Which boggles the mind of why screenwriters for the big budget films fail to understand the characters...a side from Dark Knight even though Timm and Dini got it right in MOTP imho:o

Agreed. I made a thread a few weeks ago about how the personel from the DCAU being brought in as, at the very least, consultants (if not outright writers/conceptualists/screenwriters) on the live action films would be a great idea.

I still think it would be.

Bring Timm onto the Live Action Superman Reboot for instance...

I was never as impressed by the DCAU take on Superman as I was by their take on Batman. I think they were better than anyone else on Batman outside of the comics themselves, but their portrayals of the rest of the characters vary widely. I absolutely loved their Lex Luthor, though. Superman Returns would've benefitted a lot from that take on Lex instead of trying to force him into the stupid mad scientist role he outgrew years ago.

I never watched Justice League but I was a huge fan of the Batman series on Fox. I caught some of it when it went to WB

Batman Beyond rocked. Im surprised DC didnt have Terry make his way into the regular DC universe

What's wrong with the DCAU take on Superman?

To me D&T take on Superman is best to date. I love the way young Clark was a a-hole in Smallville becoming the mild mannered Clark in Metropolis. The Superman Darkseid storyline was just great...classic storyline.

I don't know, exactly. The eternal will-they/won't-they with Lois didn't help. I always wished they'd gotten married in the show like they did in the comics. His powers were always kind of wonky, too. He's strong enough to kick Darkseid's ass in "Destroyer," but then he was weak enough to be knocked out by every little energy blast or electrical current for years before that. I liked the stories, but Superman himself just didn't feel right to me.

I read that they actually wanted to go the distance with it JLU, but DC or WB (or both) told them not to.

Well, okay, he was knocked around too easily sometimes, but I guess that's just part of the problem with writing Superman in general (or any super strong character for that matter) - how far back do you scale the strength so that they can actually be challenged? If Superman just floored everyone with one punch, it wouldn't be much of an adventure. I seem to recall them acknowledging that in their audio commentary of "World's Finest part 1", the wonkiness of his power levels - "Last Son part 3" he has to really wrestle the endangered plane to the ground, WF part 1 he knocks another plane around with relative ease.

I see where you are coming from...I think this explains it all

I'm with you right there Rome. Batman the Animated Series is what made the 90's animation renaissance great! Plus Kevin Conroy is still the best Batman.

Bruce Timm sure knew how to make some fine-ass women in all those series!

Right, but they had plenty of enemies on JL/JLU that could've been more than a match for Superman. On a team with Wonder Woman, the Martian Manhunter, the Flash, and a Green Lantern, power levels shouldn't be a problem because they're necessarily going to be fighting super-powerful threats. Instead, they were pretty much all toned down. The Martian Manhunter forgot half his powers in most fights, the Flash was a moron who could barely outrun cars except in one episode, etc. Just weird. Like I said, though, I still loved the stories.

The fact that they're all basically identical except for their hair and lipstick started to annoy me a bit by the time JLU rolled around, but they were a pretty fine template, at least. :)

Well Corp your argument about the flash is easily beaten by the fact that he has the greatest scene in all of DCU animation!

Didn't I just say "except for one episode"? I know that scene was badass. It's all his other scenes I have a problem with. :oldrazz:

The Catwoman from the 90's tops the 2000 one easily:o

I've always loved the episode where Flash & Luthor switch minds. It was a testement to just how awesome the character was even though Wally West wasn't mentally steering the ship in that instance.

I've always felt that Timm & Co. sort of gave John Stewart the proverbial short end of the stick. He did alot of dumb things in certain eps.

The man was knocked out by Aquaman for God's sake...AQUAMAN!

Arthur is pretty strong:o

I love when Lex pulls off Flash's mask and says " I don't even know who this is." :hehe:

Yeah, I know but they (Timm & Co.) seemed to cherry pick Stewart to get setup for that cheapshot while keeping the greater heroes popularity and reputations intact.

I don't care how you spin it, it's emasculating getting punched out by a guy who talks to fish to fight crime.

That is hilarious. :woot:

The best part of that episode was listening to Clancy Brown try to play Flash with Lex's voice: "I, Lex Luthor, evil guy..."

I got the opposite impression. It seemed like Green Lantern could do no wrong for a long time. He got batted around now and then, but at the end of the day he's just a guy with a ring, so he's got his limits. He still seemed to get more screen time than most of the other members, plus he had like 3 romantic subplots. That's kind of insane when you consider that the only other major romances on the show belonged to Green Arrow, Black Canary, the Question, and Huntress. It seemed like they realized they had a mostly blank slate with John, who hadn't done a whole lot of memorable stuff in the comics at that point, and decided to essentially make him and Hawkgirl the stars of JLU. Maybe I just noticed it more because I hated Hawkgirl and I'm indifferent to John.

A hell of a lot of characters have been emasculated in the comics, then. Even some major ones.

You got something against the Fish King? Aquaman rocks and it's a travesty he wasn't included in the original seven to begin with.

Aquaman is cool; I have nothing against him personally but he's a limited character.

I agree with you that he should have been included in the original seven but that's just my inner Superfriends talking from childhood.
But when water isn't involved, what is he going to do besides riding shotgun with Batman or Wonder Woman?

I did enjoy the ep when he pimp slaps one of the fake Wonder Twins though... :funny:

You mean like Captain Marvel in CLASH unrightfully so?
