I wrote an article on this. Enjoy.

On December 21, 2012, we are supposed to believe the world will come to an end. You know...
- The Apocalypse
- The End of the World
- Armageddon
- Doomsday
- Judgment Day
- Midnight
- The Revelations
- The End of Days
- Michael Jackson Goes To Disney World
... or what have you. It's all happening in less than four years.
It's also known as "The Mega-Metamorphosis"... which sounds the coolest, I think.
"A bunch of crap", you say? Well, aside from the Religious-Fanatic Mumbo-Jumbo (which I totally respect and have no problem with), here's what tons of scientists are saying.

Were a million years over due for a mass extinction.
The sun at radiation minimum is acting much worse than at solar maximum, and one misdirected spewing of plasma could fry us in an instant.
The magnetic fieldwhich shields us from harmful radiationis developing a mysterious crack.
Our solar system is entering an energetically hostile part of the galaxy.
The Yellowstone supervolcano is getting ready to blow, and if it does, we can look forward to nuclear winter and 90 percent annihilation.
The Maya, the worlds greatest timekeepers ever, say its all going to stop on December 21, 2012.
So, see? Theres nothing you can do, but you might as well sit back and enjoy the show.

The December solstice for 2012 also occurs on this day.
Basically, this has been talked about for years. Various movies, like "End of Days", "The Omen", and other crappy attempts at cinema-smartness have tried to make a good case of it, but all we get is some dumb Shwarzennegger movie.... which is why most people laugh at this stuff, because if Arnold's in a movie about Satan and the end of the world, it can't be true, right?
The Mayans were pretty damn smart, too... so if they have prohesized that the end of the world is going to be on December 21, 2012... I would argue that it's semi-true.
Of all dates, why December 21, 2012?
Well, first of all, looking at that date on my own, without reading scientific stuff... I notice the date is actually this numerically:
12/21/12
I don't know what that means, or what is suggests, but I definitely see a repeating pattern there:
1-2-2-1-1-2
122112
I don't know why this bothers me... but it does. Of course, there're other strange dates in the near future, like 10/10/10, or 11/11/11.... but a unique pattern like 122112 really piques my interest.
I'm bored, so I'll play around with that date.
1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 9
9 turned upside down is 6.
6 repeated 3 times would be 666.
666?
No... that's a stretch. I'm laughing at myself.
Turn each number into the letter of the alphabet, and 1=A, 2=B.
ABBAAB
Or... ABBA-AB
Is the band "Abba" making a comeback, with a new song called "Ab", and it's going to be so awesome, it will tip the world off its axis, causing the apocalypse?!?
No.
So, I don't get it. I wanna say Binary code... but that's 1's and 0's... is there another type of code with just 1's and 2's?
But in all seriousness, here's another thing I notice.
Our next presidential election will be in November 2008.
Since a new president is elected every 4 years, that means the next election after this one will be in November 2012.
Right?
So, that's 1 month before the end of the world. Perhaps a new US leader will be elected, and he's like... the Anti-Christ, or something? And he's got so much power, he uses it for evil instead of good... war, famine, what have you.
^^ Although he wouldn't officially be president until his inauguration in January 2013.
So I don't get it. I don't know what the deal is.
Could this be the Second Coming of Christ? If so, why would his second coming mean the end of Earth?
From Wikipedia:
According to astronomers, the Earth should last for at least 5×109 more years before the sun becomes a red giant. Due to the sun's loss of mass the Earth would escape to an orbit at a further distance than its current orbit. The immense heat however would likely boil off the oceans and turn the Earth into a barren wasteland looking like Mars does with a similar climate to Venus. Irrespective of the Earth surviving that event, the sun would have further evolved into a white dwarf and provide too little heat to sustain life.
Others say the atmosphere will lose its water vapor to space within 1.1×109 years because the sun will become about 10% hotter, and that the oceans will evaporate within 3.5×109 years when the sun is 40% hotter.
In 3.5×109 years the Andromeda Galaxy may collide with ours and may wipe out some solar systems.
Most scenarios concerning the ultimate fate of the universe would subsequently destroy the Earth.

More Crap from Wikipedia:
December 21 The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar used by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN= 584283). The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) which records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed. However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. Some believe that this will most likely result in a 'global shift of consciousness' and/or the end of time as we know it. The December solstice for 2012 also occurs on this day.

So, what do you think?
Discuss.
Speculate.
Argue.
Cuss each other out.
Me, personally... I think it might be true. I'm not gonna say it's 100% true or 100% false.... but I do think there's enough scientific reasoning to suggest that it's indeed possible.
Yeah.
