so long since I've seen ROTJ lolz.

But Luke as a pontificating Force Ghost is one of the most underwhelming uses of Luke I can imagine.

I remember the wonder I had when Old Ben Kenobi promised to be more powerful than ever in death as Darth Vader struck him down. A ghost sat on a log and addressing plot holes was a pretty disappointing conclusion. As Luke made similar promises to Kylo Ren, I hope we get Luke's return in a more significant manner.

Pairing Luke and Kylo could be a really interesting dynamic. It would be a solid replacement for the Rey/Kylo bond in TLJ, and Driver and Hamill playing off each other would be great fun.

Money down on that being something pretty likely to happen. Watching TLJ for the first time I never got the sense that was the end for Luke. Life beyond death and all that jazz, and being Luke he'll probably be more than your regular ghost.

I agree. He had all those years to read the Jedi texts as well, who knows what he found in there.

They're probably going to try and figure out a way to have Luke do a lot of the things that they were planning to have Leia do.

I doubt it. The incel neckbeards got mad enough at ghost Yoda hitting Luke with a stick. They'll be out rioting if force ghost Luke did anything more than that. Force ghosts are only allowed to sit on logs.

Easy retorts for those dip**** types, though: ghost-Obi sat down next to Luke in ESB on a log or tree root or whatever.

The environment's been tangible in some sense or another to force-ghosts since 1980. We don't know the rules of ghosts as far as the "I cannot interfere". For all we know that's just in combat against actual people, and that alone. But we've seen them as interacting with the physical environment before.

Blame Kershner! That SW-disrespecting **** bastard! :oldrazz:

But seriously, don't listen to those types, Wampa. They've infected all of this to such a point that they're really trying to ruin it for everybody.

He did become more powerful. The fact that his spirit lives after death means he became invulnerable, which is something Vader was not.

I do agree that Ob-Wan's scene in ROTJ was kind of disappointing, I prefer the more mystical and mysterious ghost in ESB.

Obi-Wan creating an illusion of his ghost sitting on a log is NOT interacting with the physical world. It's simply an illusion that appears to be sitting on a tree branch.

Think of it like a projector. You could take a picture of someone and project it against a wall. If you tilt the projector up, you could make it look like they're standing on a box or something. You couldn't use the projection to physically touch someone.

I just watched the scene, there's nothing at all to indicate a physical presence. The log doesn't even jiggle when he sits down on it.

Also, I don't think a lot of people got mad because Yoda bopped Luke in the face. People were mad because Yoda burnt down a tree. I mean, why doesn't he just show up and strike Kylo Ren with a bolt of lightning?

None of which is established in the movies. It's a blank slate, no rules are laid out other than Obi can't "interfere" when Luke confronts Vader. That could mean a dozen different things.

The Force guides the very laws & destiny of the real world in-universe. Force ghosts mean you've attained a level of enlightenment where you're retaining personality and agency to influence post-death once you're a part of the Force.

We figured just verbally until Yoda lit a bunch of **** on fire, yes. But that doesn't contradict a damn thing that's come before, because aside from knowing Luke was on his own in taking on Vader we have jack-all in the way of knowing what a ghost is and is not capable of. It's never been addressed, we spend time with ghosts for, what, two minutes or so in the OT?

Broaden your thinking, young grasshopper.

"Strike me down and I'll become a ghost" is far less inspiring for good reason. I agree though it was pretty nicely done in Empire.

I'm cool with TLJ Yoda and any potential Force Ghost antics. Some times people mistake progress for breaking canon, and who wants so many rules for magic anyway?

Good lord.

Um, that's Return of the Jedi.
