i was wondering too. maybe they were the elders of the universe. i only remember 1 dying, or not all of them died. the image ended with an explosion of light, but we only saw one explode. maybe the other elders are still alive, like the collector which is how he knew the tale.

also who was the muscled bound guy with a red cape in the collector's glass case. we only see his back.

not true at all. that scene was always pre-credits. I know 2008 was a wild year and we all took a lot of drugs back then and in this case you just might remember it wrong.

when the collector told the story of the gems. he showed 2 examples of the orb's gem being used. the first was by a huge robot looking being(a celestial). the stone was in his staff it looked like. then the collector showed a group of robed beings, maybe himself and the other eternals, trying to use the gem.

think of the celestials as space gods.
