Maybe this has been mentioned before on these boards, but I, and probably the rest of you, have noticed something about the scar on the Comedian's face in the images and trailers released so far. The scar in the film appears to only be a not very large cut along the side of his face next to his right eye, when in the graphic novel, the scar runs from the right corner of his mouth up to the area next to his right eye. Those who say that the scar the Comedian is shown with in the promos is not the scar given to him by the Vietnamese woman he knocked up during the war, the evidence for it in fact being that particular scar is in the part of the trailer which quickly shows the riot scene with him standing in the "eye" of the Owl Ship. In this scene, he is not shown wearing his "gimp" mask as in the GN but just his regular domino mask. This little detail of the Comedian's scar is very small in the scheme of the story I guess and will probably not hinder my enjoyment of the film (providing it is otherwise well done). I was just curious why they made this little change.

They probably didn't want to wast JDM's face by covering it with the gimp mask. The mask is out, as is the horrendous half-glassgow smile grin that we remember from the book.

It's the same story, just a smaller scar.

Yeah, I assumed that the scar, even though it was smaller, would have the same backstory. This was seemingly confirmed by a picture from a scene in the film, which I saw in Entertainment Weekly. In it, JDM has a bleeding cut that will become that scar (in the story), and is standing in front of a background which appears to be that Vietnamese bar, pointing his pistol at an unseen person (who I infer to be the pregnant Vietnamese woman). I didn't think they would change the backstory. I just wondered why they changed the appearance of Blake's cut/ scar.

You guys worry about silly stuff. He has the scar, now your complaining it isn't puffy enough?

I think they just changed the scar to a much smaller one than the comic so that it can be hidden by the domino mask thus still maintaining his secret identity.

Its also probably because the scar in the comic book is much more exaggerated and needed to be toned down to make it more...realistic i suppose.

Ok guys, I've changed my mind. I'm glad they changed the scar, because the "gimp" mask probably would look stupid in the film and it also would hinder JDM's ability to emote.

There's some truth in that, but I'm still a little touchy about that; I love the gimp mask and thought it was a great way to concel his identity. That and without the chealsea half grin gash, IMO it kinda removes a smile face referance that's somewhat of a big symbol in the story.

Good point KJ. Now I'm on the fence on this. Not that it really makes a huge difference to the story.

The scar seems to be of a similar size. It doesn't show up as well because A, it looks more like an actual star that healed fifteen years ago, and B, it's not a drawing.

I wondered about this too. Then it came to me that maybe they didn't want to use another semi-glasgow smile scar due to the new Joker in TDK. People who don't know the novel might see it as some sort of rip off of that type of scar that reasembles a wide grin..
