The Catwoman/Selina Kyle Casting Thread - Part 1

Paula Patton might be my favorite right now! It's changing all the time . But a poc as Catwoman just sounds right. I'm not down with racebending on all characters, but it just works with Catwoman

Worked for Eartha Kitt (as far as well-received, we don't talk about that other one), so audiences would probably be fine with a color Catwoman.

Indeed.

Hm, Olivia Munn never came to mind, though it seems she fits the type... probably because I still see her as a television presenter, primarily.

Olivia Munn actually seems like she'd be capable of tackling a role like this, which I never thought I'd say. But I'm not sure if her having portrayed Psylocke would be an area of conflict. Then again, it's not like Singer gave her a hell of a lot to be remembered by in said role.

I think it's up her alley to play such character, but, again, I'm not very familiar with her acting skills. From the top of my head, I only remember her from "X-Men: Apocalypse" and some horror film, whose name escapes me right now. But, yeah, I'm not sure how it would work with her being in Fox's X-Men universe right now, though it does seem she's bound to be one of many underused characters there, so perhaps they wouldn't care.

Anyway, if Snyder had any hand in "Gotham City Sirens", I wouldn't be surprised if they considered their Wonder Woman choices, Olga Kurylenko and Elodie Yung for the role as well, given that there was already a Catwomanish vibe to the character in that museum scene from BvS.

Yung's got Elektra so...

I kinda like Kurykenko, though.

Oh, yeah. I forgot about "Daredevil". Yung's definitely out of the option then.

Are you thinking of Deliver Us From Evil? She played Eric Bana's girlfriend/wife (can't remember, haha) in that and I thought she gave a pretty palpable performance.

But yeah, I think Munn could still have a chance based on how underused she was in XMA & likely will be going forward. Might as well give her something she can actually sink her teeth into.

Why do you need colour Catwoman? Keep her the way she is in comics. Not need to change for no reason.

We've gotten a woman of color as Catwoman a couple times now and no one had a problem with it. Some characters lend themselves more to racebeding than others.

Paula Patton would be ****ing awesome

I'm in favor of a woman of color as Catwoman because Poison Ivy should remain a ginger and Harley is Caucasian. There's nothing wrong with the three leads being white, but I think a little diversity would be awesome!

Three Batman characters that lend themselves the most to racebending imo are Catwoman, Mr Freeze and Two Face

For those I am leaning towards Paula Patton, Giancarlo Esposito and Denzel Washington respectively

Ah, yes that would be the one. Pretty crappy, unoriginal horror, but from what I remember she was decent in it.

Yeah, if they even intend to use the character again. They do have a record of barely scratching the surface when it comes to many of these characters.

Another actress I'd consider is Alexa Davalos. She certainly has the look; and, going by her recent performance in The Man in the High Castle, I'd say she has the acting chops as well.

Not a fan of Olivia Munn or Olivia Wilde or any other Olivia.

Yep, it was your standard "nothing special" paranormal horror movie but I was actually surprised by how good Munn was in it.

Largely because for the most part Bryan Singer has no clue how to competently handle female characters (much like David Ayer).

I think Paula Patton would be great, not because she's black, but because she's great and brings a combination of physicality and femininity which suits the role perfectly. Equally, I don't think Catwoman's ethnicity is terribly important unless her familial connections to the Mafia are to be stressed. Even if they were, Paula would not be excluded.

Hah, I recall that she had a surge in support for the role having appeared nekkid in Sherlock.

It's hard to say. She plays a pastiche of that kind of role well, which may be enough, or it may not.

What about classic Shakespearean actor Laurence Olivia?

That's what I like so much about the idea of Paula being in the role. She's already familiar with the physical demands that need to be met for such a character & she has the charm, beauty and overall skills to pull off a Selina Kyle that's nuanced across the board...assuming Ayer doesn't ruin her in GCS with a never-ending amount of gratuitous t&a shots. :o

After finishing up Batman: Telltale (going to go through it again), I've decided that I like that version of Selina a lot.

Respect to Burton/Michelle and Nolan/Anne. But I think Ben should skew a bit more comic accurate. And if Catwoman has to be "crazy" make her a kleptomaniac with a thing for art and diamonds and leave it at that.

Burton's was way too crazy, though my favorite. Anne could have been better with more screen time. Had she been introduced in an eariler film of TDKT I think she would have been the best.

Make her a vixen, a tease, all that. But have her be on Batman's side and waffling between helping him out and running away.

How about Lara Pulver?

A woman like Pulver could definitely bring the three G's--grace, grit and gravitas--to the role. She's also very easy on the eyes. Sadly, those former attributes would likely be wasted in a David Ayer-helmed GSC movie.

The worrying thing is that Ayer will be establishing the Catwoman of this universe. I doubt Ben will want too much involvement with other people's movies as he seems stressed enough as it is.

Perhaps Ben will be asked to executive produce GCS in addition to JL. That could give him more say in the selection process.
