I'll keep this review spoiler-free because to not do so would be a crime!

So I watched the film multiple times and I'm still processing what I've seen. This isn't a superhero film. It's a crime drama (that can stand aside films such as Heat or LA Confidential) of the superhero subtype. It's a tragedy. It's about dealing with the unforeseen consequences of actions undertaken with the best of intentions, it's about making difficult choices when presented equally terrible options. And it's very very good. Perhaps even great. I really need to see the film a few more times to appreciate it's subtleties, as it's an enjoyably layered story.

Compared to Batman Begins, this film is on another level. The action scenes flow much better with the camera pulled back and the editing far less rapid, the stand out being a chase scene in the middle of the film. The FX work is top notch, much like Iron Man. The script is where the real magic happens however. Simple conversations between characters steal this movie, the actors obviously relishing with working with such quality material. All the ****ty one liners from Begins have been jettisoned, although the movie is humorous in places.

Heath Ledger's depiction of the Joker is every bit as good as the press is reporting. He is walking contradiction, a mad man, an enigma, an anarchist, an unstoppable force who can't be reasoned or negotiated with, and in the blink of an eye switches from a darkly humorous weirdo to manic violent sociopath. And while he initially presents as a man who indulges in his every whim, he is also an absolute mastermind in the paradox he presents to Gotham City and it's inhabitants. The scope and genius of his plan cannot be fully appreciated until the final moments of the film. The ending was brilliant, I LOVED it!

Sometimes an interpretation of a character will resonate with an audience to such an extent that it will influence all future interpretations of the character. Just as Frank Miller's run on Batman in the 80's redefined the characters, or the Blade movie introduced Whistler to the characters mythos, Ledger's interpretation is so definitive that it will influence the character in comics and animated form for decades. Just wait until you see The Joker's "Magic Trick" (20 seconds of character shorthand that tells you everything you need to know).

And because Ledger is so damn good people are going to miss the other brilliant performance in this movie. Aaron Eckhart is superb, deserving all the accolades that Ledger's performance has received. His story arc is the center of the movie and is what drives it.

Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman provide solid support. Maggie Gyllenhaal replaces Katie Holmes without missing beat and the difference is Maggie actually made me give a **** about the character! Gary Oldman's Lt. James Gordon gains the most of the characters returning from the first film however.

Dependant on other films to be released this year, I'd expect TDK award nominations for Heath Ledger (Best Supporting Actor), Wally Pfister (Cinematography), Christopher & Jonathan Nolan (Best Screenplay), along with a swag of nominations in various technical and production categories (Best FX, Sound Mixing, Design etc etc). If their is any justice (which there isn't when it comes to acting nominations, too often nominations are given for an actors body of work rather than their single performance) Aaron Eckhart would be a lock for Best Supporting Actor Along with Ledger. Addition nominations for Best Film and Best Director may be a stretch, but not out of reach.

Highly recommended and I am SO happy The Dark Knight beat Spider-Man 3's record because unlike Spider-Man 3, I did not leave the theater feeling disappointed.

All 3 times I saw it in IMAX...

a) Crowd gasped at the very very first image of Gotham, with all the buildings.
b) Someone next to me got noticeably uncomfortable with Bruce being at the top of the building ready to jump (in Hong Kong).

Neither of which are issues, just... audience notes. :)

You people disappoint me...TDK got knocked out #1. By a Ben Stiller movie? :down

LOL.

Yeah but it was all about timing for Stiller's movie.

If it came out a week earlier it probably wouldn't have passed TDK. I think it's mainly to do with the fact that TDK is loosing it's steam like most movies do at this point.

It would have been great for it to have stayed number 1 for another weekend though.

But it's a good Stiller movie.

Funny thing - I saw the original cut (2 hours long) back in March. I liked it but obviously it was too long. Saw it again on Friday - flowed much better and changed the fate of a certain character...

You'll find me in the theater again this week hehe.

My best friend called it "the best movie ever" and he has seen even more movies than me!!!

I saw The Dark Knight for the 8th and possibly last time last night in Imax. Still packed as hell. It was my third time in Imax.

