The Doctor Doom Thread

I’m not a fan of this Robert Downey thing. He brings too many pre-conceptions and distractions. Seems like they're trying to be cute/clever, pander to RDJ fans rather than getting the best actor for the role.

I'm certain he'll be a variant, we'll see where the mcu is headed.

It's probably be like Vader where RDJ does the voice while a different actor wears the mask and costume.

I’m hoping it’s some kind of joke or misdirection, but I’m afraid they really screwed up the most important casting of the decade.

If he hadn’t already played Tony Stark, it wouldn’t be so bad, but now that’s all anybody will be thinking about.

Yeah, great actor, but he's iconic as Stark. This feels like trying too hard to get back on track after the last few years, so let's get our most beloved actor to play our most iconic villain, made by our most successful directors. I think they will try to sell it as inspired, in that it's so obvious if you think about it kinda way, but it's the opposite for me. I want Victor von Doom, not evil Tony Stark variant.

I get why RDJ would want to do it, but I have no idea why Marvel allowed it…

… other than $$$.

I think we forget what a character actor Downy used to be. The guy got an Oscar nomination for playing Charlie Chaplin. He can nail Doom.

I just don't know how much faith I have in Marvel at this point.

It’s not his acting ability.

It’s the problem of movie goers picturing Tony Stark instead of Victor Von Doom.

Exactly. Money. The pressure to get back to making it. Funny it comes on the weekend DP and Wolverine will shatter box office records. If that movie came out in May you wonder if they would have made this move. Maybe I'm too cynical, but this feels like a choice from a studio that doesn't respect the intelligence of their audience. So basically an extension of what they've been doing since Endgame, but instead of taking success and the audience for granted by serving up mediocrity, they assume this is slam dunk casting because they cast a fan favorite actor and we are all going to eat it up. They have lost the plot.

The chances that RDJ's Doom is the one from this universe?

Doom done properly should be linked to Reed Richards.

Which means if Reed Richards travels from his world to ours, Doom should come with him.

If the Reed Richards and Doom we’ll be seeing for the next 10 years didn’t go to college together, I have a problem.

This is my fear about this casting. You're gonna see Tony Stark, not Victor Von Doom.

Also, with all the rumors that RDJ was going to come back as a Iron Man variant for Secret Wars, does that put that to bed with this announcement? Obviously it could still happen, but at this point it would just be weird.

Like I said in the FF thread, my hype for Doomsday/Secret Wars is 0 at this point. I hate everything about the creative direction here. Worse than any nightmare I could have had about how they would do Doom. Ugh.

I now take back my statements that Doom must be tied to the FF. Now I want Iron Doom here to be as far away from the FF as possible.

I wonder if this Doom isn’t a Stark variant originally and maybe transferred his consciousness into a Stark variant.

That would make this somewhat more tolerable for me, assuming it’s temporary and we get a different actor as Doom later.

Nah, this IS our Doctor Doom story. They're using that Doomsday branding on their largest IP now. We are not getting another Doom some other time down the road. This is the bullet in that chamber. It's being used now

This is… honestly shocking. I legit can’t believe they’re doing this. RDJ is fantastic but this casting comes with so much baggage. Is he a Stark variant? Is he related to Stark in any way? Just why even go this direction? Bringing back RDJ and the Russos seems like Marvel is really desperately trying to recapture the Endgame hype in any way they can. I’m not sure how I feel about this because I’m just so shocked right now.

This hits weird for me. I’ll have to see how it plays out, but early impression is that Superior Iron Man would’ve been a better choice here.
YEah I'm really confused why they didn't do this.

I mean it still would've been a desperate silly move. But at least it somewhat would've made sense.

Wonder if we should expect a noble sacrifice from Doom to defeat Galactus and save the multiverse in Secret Wars?
