The Film Critic Associations for Boston, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles handed out their annual awards this weekend, as did the online critics from New York City. The result looks to be an interesting fight with "The Queen", "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "The Departed" the big winners so far but the spread quite even over a good range of titles.

The most notable repercussions on the awards front from these results? First off Mirren and Whitaker seem pretty much locks for best acting awards at the Oscars and Globes. I still can't understand all this negativity to DiCaprio :(

I think Djimon Hounsou was fantastic in Blood Diamond. I hope he is noticed in the best supporting actors races ad the Globes and The Oscars.

What about James Marsden for X-men 3? at least for Lead Actor certainly...

Children" On Top In San Francisco

Whether it be infidelity, emotion, or simply Patrick Wilson's gravity-defying buttocks, Todd Field's "Little Children" won over the film critics in San Francisco who named it their best film for 2006 along with granting it two other awards.

The rest of the awards were spread along expected lines, "Pan's Labyrinth" deservingly winning the best foreign film. The big news of note was that Sacha Baron Cohen won best actor for "Borat", the first time he's beaten out Forest Whitaker for the award (they previously tied once before the other day):

--- San Francisco Film Critics Circle ---

Best Picture: "Little Children"
Best Actor: Sacha Baron Cohen ("Borat")
Best Actress : Helen Mirren ("The Queen")
Best Supp. Actor: Jackie Earle Haley ("Little Children")
Best Supp. Actress: Adriana Barraza ("Babel")
Best Director: Paul Greengrass ("United 93")
Best Original Screenplay: Rian Johnson ("Brick")
Best Adapted Screenplay: Todd Field and
Tom Perrotta ("Little Children")
Best Foreign Film: "Pan's Labyrinth"
Best Documentary: "An Inconvenient Truth"
Special Citation: "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu"

damn, now I'm pretty curious to see The Last King of Scotland and The Queen...

So, we start to see some early favorites already, including Whitaker, Mirren, Little Miss Sunshine, Scorsese and Pan´s Labyrinth.

Haven't sen Last King Of Scotland yet due to it's limited release, but I saw The Queen...Mirren was amazing! Think Hoffman as Capote....

This is my best friend's favorite time of the year (and mine, too)! Let Oscar season officially begin!

I saw THE QUEEN a few months ago and it's excellent. I haven't seen THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND yet because it isn't really playing anywhere around here. I cannot wait to see PAN'S LABYRINTH. FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS was atrocious (as is anything written by Paul Haggis), so I'm a bit skeptical about LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA. My friend saw BABEL (I haven't yet) and he didn't like it.

*sighs*

And this is why I often wonder what the average age and IQ of the members of this message board are...

Flags Of Our Fathers was very good,But it's not as good as Million Dollar Baby. I'll check out "Letters from Iwo Jima" though. Don't care to see Babel though.