What can I say? What can I say?!
In the past time (August, 8th) The Dark Knight finally got it's Polish premiere. With delay (why not? Let's make them wait longer. World premiere (July 18) but not as big as in France or Spain. After a month of agony I got to go and see the film on a pre-premiere show in Krakov (in traffic, sweat and tears I got there). I bought what's needed in theater and then I found my seat which I try'd to sat down on. Try'd. Of course as it comes someone was to lazy to check the correct number of the seat and they chose mine. For two minutes he try'd to convince me that this seat is so good that he will stay here. I knew it's good, "thats why it's in the middle" - I said - "And I paid for it". I showed him my ticket once again and he finally buggered off moaning under his breath, looking for another free space.
It got Dark.

After 20 minutes of adverts and comercials, which volume was unbelievably believable (bloody loud) the movie had started.

The motion picture is the sequel of the 2005 Christopher's Nolan Batman: Begins, which is the reboot of the series. Thats why in the TDK we'll see nearly all the actors from the last part. Bale, Caine, Oldman, Freeman yes those names sertainly make our hearts pump faster. But the cast is joined by three, new and very important characters. Heath Ledger (Joker) who died recently, Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawes) who fills the role after Katie Holmes decided the leave the cast.

Ok, all those names but what do we actually get? Top-class film. The best movie of 2008 and previous years. And I'm not going to say how many records TDK had already busted. But what it is all about?

Gotham City is standing up, the corruption disappears, the level of crime is falling down all because of Batman (Christian Bale) and LT. Jim Gordon (Garry Oldman) who keep on busting the gang bangers. The situation gets even better when Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), District Attorney of Gotham City gets more powerfull then ever and helps the two heroes. Is Batman still needed? Or can he quit being a masked vigilante and finally get some peace?

Everything changes when Gotham City welcomes a new villain. The Joker (Heath Ledger). This character steels the whole show. All I've got to say is Joker's perfect. Heath's delivery is amazing, he simply became "The Prince Of Crime" instead of playing him. Every move, every breath, every blink of his eyes screams Joker, it's truly incredible! Jack Nicholson who also played the same character in 89 was great, but now...now he vanished. Heath simply "ate" all of the villains that ever apeard in history of cinema (Or at least he is amongst them). Truly one of the best creations ever! The rest of the actors also played incredibly well. Bale as The Dark Knight is even more bad-ass then previously!
Michael Caine who playes Alfred is, well...The Alfred we all wanted to see, Freeman though has quite a small role is a very likable Lucius Fox and the "new" Rachel (Maggie) is much more believable then Katie Holmes. The other "fresh" actor in TDK is Aaron Eckhart aka Harvey Dent who keeps evolving threw the whole movie. I must say I was suprised how well he delivered his part. And then we got Oldman as Jim Gordon. He played the same way he played in the first part - Fabalous!

The storyline has some stunning moments and every action sequence holds us at the edge of the seat. Batman is really dark, how he should be and Joker is funny but in a frightening and a twisted way and thats what makes him beautiful moment (the "magic trick"). This movie isn't another story about a Supehero. It's a film about how easy it is to loose everything and hit rock bottom. For me TDK is already amongst Godfather and other classics. Though the movie is just this little bit to long, you don't actually feel it.

Music ,although is better then in "Batman Begins" still isn't perfect as a seprete soundtrack. It doesn't change the fact that Zimmer and Newman made a good job creating every single track (especially Joker's theme - Why So Serious), which exites us even more while watching the movie.

I'm calling to evryone out there, watch that film! It's a masterpiece and certainly
the best movie of 2008. Believe me, my younger brother was amazed by the film, my friends where amazed by it (and no, they aren't Batman fans...). For me this film isn't perfect but it's epic and it's one of my favorite movies ever.

10/10

Been without the net for 3 weeks now. So i'll give my short review.

What can I say about this movie. I've seen it 5 times in the theater, and I've loved it every time. The movie, for me, flows like a beautiful sonnet.

The Joker, was what I always wanted, dark, sinister, scary, and funny. Some parts, like the discussion on how he got the scars, took me back to his old appearances, especially when talking about having a multilple choice past. It was brilliant.

Two-Face, only in it for a short time, but the character was done justice. I felt the character was fleshed out enough that I felt sympathetic for him and not just like "oh, he's a villian now". Eckhart was perfect as Dent.

Everyone else, spot on performances.

I don't know what it is about Gordons dialogue at the end, but it gave me chills. I was happy to see more Gordon this time around.

