The Dark Knight The Composite Christopher Nolan Interview Thread

Backbone doesn't mean massive screentime.

I expect he will have a fair deal of screentime. More than the Joker. If you read Heath's interviews about the film he mentions how he wasn't working on the film that frequently - he would have like a couple of scenes a month to do - which is how he was able to perform at such a manic level of energy without burning himself out. I'd bet Eckhart filmed a lot more scenes than Ledger. I'd imagine screentime would rank something like this.

Bruce Wayne/Batman
Harvey Dent/Two-Face
Gordon
The Joker
Alfred
Rachel Dawes

But don't quote me on that.

Harvey's descent is the thematical backbone of the movie. Along with Bruce's inner turmoil. It's still Bruce Wayne's movie but they are doing some serious research when it comes to Dent. I love the fact that Nolan has this clear idea how to handle the characters. He knows that he can't study two villains in one movie without damaging the ending result. So he makes the Joker an absolute so that there's no need for character development etc. Now he has the Joker covered and he can concentrate on Harvey's journey. An excellent decision.

"The Joker, he sort of cuts through the film -- he's got no story arc, he's just a force of nature tearing through."

Just how I imagined it.
There's no need for a story arc. The Joker just does his thing. I'm so glad that Nolan understands this.

Don't expect a lot laughs in this summer's return to the cave. "It's a dark and complex story," Nolan said, "and the villains are dark and complex as well."

Hell yeah!

and, um, one frosty-looking governor (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

I had posted this elsewhere, but now the thread's there :)

Here's the link to the original LA Times piece: (see first post)

I would be interested in people's opinion as to who's actually going to have the bigger part in TDK - Dent/Two Face or the Joker? With the quotes above and given Nolan's tendency to go for unexplained bits, it seems more likely that Dent actually is the major player (in TDK already) - he's the much more interesting character, at least from the graphic novel background (Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Arkham Asylum).

Also, although the acid-in-the-face thing explains the scarring, as far as I know the whole psychological background of why he turns bad (well, does he really?!) is never really elaborated in the graphic novels - gaps that I'm sure Nolan loves to fill in. Any opinions? And sorry if this is somewhere out there ...

check out the harvey dent thread and ask that there. Harveys origin depends on who's writing.

Dent gets the psychological/intimate scenes and the Joker gets the big action set-pieces. When it comes to screen time...it'll propably be about fifty-fifty. Although Dent's part is going to be more essential to the overall story.

I hope not. I like Joker more than Dent, and I'd rather our main villain have more screentime...especially considering Dent will be numero uno in Batman 3. Giving Dent more screentime in this film as well as making him the major villain in B3 while Joker has less time would be quite a disappoint for me. :down

Agreed. Nolan said Harvey's the backbone of the story, not the focus. He doesn't have to have more screentime than J, he just has to be properly introduced. AND showing him as a reasonably sane man. There is plenty of time to show his other half in the third movie. :cwink:

no story arc for Joker...very clever, Mr. Nolan....very clever indeed..:hoboj:

well that sells me on the fact that Nolan can cram 3 villians into a movie and not **** it up..........RAIMI!

LAWL!

I am loving this news. I've been skeptical about what they're doing with the Joker, but as time goes on, I'm liking it more and more.

love this news;-) bruce's story continous, with joker clowning around like scarecrow did in BB and the story is more about dent becoming two face, and so the struggle for bruce on how to protect gotham, gets an other oppinion( or shall i say two)for how gotham needs to be ruled...i mean he protects all of it for what is justice in his eyes and dent will choose another perspective...or two ...i love it, it gives alot deepness in the whole thing, its about how you manage a living for everyone under the same hat....so appropriate to the main situation in our world ...wich always was a question to ask ourselves ..but so timeless and actual....it's gonna be a f****** good movie and so will the third;-)

I love that Joker won't have any origin or story arc. At best, we may just hear stories about him, but that's it. I expect Heath's performance in TDK to be simliar to that of Hopkins performance as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. While Lecter was only in the film for like 25 minutes, he dominated the screen when he was on. And like Lecter, Joker won't have any backstory, which adds more to his charecter.

Dent needs to be the backbone of this film. I just don't want him to be this guy who turns into Two-Face becomes some acid hits is face. I want him to evolve into Two-Face on his own. Then the acid pushes him over the edge.

And don't worry about Batman. He's going to be involved in all of these scenes. This is his film. Nolan and Bale specifically stated how they hated how the old Batman films weren't focused on the hero. I really don't think they stray away from this at all.

Good to know because after seeing a doggy bone Harvey in the trailer I was disappointed. I hate for him to be an afterthought and all of a sudden he's a villain. He's always been like Mr.Freeze to me that while I detest his evil ways part of me still want him to find his soul again.
