The Expanse

The finale was good for having to squeeze the whole 3rd act of the book into just 2 episodes. Some thoughts:

Remember Father Cortez? Anna shared a few words with him, and they have a ton of back-and-forth in the book. Did he die off-screen in the speed change like the blind guy? Pity to set both of them up and then just discard them like that.

I was annoyed when Clarissa went straight from a prison cell to the command deck. It was such a contrived way to get her in place. Truncating the story meant losing the whole mutiny and Ashford recruiting her and taking back the Behemoth, plus some great moral digressions about forgiveness between her and Cortez.

I also missed the rest of the fight between her, Naomi, and Anna. It's my favorite scene in the book, though cutting it down wasn't surprising.

The way they streamlined things also made Ashford seem like less of a callous psycho, which I guess is an improvement?

That was a nice hat trick they did with Drummer. Setting her up for the same last stand as Bull in the book before the last-minute save by Naomi. She's just too fun a character to let go of.

And I guess Bobbi is joining the Roci now? I don't mind seeing more of Bobbi, and I know she comes back in book 5. I guess it makes sense in the context of the show.
Overall, great show, great season, great adaptation, so glad it was saved from the chopping block. Looking forward to how they tackle Cibola Burn.

Bit confused by what happened with Holden at the end though? Miller was heard saying I need a ride, then something seemed to hit Holden - almost like he'd just been possessed?
Any comment on this? Anyone?

[BLACKOUT]I do have to wonder just how much of book 4 ('Cibola Burn') we will get in S4, as there is not much happening in the beginning, I guess it would also depend on how many episodes Amazon puts out as well. [/BLACKOUT]

Which ep are you talking about ?
The final; there is a scene where Miller can be heard saying "I need a lift" and then we get the [apparent] whiplash effect by Holden. It seemed a tad too convenient, and I don't get what purpose there was for Miller to have that line if there's not something more to make of the scene...

Holden ( talking about the rings builders ) : What could have killed them ?
Holden : That's what I'd like to know
Miller : Gonna need a ride.

I understand Miller's line as : if you want the answer, "we" will need to travel, hence the "gonna need a ride" line.

I think that what you call whiplash was just the visual effect of Holden crossing a ring.

It could be, yeah, but I don't recall anyone else having that whiplash effect. Normally that wave just goes over people and they stand still. In any case, why is Miller still in Holden's head if they've dealt with the protomolocule threat? Surely Miller will be at rest about now? Maybe I missed it, but was it ever explained how it was Holden (and only Holden) that could see Miller?

They just pimped the crossing SFX for Holden I think.

The threat is gone but there are still things that Miller must explain I guess. I don't know, maybe how to close the doors, how to locate the destination before crossing, stuff like that.
Proto Miller is like a tutorial and it's not finished yet.

I don't remember if Holden/Miller's connexion was explained but it makes sense w/o giving the technical details of the how's.

From Entertainment Weekly
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Let’s start right at the very end: What is the meaning of that last shot where the Roci goes through the Ring, and as Holden passes through it, there is a burst of energy. What’s going on there, and what are you setting up for season 4?
NAREN SHANKAR: When Holden was in that vision with Miller, he learns the beings that built the Rings, they’re gone. So what killed them? Because he had a vision of these things, he had a vision of something destroying the Rings and shutting them down. And Miller says, “I kinda wanna know too.” And so when the Roci goes to the Ring at the end, it comes to kind of an ominous little harbinger of things to come. That there is something inside that Ring space, in places between the Ring gates, that’s gonna come into play at some point as the series goes on.

The Expanse showrunner explains season 3 finale and previews season 4

Maybe the bad aliens are interdimensional aliens. Maybe Holden is now possessed by one of those malevolent aliens and it will try to take control of him and destroy Miller.

So I've had family visiting the last couple weeks and only just now got a chance to watch the finale. SO GOOD! Question though, possibly for those who've read the books, as I don't think it's really a spoiler, just something that was unclear to me at the end there: did all the ships go out the same gate? Or are they now all scattered across the various solar systems? I did see a bunch of them going through one gate, but not sure if that was meant to be all of them.

My understanding (or assumption?) is that they all returned to our solar system. Presumably S4 will focus on the outbound expeditions.

Yeah, after the Slow Zone banged everybody about and Ashford almost blew up the backdoor, I expect everybody was anxious to get back on the safe side of the Ring.

How “The Expanse” Will Change Over At Amazon
By Garth Franklin

As we know, Syfy’s “The Expanse” series has found a new home at Amazon Prime for its fourth season. The third season finale sees a dramatic change-up to the universe of the series – opening up the scale of the series to something even more epic as it moves out into the galaxy.
Speaking about the new season and home at Comic-Con this weekend, showrunner Naren Shankar tells Indiewire that both the move to a new phase in the source material, and a shift from a cable network to a well-funded streaming service, will alter the series:
“We’re in the second big movement in the books … a new chapter in humanity. We’re no longer constrained in the solar system. It’s how humanity deals with this vast new frontier. It’s going to be more awesome.
We no longer have the language restrictions. [We can] curse like a sailor. We don’t have the nudity restrictions… and the 4K and HDR will look amazing on Amazon. We’re no longer constrained by a 43-minute box. We can put some air into it, let things breathe a little bit more. So we’re excited to be on Amazon Prime.”
The fourth season of “The Expanse” is expected sometime in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video.

That's great and all, but lets not have a Game of Thrones in Space. Nudity isn't a requirement for a good show. The Expanse has proved that already.

Yeah the cursing thing doesn't worry me because they already do it on the show and sometimes it gets edited or whatever, but generally the show is perfectly mature and "adult" as it is. There's no need to add a bunch of nudity just because they can.

Did they not realize that Syfy had eased up on the cursing?

Syfy still bleeped out the F word in the broadcast version, and even with the lighter rules the writers still had to be careful because it was a broadcasted show. Now the writers are free to write without having to worry about censorship rules at all.

I expect we will see some nudity (**** and ass) and an increase in violence and visible gore. And if there is a sex scene it might be a bit more graphic. The show has always had some nudity, violence, gore, and sex. The difference is now they dont have to worry about broadcasters freaking out over a harmless visible nipple, or a sex scene having too many thrusts, or this bit of gore, or that bit of brutality. It allows the writers and showrunners to think about the story and characters first and getting the show shot how they want it rather than worrying about broadcast television rules.

But the new amounts of gore is perfectly fine huh? :p

Battlestar Galactica is the gold standard, in my view, but really looking forward to S4. They started filming in September, so it might only arrive around june/july.
