The Dark Knight Rises The Box Office Thread

Yeah but not $300 million worth.
You also have to consider RDJ and Sam Jackson's salary. Maybe all the restrained budgets of the individual films compensated for this.

I thought I'd pose this question after having a discussion in the Avengers forum. How many genuinely give a damn if Rises matches or even comes close to TDK box office numbers? I look back and think not once did I ever think a Batman film could make the kind of money that TDK did, I always thought of it a simply a bonus to what was already a great film. In turn I'm really not fussed about how much money Rises makes, I know it's guaranteed a crap load of cash but I'm more concerned with whether the final product matches it's predecessor in terms of story and quality. Anyone else feel the same?

I think this issue was more relevant with Batman Begins. After that Joker card was revealed, everyone wanted a sequel. Due to the toxic word of mouth for Batman & Robin as well as a poor marketing campaign by WB, Begins did not have a very big opening. It had to scratch and claw its way to $200m domestic. The fans who wanted a sequel had to hope the thing pulled off a leggy box office run because it was definitely not locked for a sequel after opening weekend. In the case of TDK/TDKR, it's irrelevant. TDK's opening weekend guaranteed a sequel. TDKR is the conclusion of a trilogy so who gives a crap about sequels at this point?

True, I'm really hoping that Marvel finally has some balls to do something epic instead of playing it safe. Looks like we might finally get that.

Well that begs the question what did they spend $300 million on.

alot of CGI... that cost money as its labourous and expensive... plus they have to pay the big name stars... well thinking about it, the only big name they have right now is RDJ... the rest come cheap... so must be CGI.

Actually, 220-250 million is probably right *for the production budget.* Remember, the marketing budget is usually counted separately.

Definitely agree.

And none of that 'oh, Marvel Studios is taking risks -- The Avengers is proof of that' crap that people are always trying to constitute.

Every film released post-Iron Man & Incredible Hulk hasn't been memorable to me. Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America were C-/C+ movies, in my opinion. I blame the cookie cutter formula that Marvel Studios employs.

Quite frankly, after reading about what Jon F stated, in regards to the direction he wanted to take Iron Man 2 in, I was surprised. I honestly thought Jon got lazy with the legwork. Turns out, Marvel Studios was micromanaging.

Not surprising though, I mean, Marvel Studios did manage to piss off great actors in Norton, Portman and Rourke.

I don't see the dark knight Rises making over 530 million domestic i see it making over 450 million dollars and over 900 million world wide.

Just for reference: Hunger Games is expected to surpass $125 mil domestically this weekend. Final estimation isn't in yet because Lionsgate is still trying to buy more screens to facilitate demand.

I'm gonna venture $140 mil domestic $250 mil international (since it's not going to be available in Asia this weekend)

It really deserves it. Well done.

I predict TDKR coming in at around a $160-170 opening weekend.

The Hunger Games has an opening weekend estimate of 155m. That's potentially more than the Avengers will get, which is astonishing.

This may mean nothing to TDKR's prospects, but there's no doubt that the 2012 has been a boom time for cinema going so far.

Good. Last year didn't look so good and the biz needs a big year.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that TDKR and The Avengers have the same domestic BO opening weekend take give or take one of two mil.

Lot of potential for blockbusters this year.

Saw it last night on IMAX, and I loved it! By far my favorite movie this year, and maybe even last year too. It really put the last few Harry Potters to shame, and almost all superhero movies.

I wouldn't be surprised if it took Avengers and Spiderman. Though, I'm expecting good things from everyone this year.

I really hope TASM makes good money this year. I missed spidey on the big screen.

Agreed. I think it will do well though, especiall its first week.

Besides one other minor film opening that week, it has the whole week to itself.

It'll do fine.

Probably not as good as Hunger Games and the big two, though.

Here's the list I posted in another thread. Unless I missed one these are the top contenders for the year. TDKR shouldn't have any issue being in the top 3 IMO

The Hunger Games

Breaking Dawn Part 2

The Avengers

The Amazing Spider-Man

The Dark Knight Rises

The Hobbit Part 1 (how does this one work since most of the BO revenue will come in 2013?)

Brave

Prometheus

I think the Hobbit will count for 2012 B.O's but it might be both.

Check how they did it for Avatar's box office.

Well considering that TASM is a part of the "Big 3", I think it should do well, even its # 3 to The Avengers and TDKR, given if they rake in nearly as much as people are projecting.

TBH, I haven't seen much buzz for Avengers and TDKR. The GA definitely knows of them and are excited but I don't see that many constantly buzzing about them like other films.

Hell, I know friends of mine(GA members) who talk about TASM, Hunger Games, and Twilight more than those and in that order.

In comparison, most of the people I've shown or I know who have seen the TDKR and TASM trailers, almost all were moreso hyped for TASM than TDKR.

They think TDKR will still be epic, but they weren't as instantly excited.

I'm definitely feeling TDKR for the billion club this year. Although wouldn't really be surprised if it fell slightly short of it.

Oh please, Portman was just a complete rumor that was completely debunked. Otherwise, why is Portman on the casting call for Thor 2?

The Avengers just had a great trailer and TDKR's marketing hasn't really begun yet because the movie's still far away and it'd be a waste of money.

TASM's the one that should be worried now. Even on the internet, general interest in it is muted. The origin story angle is putting many off. On non superhero film sites the reaction I saw wasn't great, and I say that as someone who wants it to do well. It's going to have to have an advertising blitz in the 2 months before it's released to improve its perception.

This, the one to worry about at this moment is TASM.
