The Darkness 2

"The Darkness" is all about mobster Jackie Estecado, who basically has a near-death experience on his 21st(?) birthday and as a result encounters an evil entity known as "The Darkness" which basically merges with his body to give him crazy supernatural demon powers. The story is balanced between Jackie's inner struggles with The Darkness and his exterior struggles with the rival mobs. This new one looks like it ads a new "cult" type group to the mix, too.

I'm stoked to hear there's still slow parts to D2. One of the things I thought was so damn cool about D1 was how you could literally sit in front of a TV for like an hour if you wanted just watching shows. Also, exploring the city during down-time was fantastic. It really was a great game. Hoping D2 lives up to it!

Hm, interesting. Thanks for the info. Gonna pick this up.

I just unlocked that armour. Yet to see a mirror with it on to check myself out but your hands look freaking awesome :P

Picked up the game on tues, and while I haven't beaten it, I suspect I'm pretty close. There are some new additions that I'm really enjoying such as the ability to grab objects around you and use them as weapons/shields, but overall the darkness powers feel like they're lacking. In the first one, you had the tentacles, the "snake" and the various darlings to choose from. In this one, you pretty much just have the tentacles with a few modifications sprinkled in.

The game itself is fun, but after waiting 5 years for a sequel, I guess I was hoping for more. It's definitely not bad, and I'm glad I picked it up - it just feels somewhat unfinished. Here's to hoping they do a 3rd and nail it.

It's funny, because in a way you're right, there are less individual unique powers, but I find it so much more satisfying and so much more faithful to the comic. In the first game sure you could use your crawling snake or black holes etc, but it was so fiddly you could only ever use one thing at a time, then hide in the darkness again to recharge. In this one you can do everything at once, string awesome attacks together. Send out a swarm of darkness, snatch a hostage, rip his spine out through his but, use that force to form a darkness shield, use darkness guns over the shield to mow down 5 guys, throw the shield at another guy then throw your darkling at the last guy. It's so much more satisfying to clear out a room. In the first game it was very a much a 'kill one guy at a time' type thing, in this one, you feel like this immensely powerful force that could just tear through armies with ease.

I also think they made the Light Weakness much better in this game. Instead of being paranoid over whether you're losing power, it's a much more simple 'In the light, no darkness powers. In the dark, full darkness powers'. It means you have to react much quicker to any enemies with flash grenades or shoulder lights.

I'll definitely be up for any co-op if anyone is keen once they've finished single player.

I just beat the game. At first I thought the ending was just sorta "blah" but there's an after credits scene that sets the stage for the 3rd game. I'm still confused about the storyline in the game and how certain events tie in together.

Overall, it was fun. Game of the year? Not by a long shot, but it was enjoyable. I definitely think it improved upon a lot of things (the core mechanics of the tentacles and the executions), but sorta fell flat in other areas (the limited number of attacks, power variety).

I'm hoping they release some add on DLC in the near future. I'd love to keep playing.

You should try the co-op, it's a lot more robust than I was expecting. It's a nice, deep and fun mp mode, not just a throw away add on. Cool story stuff too. I'd recommend playing with any friends though, more fun with friends.

Picked the game up today and its mad fun. Everything just works so well. Love those damn tentacle things. Should i play the first game at all? Is it as good as this one?

Also, how do you unlock extra costumes? I saw that you guys said there was some in the game.

I recommend the first game; especially if you like the gameplay of this one.

Does this game have some kind of online pass? Or something I'll miss out on when I buy it used?

No extra costumes, but one of the skill tree perks is your darkness armour from the comics which lets you take more damage and get awesome looking hands/face.

You can get a different skin for you darkling though.

Ohhh, that makes sense.

This game has some of THE sickest kills iv ever seen. Ripping a dudes spinal column out through his a**hole? Oh that's glorious

I thought the Kotaku review was really, really unfair on this game. I'm really enjoying the story. It's one of the best comic based games I've played in a while.

I haven't read that review but I thought the story was pretty cool. Seemed as tho there was like a heaven v hell thing going on and seeing as how I still love Spawn, I really liked that. Thought the epilogue was really neat.

Yeah, thE Darkness vs Angelus thing is a huge thing from the comics and very cool.

Only thing that annoys me is that Victor, the main bad buy, isn't as cool as Sonatine, the guy who rules the Brotherhood in the comics.

I thought Victor was a neat villain altho he never seemed very imposing. Maybe the guy u speak of is more so? I wouldnt know, this game is my first entry into anything Darkness related.

Yeah, Sonatine was a total bad ass. Victor was good, no doubt, but Sonatine is even better. I reckon you'd love the comics Pat, especially if you love Spawn.

You'd probably like the first game too, although it is very different pace wise but still cool (if you like the Riddick games). Also, you can actually unlock the first full issues of The Darkness in that game and just read them from the main menu. Pretty cool.

Yea I'm deff gonna look into this series more. I think I'm gonna order the 1st game off of amazon tomorrow.