All in all, I can't give this movie anything but a 10. Becuase, In my opinion, it's the best "movie" I've seen in years, not just the best "comic based movie". So bash me if you will for calling it perfect, that's fine. I'll stick by what I say.

Great movie. Minor problems like Gordon's speech at the end, quite unnecessary and rhetoric. But Oldman is just the perfect depiction of Gordon, and a great actor.

Never liked the bat-armour (I still don't), but in intense dark it worked well. And, finally, they made Batman move his head like he always should. Kudos for Nolan!

Well, I was thinking I would be amazed with Ledger's acting, but I thought he woudn't give me the impression of THE Joker.

I was hugely mistaken: he was just incredible. The movie is a very, very good one, but Ledger is from another league. It was pure genius.

His lines were written with uncommon brilliance, also, and that must be noticed. Joker in this movie was treated with great care and boldness. I am thankful.

Probably a bit behind here. But the Battersea scene was the one where batman tries to save Harvey Dent. It was that explosion that was seen for miles around London causing widespread panic. I should know, i was on the set during filming.

I really liked that chase with the armored cars and so on. Moreso the second time around.

Bah, I wish there was an IMAX theater close to where I live ... :(

Yeah, I've seen it several times in both IMAX and regular screen...and it's definitely worth a trip to see in IMAX. It's an amazing experience you don't quite reach in a regular theater.

Especially when you see the Joker and Two-Face's face for the first time

One thing I didn't add in my review that I would like to add now.

I really enjoyed how this franchise, especially in TDK, how Gordon and Batman had that friendship. It wasn't really visible in the previous movies as much. And that's the one thing I always wished they would've showed. Now we get it, and it's great.

10/10

Without a doubt, The Dark Knight is the best movie i have seen this year, no matter how good all the other movies will be. I have never, ever seen a movie as dark as this one. It is more then entertaining from beginning to end. There is definitley not a single moment where you either want to sleep or walk out of the theater. This ain't just a movie full of spectacular visual effects. This is a movie full of spectacular visual effects, amazing acting, and one unforgettable story line.

Christian Bale once again delivers lots of satisfaction as Bruce Wayne/Batman and he leads a very strong and very talented cast. Aaron Eckhart is a breath of fresh air as the new ill fated DA Harvey Dent who goes from being a pure White Knight to a scarred villain. And the late Heath Ledger gives an oscar worthy performance as Batman's number one arch nemesis, the Joker. Ledger simply disappears into the role, but he is not the only one who gives the strongest performance of his career. Gary Oldman has a lot more to do as Lieutenant *** Commissioner Gordon and gives IMO the best performance of his career.

All in all, this is the best superhero movie of all time, and any new graphic novel movie adaptation or comic book movie adaption will have to try very
hard to reach the success of the Dark Knight, all though Watchmen does look very promising.

i've been following the production for The Dark Knight since the days when they were doing pre-production work on the movie--so yes i was pretty spoiled for everything. i knew about the plot, the set designs, costumes, locations, even the lottery of actors being considered for The Joker and Two Face. i followed main production at Chicago, London and Hong Kong very closely, so a lot of the things we saw in the movie i knew the behind the scenes tales of how they got those shots. but despite my level of "spoilerage", this movie totally blew me away. it truly attests the talent of Christopher Nolan and crew to tell a very compelling and enrapturing story.

possible spoilers in the acting review
Christian Bale as always gave a stand out performance in the dual role of Batman/ Bruce Wayne, but being a Balehead i wasnt surprised at the level of consistency and intensity of his work. that has always been the norm in whatever role Bale takes on. i'm just glad that his talent is finally being recognized on a global scale. and i must say that although Bale is an excellent actor that has proven to be very capable of bringing any role to life, for the role of Bruce Wayne/ Batman, he just shines in it. there's just something about this character that fits him like a glove, like he was born to play this role. i know it has been realized three years ago, but it has to be said again: Christian Bale is the definitive Batman, the way Christopher Reeve was the definitive Superman.

the late Heath Ledger. first off, i want to give a posthumous apology for ever doubting the man and his ability to excel in his craft. its true that when he was first announced to take on Batman's most iconic villain i was one of those who wailed at his casting. the subsequent release of the first Joker photo made me feel disgusted and creeped out, a reaction i welcomed since i knew director Chritopher Nolan was on the right track, but i still had doubts that Ledger had the chops to pull it off. now this movie has sealed it for me. a bit too late unfortunately but hey better late than never. Ledger's performance as the Joker is not only mesmerizing, it redefines the portrayal of a comic book villain. he gives respect to the character's comicbook roots but has also given him a true-to-life credibility of a real psychopathic criminal. Ledger achieved every aspect of what the Joker is: he was comical but also demented, graceful as well as violent, he claims to be simply an agent of chaos but is revealed to be the devil himself pulling the strings.

