The Expendables 2 - Part 2

Style and tone =/= genre. They where all hyped as fun men on a mission movies.

I love how everyone start yelling Die Hard 4 until they're blue in the face, but conveniently ignore Terminator Salvation. Fat load of good making a Terminator movie with no violence did for them.

There is plenty of violence in Terminator Salvation. It is a flat out lie to say it didn't. I didn't like the film but it had plenty of violence.

Blood and gore is not what makes something violent. There was probably more blood and gore in Salvation then in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Guess which was more violent.

Terminator 4 didn't have the original hero. It was dumb to ever try and make a a Terminator film with Arnold. He is the Terminator. Still, both it and T3 made way more then the first Expendables.

And nope, they were not marketed as the same films. The Expendables was come and watch the badasses of your youth be badasses. That is exactly how they will market the sequel. The A-Team was come watch this fun, over the top action intended for the whole family.

You're remembering a different film. There was zero on screen fatalities in TS. They even cut out a scene of bloodless knife penetration.

They didn't make more. They grossed more and netted far, far less.

Now you're just disagreeing for the sake of being a contrarian. Are you Armond White? If you didn't think those and The Losers where all marketed as being over the top action films, you're seriously flame baiting.

You don't need fatalities. I saw human tissue being burned off robots.

Not to mention the violence seen through out the film. Conner gets rag dolled in the final scene, the new terminator gets wrecked.

They didn't make more. They grossed more and netted far, far less.

According to Box Office Mojo.

The Expendables cost $80 million, grossed $274 million WW.

T3 cost $200 million, grossed $433 million WW.

Salvation cost $200 million, grossed $371 million WW.

One made 40 million more the Expendables, one 20 million less. So one netted far more and one netted good amount less. Neither netted far, far less. Add in the merchandising for the Terminator films and I am pretty sure even Salvation ended up ahead. :awesome:

If this is true, why does the rating for the Expendables matter? Do you not understand you are contradicting yourself?

You don't need fatalities? In a war movie? Connor gets thrown around like a basketball in extremely cartoony ways. Which is why the films is considered a joke to begin with.

Expendables made a 342.5% return it's investment.
T3 = 216.5%
TS = 185.5%

Expendables was the most successful by far.

Because it delivered hardcore violence instead of comic book silliness. The sequel is promising comic book silliness. I don't want that, so I wont watch it.

Given you don't care about the film at all, it's clear you're only here to stir the pot. Just stop it.

Lol I see Skywalker is still at it and the movies still PG-13. No improvements here I guess.

Terminator Salvation didn't do well with its merchandising. The game was lackluster and didn't sell, the action figures were peg warmers for 2 years, even at 4 bucks a piece.
The Hot Toys Barney Ross figure actually out up good numbers for not being a huge character/superhero.

Was it cartoony when the same happened in T2?

Percentages? :woot:

You could make a movie for $1, gross $50 and claim a 5000% return in your investment. :awesome:

Wow. :woot:

The Expendables doesn't have hardcore violence. Old men running around breaking necks, using knifes and tearing through hundreds of opponent does not equal hardcore violence. It is every bit the cartoon you are already branding the sequel with.

Just like John Rambo and his exploding arrows, it is all comic book silliness.

These movies aren't Saving Private Ryan.

The pirate splattered into two halfs.
Sly dismembering the rapists, body parts flying around.
Lots of CGI blood.
Sly pentretating the guy with the knife and turning it around - with blood.

And whatever.

All way graphic than those so-called "hard" PG-13 movies like Captain America, The Dark Knight, Casino Royale and whatever. That it is "comic book silliness" doesn't matter, that's part of the fun. This stuff is part of the movie. It made the movie better. Deal with it.

This sequel will lose his unique selling point.

THIS. Thank you!!

I think it's just stupid to judge the movie so harshly without even seeing it...but then again im on a message board so this doesn't surprise me.

I love how Chuck Norris cites profanity as the reason behind it. I don't even REMEMBER the profanity in the first one. I was too distracted by the guy getting blown in half by a grenade launcher to the torso.

Van Damme with an inspiring performance? This I gotta see!

JCVD IS Nelson Mandella in Invictus: Regeneration.

Scott Adkins sold out the sell outs;

Bummed out that Expendables 2 will be PG-13? Never fear, UniSol 4 will probably be the most violent action film you've ever seen.

Good, there's one EX2 cast member that I'm not supremely annoyed at. Hopefully Statham asks to be digitally removed from the film or something.

That reminds me I need to finish watching JCVD.

I did like the JCVD movie. It's good that he can take a few jabs at himself.

I still haven't seen JCVD, been meaning to. But I think Van Damme is a better actor than given credit for. He turned in solid performances in Nowhere To Run and Double Impact, I think.

He's also good in Universal Soldier. And who doesn't love him in Hard Target.

Timecop's my favorite Van Damme movie. I dig Hard Target and Universal Soldier too.

Van Damme is a boss. He gets a bad rap because he is an action star, but he has acting chops and always has. Sure, he has his crapshoots like Street Fighter but he also has some really great gems in his career. JCVD, like others have said, was great.

He's probably my second favourite 80's action hero next to Arnie.

Oh I agree, Nowhere to Run is on of my favorite Van Damme movies. I remember the whole marketing campaign back then was "JCVD, like you've never seen him before." The kids really did look to him as a protector and father figure.

I liked his performance in Lionheart. He was a believable ass kicking Legionnaire deserter. Favorite quote:

"I AM NOT HEER TO GIVE YOU PROBLEM, I'M TRYING TO ELP YOU!"

I like JCVD in Bloodsport