Aaron Eckhart must also be given due accord as Harvey Dent/ Two-Face, lest his winning performance be overlooked by the more prominent Joker. i've been a comic book fan for years and i always felt that there was just something sinister about Harvey Dent, but Eckahart portrayal of him made me believe in Harvey Dent: the good guy, the crime fighter, the White Knight of Gotham, the guy least likely to turn to the dark side. which makes Harvey's fall from grace even more tragic. and for all the crimes Two-Face does afterwards, you'd be hard pressed to hate him.

Gary Oldman, again someone i deemed too young for the role but totally blew me away when i saw him in Batman Begins.what is wonderful about Oldman's performance in this film (other than the fact that he's always so mesmerizing to watch) is that he perfectly captures the strife that Gordon experiences as a man of the law amidst shady cops trying to turn over a new leaf (and not always succeeding). at the end of this i felt that Gordon himself should be given some kind of award for being such an outstanding crimefighter despite the fact that he doesnt always have the means to do his job effectively.

and i thank all that is holy for Maggie Gylenhaal for taking over the role of Rachel Dawes. heck they should've hired Maggie for the role since Batman Begins. Maggie brings credibility, spunk and pizazz that makes a totally believable Assistant DA, and not the cheerleader/ reporter lightweight that was Katie Holmes.

then we have the irreverent Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Wayne Enterprise's CEO and Batman's Tech Guru. given my familiarity with Fox's comic book roots i expected those roles to permeate the films. what i didnt expect is for him to take on those roles at the same time. although i like seeing Fox the tech whiz onscreen, i'm a little saddened by the fact that this version of Batman seems to be dependent on him to come up with most of the cool gadgetries instead of inventing them himself (as he is known to do). in any case, Freeman's Lucius Fox is so watchable he always brings a smile on my face, i dont care if all he does is sit and look at the other guy. and although not quite as flashy as the other actors in their roles, has managed to influence at how the character is portrayed even in the comics. now that's making an impact! and unexpectedly this line made me laugh in more ways than one: "Let me get this straight. You think that your employer, one of the richest men in the world, is spending his nights running around the city beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands? And your plan is to blackmail him? Good luck with that." LOL!

Sir Michael Caine, as always is such a pleasure to watch, reprising his role as loyal butler/ father figure Alfred Pennyworth. Caine had most of the movie's memorable lines (the others being given to The Joker and Harvey Dent) and gave the most apt description of the Joker in the movie: "..Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn." beautiful!

so, question of the hour is: does Heath Ledger deserve an Oscar for his performance?

perhaps, but if that be the case then the rest of the cast must be recognized as well. their performance may not be as flamboyant as Ledgers (i mean who can be? none of their roles are as outrageous as the Joker), but it doesnt mean that their work was any less significant. but if there is one important thing that Ledger's Oscar nomination (and possible win) will achieve is that it will prompt the Academy to take genre movies more seriously. Science Fiction, Fantasy, Adventure and similar themed movies are usually overlooked by the Academy for outstanding acting performances. i mean with Harry Potter, despite all the fantastic English veteran actors that has graced the franchise, has any of them been nominated? not one. the last time the Academy acknowledged any acting work from such films was Sir Ian McKellen's Gandalf in LOTR. prior to that you'd have to look 30 years back, to Sir Alec Guiness' role as the elder Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. and neither of them won. if Ledger miraculously wins the Oscar for Joker, his will be the first win for a genre movie in the acting category.

Oscar-mongering aside, The Dark Knight is a great movie, definitely the best movie of the summer and quite possibly, best movie of the year. i highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good dark movie. One word of advice: The Dark Knight may have a PG-13 rating, but please leave the kids at home, this is not the Cartoon Network Batman and, as one reviewer has said, is truly just a few blood drops shy of an R rating.

What's up with the people at Comic Book Resources? They're tearing this movie apart like it's The Phantom Menace.
